Official HATE thread...
This is for every Cubs fan that wants to vent, without worry for the pollyanna post police that infect every thread.
This is the place for you to call Dempster a gutless punk. This is the place for you to gripe about Soriano swinging at anything in the same zip code. This is the place for you to wonder exactly what Lou did to make these guys tighten up.
This is the place for you to think Marshall and SU*$^Q!%)(!#%djza are overrated goobers who couldn't keep a 4-2 game close. And what a wondrous decision THAT was, putting those guys in key situations in the playoffs.
This team let us down tonight. I know they tried. They didn't mean it.
That don't feed the bulldog. Figure it out, boys. DO NOT embarrass the city and the fans again this year with an NLDS sweep.
And I hope the fans boo their m-fing lungs out.
Tired of the pollyannas telling you that you're too negative? Come on in here. Vent, hate, rage, whine, bitch, whatever.
You deserve it.

You know who I hate?
Dempster.
Earlier this week, Colin Cowherd, that gasbag on ESPN, predicted that the Dodgers would take Game 1 because Dempster would choke.
I f***ing hate Dempster for proving Cowherd right.
Dempster wasn’t ready for prime time tonight. His 14 wins might as well be nothing now. He screwed up when it mattered. Let the Yankees take a chance on him in the off-season and watch him screw up for them.

we let our team down tonight
one of the worst displays i’ve seen from a hometown crowd. common, we’re the nl central champs…our fans should be excited to see the cubs at home in the playoffs. even before it looked bad there was no energy aside from dero’s homerun. no chants. nothing. we’d better be pumped tomorrow night.
and i hate tbs and their crew.

The crowd was completely out of the game. I do not know if it had to do with the odd start time or the performance, but it was embarressing.

When did THE FANS start getting multi-million contracts to do their job?
Dempster sucked the life right out of the stadium. Blame him.
We have the right to expect effort. I saw it from DeRosa’s bat, Dome’s fielding and Fontenot’s pinch-hitting. I didn’t see it anywhere else.

I was fine with bringing in the AAA squad after the lead was blown.
It was one of those nights that you could feel. Lowe on the mound, offense in the early innings and nothing more. Squandered leadoff double when they were down 4-2.
I agreed with that ONE decision of Lou’s, saving Woody and/or Marmol. Dempster staying in after walking ther bags loaded is one of the biggest gafs I have seen in a while. Demp was walking around the mound BEGGING to be taken out. He was off and he gave Lou every chance to take him out pre-grand slam but Lou did as he does. That was my problem. Game was lost after that.

Lou said he didn't remove Dempster after he loaded the bases with his 7th walk because...
Dempster hadn’t allowed a run yet. Was that sound reasoning? What do you all think?
by Fraggin Judge on Oct 2, 2008 8:29 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think a good manager (which Lou usually is)
reads Demp’s body language. When you have a pitcher who barely got out of a bases loaded jam earlier, who just walked the bases loaded after 2 were out and he had 0-2 count, pacing around the mound, you take him out. demp is one of the most mild mannered and cool guys on this team. he would have been bummed he couldn’t get past 5 but happy if the Cubs had a W.
just my opinion.

last year all over again
what… Soriano, Lee, Ramirez and Soto go 2-for-15. I said this before… one of these guys needs to put the team on their shoulder. This cannot be the offensive output we saw last year against the Diamondbacks and from what I saw tonight, its gonna be.

With that said, its only one game. If they play like shit the whole series and lose, than go ahead and cut loose with how the good players didn’t deliver.

its not just today...
… its a continuation of the offense we saw last year in the playoffs. Hope to get someone on base and then hit a HR. Aramis hits a lead off double … you MUST get him in somehow. But this has been the teams downfall all season. Its not just one game, its what we saw last year in the playoffs and far too frequently this year.
Dempster pitched poorly today… and unfortunately the walks are part of Dempster. But this team also needs to score more than two runs. It was lost on the mound, yes, but even if Demp pitches a decent game, maybe giving up two or three runs over seven innings, the team still probably loses.
by dmlichte on Oct 1, 2008 9:15 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't know how long...
…you have followed baseball, but if you are banking on the offense being at the top of their game every night, you will be dissappointed. In the playoffs, you face good ptichers and you are going to get shut down more times than not.
This is a game they could have won 2-0 or 2-1, if Dempster would have had any kind of command, it could have turned out that way.

