the official non-Official HATE thread
Sorry ledge jumpers, you are not welcomed here. Tonight was a terrible game for our Cubs, but what is bitching and moaning going to do? Nothing. Dempster was the right call to pitch game one and even though hindsight is 20/20, I don't fault Lou or anyone else for the decision.
I can't wait for the voice of reason (Al) to come here and put into perspective tonights game.
words words words words freakin words. I'm frustated too, but I can't stand people getting on here complaining the whole night.

Dodgers got it out of their system. Now their bats can go cold and we can try to avoid Manny.
It was in many ways a blow-out but imagine this. Had Dempster not given up the grandslam we still could have lost 3-2. That would have hurt even more. I know we’d have different people pitching but you get the point.

Look
Heres the deal, was it disappointing? Of course! But the team that we saw out there was not the same that we have seen all season. Post-season jitters whatever. You have to show a little faith in what they can do, think about it, all the guys that we have seen produce aside from De-Ro just didn’t have it tonight. I have to base my thoughts on the next games on the past performances, and if thats an indication, then the team with the best record in the NL is poised to put a hurt on the Dodgers heading on out. I still like our rotation past now that we are past Lowe…we have the advantage in that department.

Well I’ve read both the hate thread and the non hate thread and I think both miss the point. It isn’t about believing or ledge jumping, it is about the better team going out there and getting the job done no matter what. We had one for the taking and we let it go. I don’t want to hear about the fans, the umpire, managerial mover, the bullpen or anything. Go out there and beat the weaker team. Plain and simple. I actually think the crowd response was appropriate. You guys play like you are capable and we’ll support it, play the way you did tonight and you’ll hear crickets.

Not knocking the frustation, but....
this team almost won 100 games. I don’t think who hits where in the lineup is the issue. I think it is key guys not stepping up when it really counts is the issue. The results are lacking to say the least....
but how do you manage around Sori’s performance, Dempsters performance, D Lee’s performance (at times)? i just feel big time guys NEED to step up big time. Did Manny have jitters? Did Derek Lowe fall apart after DeRosa’s bomb?
"Bring On The Major Leagues" Stephen Malkmus
by graceunderpressure on Oct 1, 2008 10:01 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well....
I had no problems with D Lee tonight. He played good defense and did get a hit and a walk.
Soriano I have not been a fan of since day 1 so his performance just gets mad upset. However having him in the #1 spot does the least amount of damage I think. He’s pretty much the A-Rod of the Cubs for post season.
And as for Dempster, he had control problems BUT the team wasn’t chasing him either. Usually they do. Perhaps they studied the tape and they were really really patient.
And as for Manny, he didn’t do too much with people on base. He hit a solo HR.

D Lee wasn’t awful, his 8th inning (it think) at bat was awful, but he did ok. I just think Manny has that Puljols presence, he impacts the game two to three batters before he is up to hit
"Bring On The Major Leagues" Stephen Malkmus
by graceunderpressure on Oct 1, 2008 10:10 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Absolutely
In regards to Manny I was already thinking ahead with Dempster. I was telling people we need to get the third out before Manny is up. Yet each time that didn’t happen he really didn’t do too much.
He GIDP and had that single which Theriot saved from a possible run scoring.
I just think this year I’m not going to put myself through the pain I did in 2007. Mentally I don’t think anyone should do that to themselves.

Based on the number of DP’s he hit into this year it could almost be anticpated he would hit into one or two today as long as he had men on in front of him. Probably a different story tomorrow…

Our pitching depth is our strength. They can’t match Z, Harden, and Lilly from their 2,3,4. That’s been our strength all year, it is now. We fire our best bullets starting tomorrow. If Z and Harden aren’t up to it, well, then we weren’t going to win the World Series anyway.

Also, yes the it did seem a subdued atmosphere tonight, which shouldn’t be, but I don’t think the 5:30 start helped. Tomorrow night, with a start three hours later leaving that much more time for people to get oiled up before should lead to a much more intimidating environment.

