How about Jake Peavy?
This morning it was announced on ESPN radio that San Diego was interested in moving Jake Peavy. The Fathers are looking to rebuild quickly and feel that moving the superstar pitcher could bring a couple of good major league players and a couple of top prospects.
Wouldn't he look good in blue next year? Imagine the current Cub rotation in some combination along with Peavy. The possibilities could be great. I don't know if the Cubs have the stones or the players to do a deal but it's worth discussing. What do you think?

They will want WAY too much for him...
and he will most likely want to rework his current contract with whowever wants him…and by “rework” I mean add 2 years and 22 million more dollars to it.
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

Exactly.
Let’s wait till November before we start “fixing” things.

If we're going to '"fix" stuff...
can it at least be stuff that’s broken? Like the SS position.

You're determined to get rid of scrappy-do aren't you? Can't you see we're stuck
with him. Just like poop on your shoe.

Lighten up francis. It's just a diversion from the obvious.

Well, he's definitely an elite pitcher.
Considering how poor their offense is, I would guess the Padres would want a slugger or three for him, though. And I’m not sure who the Cubs could offer (aside from perhaps Hoffpauir). I’m guessing the Yankees make a hard run at him.

Yeah, but who do they give up? The report said
that they wanted a couple of top players and a couple of prospects. The Yankee cupboard is kind of bare.

I'm guessing the Yanks...
will go after C.C. and just spend money rather than sacrifice tradeable players.

They are forced to go the free agent route, they don't have the pieces to make a deal. Too many
old guys with fat contracts.

I think we need to know about
Dempster and the contract
Wood and the contract
Z and his health
I see Guzman, Samardzija and Hill vying for a spot and depending on the above whether the Cubs trade from strength the perennial 12-9 5th starter in Marquis.

I doubt that Guzman will go back to starting with his injury history. I think
he’s a bullpen guy now.

Agreed.
I could see the Shark getting a shot at the rotation and, yeah, I suppose Rich Hill is a possibilty.

Peavy
I think it’s going to cost a lot to nab Peavy. My guess is that we resign Dempster and figure out the 5th starter job. Could we put together a package to compete for Peavy? Perhaps, although Shark would probably have to be in the mix as they’d want a top arm in return. Dempster is arguably the 2nd or 3rd most valuable SP FA, and if he’s willing to return, I think we go that route and find an internal option for the 5th job.
Btw, on the Yankees – Their cupboard isn’t exactly bare. It’s heavy in young talent, little developed prospects, along with the graduated pitchers of recent years. If they are willing to put Phillip Hughes into a deal, I think that should still draw enough interest. Jesus Montero profiles as a big time slugger who will likely move to first, but the Padres have Kyle Blanks and Adrian Gonzalez. Austin Jackson is one piece that could interest the Yankees positionally, along with their catching options (Cervelli, Romine). There’s some good arms. I’m a big fan of Zach McAllister, and they have other pieces, like Horne, Heredia, and more.

The Astros let Doug Brocail go
there’s a decent middle reliver WAAY cheaper than a starter like Jake Peavy….I’d sign him for next to nothing. No more large contracts to guys like Eyre/Howry. Middle relief — you have to either develop or look for bargains. Brocail would be a bargain.
