Red Sox to wear corporate logo on sleeves

I'm sure there will be some extended debate about this one. Will this be the start of baseball players eventually looking like Nascar drivers? Will we soon see Cubs players with a Motorola batwing logo?

The Cubs did this...
I doubt this leads to anything further -- at least for now.

wow....
I doubt it'd ever get that far.
JMHO.
I don't mind.
Advertising is going to become a bigger part of the game for the Cubs, but will we ever see Derrek Lee sporting dozens of logos on his uni? I doubt it very much. But think about how much advertising is already there. Gatorade cups on the bench, Fifth-Third fifth innings, 7th Inning Stretches brought to you by an American Idol contestant.... It's a bit late for the purists to be drawing a line in the sand, IMO.
Do you honestly believe
I know they don't...
Ticket prices keep going up...
This is only
Yankees
What I remember is that MLB All-Star Japan tour in 1996, it was sponsored by Sun Microsystems and all star players put their logo on their helmet, but some of those helmets with logo were still used for spring training and exhibition games in next year. I think those guys just didn't throw away those helmets right away, but it should be a bit strange for US audiences even Sun is an American company.

Some Japanese teams......
It'd be like having the Chicago Tribune Cubs. Or, years ago, the Atlanta TBS Braves. In fact, Ted Turner wanted to put advertising on the BACK of one of his players' shirts. When the Braves signed Andy Messersmith, whose # was 17, the same as (then) WTCG's channel number, he wanted Messersmith to put "CHANNEL" on the back of his shirt. Messersmith said he would, but Bowie Kuhn nixed it.
Turner could have done it if he'd had Messersmith legally change his name to "Andy Channel". But maybe that would have been going too far.
ahh I can see it now

Lol
it only seems like yesterday
hey...
I think that if the advertisements were discreet, it would be ok. Of course, if the advertisements were discreet, the money wouldn't be as good.
Let's just not end up like Captain Amazing.

Looking back....
Some ballclubs like Yokohama and Hiroshima, stopped using their parent company name (Hiroshima sometimes called with their company name - Toyo Mazda - but mostly not), but in Yokohama's case, the parent company (Taiyo, a fishery company) thought it's unnecessary to use ballclub as their advertising pillar any more, and dismissed Taiyo from their name. And it was finally sold to TBS - Tokyo Broadcasting System, even still located in Yokohama, then obviously they couldn't rename it as Yokohama Tokyo Baystars - it's too confusing ;-)
Here is some good reading and watching of Japanese baseball history at mlb.com.

Dont Forget...

Kasey
There ain't no such thing
And please, don't try to convince me that the owners need to do this to compete. If none of the teams are allowed to use the uniforms as billboards, none of the teams will have an unfair advantage and they'll all have to operate within a lesser budget.
Yeah, but we could charge a lot more...
You're absolutely correct
Every other major sport tries to promote a level playing field with some sort of cap. Baseball does not. This would merely further the imbalance in the the leagues.
