Pathetic and Gutless

Dempster was pathetic.  Sitting watching Lester mow down the Halos, Dempster is no Lester.  And he can forget about ever being in Beckett's league.

Soriano was pathetic.  Show up or sit down.

DPLee as usual.  Where is the guy that beat us and won the WS in 2003?

The crowd - beyond pathetic.  No f#$%ing excuse. Not the ticket prices, not nervousness.  I was embarrassed to be a Cubs fan during that game.

I'm a lifelong (37 year) die-hard fan.  And I've maintained to all of the encouraging comments people have made during the year, that this team lacks the killer instinct.  They are not a championship team.  They can't relax, they don't have fun even winning, not like the Rays, Red Sox, and Angels. You can call it tempering my expectations, planning for the worst so as not to be let down.

But they proved me right tonight.

Will they step up, or fade into the same first-round loss obivion as last years team?

"No guts, no glory."

How the hell

does anyone on this website sitting in the comfort of their home clacking away at their keyboards, have the balls to call Ryan Dempster “gutless?”

F**k all of you.

That is all.

A very "enlightening" commentary.

Too bad for you that the author is not into blue Koolaide. next time, refute his arguments instead of insulting him, please. He’s as entitled to his opinion as everyone else.

by Fraggin Judge on Oct 1, 2008 11:31 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I'm into "blue koolaide" as my name suggests

but i can also relate to the author’s anger and frustration after a game like this. Just because we’re Cub fans doesn’t mean we have to support the team blindly and the way they performed tonight was disgusting on pretty much every level.

by bluekoolaide on Oct 1, 2008 11:42 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

umm...

… what argument?

Calling a guy gutless is not an argument.

by big_lowitzki on Oct 2, 2008 8:25 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I said Dempster was pathetic, I should have clarified

Dempster had a bad day but 7 walks in 4 2/3 in the NLDS is pathetic.

But I see Ortiz grimacing after a popup, and throwing his helmet in the dugout.

Was “gutless” too harsh? Perhaps. I hope they prove me wrong.

Im sorry

Maybe a few more Lets Go Cubbies chants from the upper deck would’ve kept some of those homers in.

Nothing to cheer about tonight, plain and simple.

I'm simply saying

that there is no reason to attack the character of the man.

Everyone who knows anything about Demp knows he’s a stand-up guy who does a great deal for the community. To call him gutless is unwarranted and unnecessary.

We all know he didn’t pitch well tonight. Let’s leave it at that.

You're no "fan"...

They lost a game. Big deal. There’s another one tomorrow. You never had a bad day at the office? Demp had a bad night. Doesn’t make him gutless. This post? Now that’s gutless. I bet you’re the type of guy who when Soriano homers, you’ll be the first one cheering.

And made a mistake pitch. If Dusty had made a change maybe the CUBS would’ve beat the Yankees in that Series…

Sorry, but it is a very good fanpost even if I don't agree with evrything it says.

Tonight’s game proved that the key to win in the playoffs is not which was the better team in the regular season but who finished stronger in September. The fact is the Cubs were cold the last month while the Dodgers were hot.

Right now things don’t look good for the Cubs. Tomorrow’s pitcher has been both horrible and brilliant the last month. His inconsistency is a bad omen. The corner outfielders are not hitting and the middle relievers are allowing too many runs. Meanwhile, too many runners are consistently stranded. That was September for the Cubs and nothing changed tonight. Dempster’s unexpected worst game of the season just added more misery to that situation.

Tomorrow is do or die for this team. That doesn’t help the team to relax. The fact that the manager couldn’t get this group of players to relax and play with confidence tonight is a very bad sign. This team could go out earlier than we thought.

Yeah, uhh, I was there tonight.

And when DeRosa hit the HR, we were up. When we were given a reason to cheer, we did. Should we have been up screaming when Loney hit that HR? Crawl back to whatever hole you’ve been in the whole season, and take the rest of these bandwagon jumpers with you. Plenty of us have been around for the whole time, and don’t need idiots like you telling we aren’t good enough fans. F- off.

by sackings108 on Oct 2, 2008 12:15 AM CDT   0 recs

uhh I was there too..

And it sounded just like it did at other games I’ve been at, notably:

a) 2003 game 6, before the bartman play
b) last year game 3, right after the lead off home run.

Dead silent.

So you go and sit and only make noise when there’s a home run? Exactly the problem. Watch the Angels/Red Sox game, and you’ll know what I’m talking about. They were loud, cheering the whole time.

And we weren’t (well I was trying).

by CalDeano on Oct 2, 2008 1:33 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Difference in the Angels/Red Sox game

It was a close game till the late innings, scoreless till the middle of the game.

Once Loney hit the grand slam, that sucked all the life out of the crowd.

Grandmothers...

As far as I’m concerned, you’re accusing the white-haired lady seated next to me, proudly wearing her “1990 All-Star Game” souvenir sweatshirt, of not screaming enough. Really?

We can’t all be thuggish fanboys. Put the immediate blame on the team and remember that they can still get ’em tomorrow night.

I'm frustrated but the point I should have made is...

There is an attitude, a feeling that championship teams have. They play relaxed, they have fun, but they also show the right kinds of emotion at the right times.

And despite the flaming I maintain this group does not have what it takes.

by CalDeano on Oct 2, 2008 1:37 AM CDT   0 recs

Well I guess you don't have to watch the rest of the series then right?

