Cubs have new ad campaign

here's the link:

They have a picture of Dome's. I really like them, and I think that they look pretty cool :)
They said that they plan to have them for Fukudome, Ramirez, Soriano and Wood, and possibly Zambrano, Lee and Theriot.

Oh, are the Cubs in trouble.
Am I the only one who noticed that the picture of Fukudome has a background that is very similar to the Japanese World War II imperial flag?

Sun-Times ad

Japanese imperial flag

There are going to be a lot of people upset with this, not the least of whom are a lot of Japanese fans. Methinks the Cubs had better pull this -- FAST.

Would like to hear from dragonsfanatic and any other Japanese fans here how they feel about this imagery.

The Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force...
...still uses that flag as their naval ensign, I believe. I don't know that anyone would take offense to that.

Hmmm.
I did not know that. Still, a lot of Americans might see that as the emblem of Imperial Japan from WWII. I know that was my first impression.

According to this, you're right about the emblem.

I'd still like to hear from dragonsfanatic about this.

The air station in Iwakuni...
...was (is, according to that link you posted) a joint Marine Corps/JMSDF facility. Lived there for a year...

...and would absolutely love to say that's why I remembered that, but really I found it on Wikipedia.

Re: Fukudome Ad
Personally, I wouldn't be strongly reminded any old military stuff when I see this ad. It's quite modern design. Anyway, it depends personality.
My feeling is that it wouldn't be necessary to being too much overhype on this comparison.

BTW, JSDF flag is currently this one.

Funny thing is that Asahi Shinbun, known as the most leftish newspaper nationwide, uses this company flag. "Asahi" means sunrise, and yes, their sunrise is clealy left-sided ;-)
Asahi Shinbun is the organizer and the major sponsor of summer high school tournament at Koshien, and their flag is always associated with red-hot high school baseball in Japan.

I stand corrected, then.
It just hit me the wrong way when I saw it. The Cubs could have made the same "edgy" point without the symbol, though.

Re: The Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force
Right, this one is still used as Maritime part of JSDF, and this one for Ground part of it.

I have grown so tired..
of the "this might offend the left-handed albino hermaphrodite herpetologist group so we better not do it" mindset. It's a flippin' baseball advertisement for cryin' out loud. Do we care if vegans are upset at the "got milk" campaign? Maybe we can protest Skittles too, they've high-jacked the Gay/Lesbian rainbow for their own profit.

Al, really, I don't think many Japanese-Americans or Japanese-Japanese will equate that cubs logo and the  red and white stripes as a slight/innuendo to Axis-Japan. The Nazi flag would be a different story altogether.

As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

Bigger versions
Anyone have bigger versions of those or seen the Soriano one? All I have found is the two with Fuku and Ramirez.