I'm not a 5-year old
Don’t treat treat me like I am.
Yes, I know that teams don’t often score a lot of runs in playoff games. But this is a team that has a pattern that I am going to go back to last year with. I am not banking on them being on top of their game offensively every night but I am banking on them being on the top of their game offensively on some nights and now we’ve seen four straight playoff games over two years where the Cubs offensively have been crap.
Its not just the two runs scored. The Cubs actually collected hits tonight… but they left guys stranded. Soriano was again the flailing swinger who is now 2-for-19 as a Cub in playoff games. They were swinging for the fences against a pretty extreme ground ball pitcher on a cold night. Yes, balls were leaving the yard but you cannot bank on the HR.
Yes, I do blame Dempster but the offense continues to disturb me.
by dmlichte on Oct 1, 2008 9:29 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
All I'm saying is...
…you need to win some low scoring games in the playoffs and tonight was one that could have been a low scoring win if Dempster had any type of command.
I apologize for the condensending tone in my earlier post.

no prob...
… we’re all, um, frustrated. I just feel like this is 2007 all over again and 26 hours from now we’re going to be down 2-0 again.
Dempster showed his main weakness today and yes, had he done his job, he should have gotten this game into the 7th. But if the offense continues to be absent in the post season, its time for Hendry to go back to the drawing board and realize that a good fantasy league offense doesn’t win playoff series.

agreed
if you are a good team there is NO excuse for not executing and bringing home a runner at second with no outs. Soto watched two hittable strikes up and out over the outer half of the plate that he could have easily shot to the right side to move over Ramirez. Instead he watches them go by and swings at that unhittable sinker low and out of the zone. Absolutely ridiculous.

Lowe seemed to handle...
…the strikezone pretty well and that is just a BS excuse.
When a pitcher over throws his fastball, it usually ends up high and that is what Dempster was doing. Its almost like he had a little of Zambrano in him tonight and couldn’t keep himself on an even keel.
Tomorrow, I do expect a good game from Z.

I agree on the K zone.
There were a few pitches that appeared to go the wrong way. Called em high, and never called em at the knees as far as I could see of course. Still, Lou killed this game. Blame Demp all you want, Lou needed to yank him after walking the bags loaded. How can you NOT be pointing this out?
When you pitcher is stuggling, especially in this atmosphere, you yank him. Had he done that, Marshal, assuming he did what he did post GS and double, gets out of the inning.
My biggest fear is that somewhere inside Lou, he simply wanted Demp to get the win.

No I don't
Because this team has given me great memories already this year.
I got to go with my father to Wrigley for first time in 15 years. I got to take my little cousin to see Rich Harden pitch. I saw Mets fall to them at Shea in the 10th inning. I sat at my computer and saw them come back from a 9-0 deficit.
The Dodgers got the best of the Cubs tonight. Dempster wasn’t great and I wasn’t a fan of the #2 and #8 lineup. But the team for the most part tried. I don’t like Soriano at the plate in post season but he ran in the field tonight like it mattered.
Just watch tomorrow, hopefully there will be a better result.

Yes it is debatable,
but we’ve seen Demp walk guys into scoring position all year long. The greatest reason for his success this year has been inning management. And those calling for Marmol? Seriously? In a 2-0 ballgame in the 5th inning? Yea, NO ONE would of complained about that move in the later innings…

This post is embarrassing.
Yes, the Cubs played like crap tonight, and were managed poorly. But there’s no need for “hate” here.
I’ll have more to say in the morning. In the meantime, I suggest everyone take a deep breath and go to sleep, shake it off like the players have to, and wake up refreshed tomorrow.

Nothing any fan can do
Is more embarrassing than Dempster and Soriano’s performances.
The time for deep breaths are over. Zambrano has to deal tomorrow or it’s over. And no one should have any confidence in him.

IF the Cubs win 3 straight...
… won’t this thread look ridiculous?
Game one is important in a 5 game series, but a loss is not the end. I know that’s a statement of the obvious, but I still expect the Cubs to win this series.
Losing game 2 would be cause for serious concern, but even then “hate?” Way too over the top.

Thats my prediction...
…Cubs win 3 straight.

One thing I learned from last year
I’m not going to lose sleep over this and I’m not going to be acting pissed off all day around co-workers. If this is going to happen, it’s going to happen.
At most if we lose it this year in a poor performance I’ll have to seriously look at the amount of of money I’m going to invest on the team next year.

I really don't understand...
… the sentiment that people can’t be critical and also be fans. Is the “hate” extreme, absolutely. But being critical and calling out what went wrong in this game does not make someone less of a fan. Fans are allowed to avoid the critical and, yes, analytical aspect of things, but don’t fault those who who want to.

You’re faulting my right to have an opinion and express it. At the moment, I am not very optimistic. I’m not jumping and I’m not saying the Cubs won’t come back. But at the moment, I am pessimistic. You’re seeming to say that makes me less of a fan.
Faulting my opinion means telling me why I’m wrong. What you’re doing is nullifying my right to have that opinion.

I agree that "hate"is too strong a word. It's uncalled for.
But, Al, there is a lot to complain about and the future doesn’t look good the way this team is playing. They’re flatter than a pancake right now and were mostly the same the last month of the season. That’s no good at this moment.