You post is odd. You attacked Dempster who had a horrible game and would be the first to say so, you attack every other Cub player (not excluding the one guy who really showed up: DeRo), and thn you attacked those of us at the game (excluding of course yourself).

I figured you were joking but it appears you are serious. Sorry for ya.

Umm....great pitching will take care of

momentum, and will stop a team and shut up a crowd — and that’s what happened tonight. Lowe….owns the Cubs. Always has.

The Angels, as other teams IN EVERY SPORT do — they inject artificial intensity into their crowd. The video board says clap — they clap. The board says ‘make noise,’ they make noise. Just like little robots. (Or, perhaps we need a HD/Super Magnificent Video Board with a freakin’ monkey jumping around?)

Perhaps that’s what we need….that’s what’s missing.

And how the hell do you know what the ‘team emotion ’ of the Cubs is?
I almost wasn’t going to check the site tonight, because it was going be loaded with this crap.

Sorry I stopped by. There’s too much of this shit here.

Well said...

…it amazes me how so many Cub fans will start cranking up the excuses after one loss during a 97 win season: the umpire had a tight strikezone, the crowd was too quiet, the hitters sucked, Piniella should have pulled Dempster, Soriano blows, etc. etc.

The game was lost because Dempster pitched a very very bad game. He actually had good stuff, but that doesn’t get it done if you can’t get it over the plate. This may have been the biggest game he has started in his career (by a mile) and it certainly looked like he had a hard time with that the first go around (no other way to explain a major league pitcher walking 7 in 5 innings).

I think Dempster is going to be starting several more post-season games this year, and will rise up to the challenge after this humbling experience.

Exactly

“I think Dempster is going to be starting several more post-season games this year, and will rise up to the challenge after this humbling experience.”

Amen bro. This series is far from over. If anybody wants to give up on the Cubbies now, have them walk the plank.

The Cubs will be back.

Anyone who blames this loss on the fans is a moron.

How in the world you can call a man "Gutless"

You want to get on his performance fine, but to attack a man heart that you have no idea what is going on inside of him is well “gutless”. Check yourself first.
Dempster will make no excuses, he won’t blame the fans, the ump, he will look at himself for the Cubs loss.
This is a good ballclub, they want to win MORE than you do.
Lets get a win today.

Cubs Quitter

It’s OK to point out where the Cubs failed, and its more than all right to feel down after last nights game, but if you are going to be all out calling the players who helped get us here pathetic… or anything of the sort, well… Just go elsewhere. This is the time us Cubs fans unite… not divide. Even if the Cubs lose, which they won’t, this is the time to back our team like never before. I would rather be remembered as a legitimate Cubs fan, who loves his team and gets his heart ripped out time and time again than a two-headed horse which roots for the Cubs when they win, and walks out on then while they are losing.

The Cubs are deciding their desiny, and you are too. I’ve chosen mine and today is a new day… a new team… and once again, I’m singing “Go Cubs Go!”

by TheHawkRules on Oct 2, 2008 7:54 AM CDT   0 recs

This has to be the worst post

This is the worst ever and I have made some really bad ones myself,

Attacking a players performance is one thing.. Calling him gutless is another

And calling out fans who act like adults and not drunken morons is even worse.

Because the players don’t kill themselves after the game people say it means they have no heart and no emotion. Then the next day Carlos Zambrano shows emotion and he’s called immature.

Actually you’re right. The Cubs purposely lost this game. They don’t want to win the world series. Not even this series. They all have plans to go home by the 7th.

Thngs of worth are worth fighting for regardless of the odds.

by cubstoseriesby100 on Oct 2, 2008 8:14 AM CDT   0 recs

anxious for Demp to pitch again

What I know from watching and reading about him, I assume Demp is VERY anxious to have another shot to help this team win a game.

I look forward to his next start

by JCD on Oct 2, 2008 9:35 AM CDT   0 recs

Let it out, dude.

Let it all out. There. Feel better?

Sure, calling Dempster “gutless” is ridiculous. I guess, from a performance standpoint, one could call him “pathetic.” Walking seven batters in a playoff game is certainly something, and “pathetic” is as good a word as any.

But I think you’re a little premature about saying this team lacks the required “killer” mentality. It was one game – one game that went horribly wrong and got far, far away from them. But it was still one game. Whether they are or aren’t a championship team is yet to be determined. Do the Angels lack the killer instinct because they let Lester dominate them? Is John Lackey gutless?

I think the series really comes down to tonight’s contest. If the Cubs win, I think they could take one of the games in LA and then bring it home in Game 5. If they lose, well, I may hold on to some shred of hope, but I’ll be asking for a blindfold and cigarette nonetheless.

The Chicago Cubs: 2008 Central Division Champions

by dat cubfan daver on Oct 2, 2008 10:08 AM CDT   0 recs

Thanks at least..

for a rational response.

Lackey didn’t walk 7 batters in 4 2/3 innings so i wouldn’t call his performance pathetic. And I did clarify above that in my frustration I implied I was calling Dempster gutless which I was not.

I’m actually suprirsed though at the “outrage” of my use of the word ‘gutless’ which is most commonly defined as: lacking courage or vitality

I don’t think anyone who watched that game could argue that the Cubs lacked “vitality”. And most people seem to agree that the players and the crowd seemed very nervous, worried, waiting for somethign to go wrong. Is that lacking courage? Maybe not but it’s not that big a stretch.

I hope this is all moot after tonight. And I have no intention of getting a refund for my tickets in L.A Sunday night, nor do I intend to watch them be eliminated in person in Chavez Ravine.