Did the fans lose the game?
Hell no. But did they help? Not so much. That’s the problem with this stupid drought. If the Cubs fall behind, most fans immediately get nervous and tight and reluctantly cheer somberly until the Cubs take back the lead. And then there’s the collection of fans who are jackasses (dabard, anyone?) who just want to boo and bitch and moan.
Do you really think the crowd is that passive if we fall behind 2 in mid-august? No, because we’ve learned that this team keeps fighting. So why are we more likely to give up on a game early because it is the postseason?
No, the fans didn’t lose the game and they never will. But it did kinda suck to hear boos and see the passion drained by the sixth inning.

Tonight was about Dempster not handling the circumstances (pressure) very well. How else to you explain 7 walks in 5 innings?
For what its worth (and it probably ain’t much), I think this game is going to knock the Cubs back on track and they will win this series in 4 games. I also think Dempster will have a much better performance his next start.

This isn’t football or hockey where there is a distinct advantage to being “jacked up” and having that emotional high give you a little more energy. In baseball, where there is a fine line between success and failure (because of the fine level of skill required), sometimes you can get too “jacked up” for your own good. The best players (clutch performers) are the ones who are able to stay composed during stressful times and focus on the task at hand.
With all this said, the home field advantage in baseball (especially during the playoffs), is probably the least important in all major league sports. If given a choice, I would certainly rather play at home, but if players are relying on the fans to improve their performance, that team has problems.

Fans reaction is a trend
I was in NY this past week. They boo’d the hell out of the Mets but then cheered them wildly when they got runs. It was very similar to the Cubs fans at the game. While everyone should be allowed to voice their opinions I personally just don’t like booing. I’m one of those people who thinks you shouldn’t teach your kids to boo.
But saying that, everyone at the game paid for their tickets and have every right to voice how they feel about the team.

Its tough
when you walk the ballpark ( Lowe and Furcal twice!) it zaps the energy. “Z” needs a good start, get us to the 8th with the lead.
And, our leadoff hitter needs a couple knocks.
Get them tomorrow, get that win

I'm going to bed!
I’ve acted and felt like a fool enough for one day. I also will admit to being glad that the Office is on tomorrow night. I need to laugh and ease into the game. I think we were all set up to be knocked down today. Let the Cubbies show us this is different tomorrow.

Change the name, it doesn't make sense.
By saying this is the official non-official hate thread, you’re saying this thread is the authoritative thread that isn’t authoritate for hate. In other words, this is a hate thread.
But if this is suppose to be the …. non-hate thread, I’m calling SHENANIGANS!!!

hugged my golden retriever, had some ice cream and calmed down a bit.
Yes it suck. (And God did this game hurt), but everyone needs to take a deep breath. Lou keeps telling us “Its not gonna be easy”… and now we see what he meant.
That being said, if we can’t win tomorrow, my head may explode.

Was Wrigley as weird sounding in person as it was on TV?
It sounded like the air was out of it before the first inning was over… It was like funeral Wrigley.

over the asskicking we got tonight.
Theres something stablizing about the idea of “one hit and we’re in this” instead of the awfulness we saw tonight.

There really is nothing here that we don’t already know. The content of the fanpost is fine but there really is no value to the fanpost than to counter DeBard’s Bizarro comments in his own fanpost. It is like Rec’ing a game thread or something….

Die hard
I have lived and died with the Cubs for 21 of my 26 years. I’ve dreamed of us in the series since I was 7 and Clark and the Giants broke my heart. I finally started to believe in game 6 in 2003 and look at what happened. I really want this team to win. I’m sick of everybody calling us losers.

No one is seriously faulting the choice of starting Dempster tonight--BUT...
we are all faulting Dempster’s impersonation of a MLB pitcher tonight—it lacked something…maybe it was all of those BBs on a night when the wind was blowing in somewhat? A good night to challenge hitters and he looked afraid/incapable of throwing strikes.