Soriano has always been pathetic, to expect anythign out of him in the playoffs would be foolish

Yeah – pathetic. Like Game 7 of the 2001 World Series, when he homered off Schilling in the 8th inning to give the Yankees the lead, which would have been the Series-winning home run had Rivera not messed the bed in the 9th?

Just pathetic on the part of any fan on this thread who bashes the team…I’m disappointed in everyone who is giving up right now.
Look, they lost, losses HAPPEN!!! we had 64 OF THEM this YEAR!!!
this is 1 GAME!!! sure..it’s bigger than those 162 by exorbitant numbers…but there’s one tomorrow to get that bad taste out of our mouths…
I sat in a St. Louis bar tonight and got hated on all night…and you don’t see me giving up on this team…just pathetic in every facet to give up on your team DaBard…some fan you are.

… was a ridiculous way to title this thread. And Debard is going over the edge. However there are some real causes for continued concern and there’s nothing wrong with people venting. Tomorrow doesn't look better.
I hope we win. But we’ll feature a very inconsistent pitcher, our middle relievers are being hit, our corner outfielders are not hitting, we are starnding a lot of runners and our team was cold the whole month of September.
The Dodgers were the hot team in the final weeks of the season. Lou couldn’t get these players to play relaxed and with confidence. They were tense and anxious. Can we wake up in 24 hours? That’s unlikely though certainly not impossible. This team looked tonight like losers that will be eliminated earlier than everybody thought, their talent notwithstanding.

At least he identified what the thread was all about in the title. For the people who want to be optimistic and look on the bright side, that;s great. So why are you on this thread then? Maybe because you’re angry too and you need to take it out on anyone but the Cubs.

Nothing is over yet
The team is going to have to show that they can dig out of this. We all know how important winning the first game is in the first round.
You want the team to raise confidence from whatever it was. Instead Dempster booked his worst performance since he became a starter. It looks like Mark DeRosa, Theriot and the Dodgers came to play. Did I leave anybody out? I hated the lineup. Bench Fukudome for the rest of the series. Joe Torre is pure class. I’m still stewing about the last week of the season. Play to win and we might be playing the Mets.
Don’t want to have to vent agains tomorrow.

It's not over...
But the odds are brutal to get the series now. The team hasn’t been at it’s best for a month…and I felt Game 1 was key. Hopefully we see good Z turn it around. I can’t stomach a repeat of last October.
And I don’t care if this team wins 162…it no longer matters once the playoffs start. This team is too good for a “we’re happy to be here attitude”.
Set that fire under their asses Lou…and find a way to Fontenot in the lineup.

Theres no one to blame but ourselves
The Dodgers jumped and capitalized on our mistakes, as would any team playing any other team in the league.
We tried our best, and unfortunately it didn’t end up in the result that we wanted, all we can do is just move on.
Lots of people are just acting like they lost Game 7 of the WS. They don’t call it a five game series for no reason. Always look on the bright side of life.

not to mention

- Lou giving Demp the benefit of the doubt on that LAST DARN AT BAT – which any of us could do.
- Ignoring danger signs of Dempster handing out WALKS should have been read a LOT quicker

And the fan energy was .. well, inexplicable. However, a little bit of passion might have helped .. then again, they paid millions of bucks to sit and watch. It was time for the Cubs to do their thing. They didn’t.

I wrote the other night that managerial moves are magnified in the postseason.
Leaving Dempster out there looks now like the wrong move. Lou trusted he’d get the last strike but the guy had emptied his tank. The manager should have recognized that.
by Fraggin Judge on Oct 1, 2008 11:58 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
My thought at that time was that he was
Managing the 5th inning but thinking about the 8th Inning. I think he desperately wanted Demp to pitch at least 6 innings so as not to expose the middle relief of the bullpen. He could have played matchups in the 7th and had Marmol at the ready for the last out or two and for the 8th.
Demp should have been pulled when Manny was walked. Bringing in Marshall to pitch to Either would have been the right call.

I hate bedwetting Cubs fans
who are ready to jump off the ledge after ONE loss in the postseason, like many on this board and many who were calling/e-mailing into the postgame shows tonight on WGN and the Score. You people are pathetic.
Did the Cubs play well tonight? No. But it’s a best-of-5 series, not a best-of-1.
I was predicting Cubs in 5 before this series began. They’re still on track to do exactly that.

Takae it down? I thought this was an opinion forum. We don't have to agree all the time or see things only one way.
I personally prefer the analysis over the rooting every time, even when the analysis doesn’t favor the Cubs.
I insist I see disconcerting and troublesome things in this club that were not there before September. We all hope the team will turn this around but there is not any objective fact out there to justify that hope right now. We’ll see if there is one tonight.
