2008 Playoffs or Expecting The Worst Sucks

Everything about the playoff performance of the 2008 Chicago Cubs was a complete disaster.  But for me, the most disappointing aspect was just how quickly I gave up on the team's chances of winning.   Despite all of the comebacks the Cubs had made during the season, I knew that Game 1 was over as soon as James Loney hit a grand slam (actually, I knew something bad was about to happen when Dempster walked the bases loaded and was left in the game), Game 2 was over after DeRosa and Lee made those key errors, and Game 3 was over...um...as soon as the Dodgers took the lead, and I just don't feel like looking up how they did that.  I've always hated when people write about how Cub fans expect the worst.  That has never been my attitude in the past - even in 2007, I fully expected the Cubs to come back from two games down against the Diamondbacks.  The 2008 Cubs were clearly superior to the 2007 team, but in spite of all of those "It's Gonna Happen" signs, I suddenly lost hope once the calendar switched to October.

I guess I subconsciously gave up on the Cubs during the last Friday of the regular season; Geovany Soto had returned from a hand injury, but left the game after he reaggravated it.  Mark DeRosa also missed most of the final week with a leg injury, and Carlos Zambrano was clearly not at full strength after coming off the disabled list.  One third of the expected starting lineup for Game 1 would be banged up, and that seemed like a bad way to be heading into the playoffs.

And I really worried when Ryan Dempster was named the starting pitcher of Game 1; in my opinion, the only two choices to start the first game should have been Zambrano (to send the message that the team still believed in him) or Rich Harden, who always has the potential to throw better than any other pitcher on the team.  Even though Dempster had put up good stats all season, his ceiling for greatness was lower than Harden, Big Z and even Ted Lilly.  I worried that Dempster would suddenly pitch as bad as most people expected he would - and he walked 7 batters in Game 1.  I worried Zambrano would pitch like he had for most of September - and he left the game down 6-0 (although he actually pitched pretty well, too bad every Chicago Cubs infielder committed an error).  And I worried that Rich Harden wouldn't even be able to pitch six full innings and the Cubs bullpen would blow Game 3 - Harden didn't even pitch FIVE innings, and though the bullpen pitched well afterwards, the Cubs couldn't overcome the 3-0 deficit.  And I thought all of these things before the playoffs even began, so I don't think Loney's Grand Slam was what caused me to give up on the season.

Maybe it was the competition.  As I said, the 2008 Cubs were much better than the 2007 team, but I fully expected the 2007 team to win the pennant.  I think the NL just got better this year - the worst 2008 NL Playoff Team could have beaten the best 2007 NL Playoff Team.  Anyways, my prediction for the World Series was Boston over Philadelphia, unless Josh Beckett couldn't pitch, in which case I was going with Philly over the Angels.  I didn't really talk much about this prediction since I felt guilty about not picking the Cubs, but it's looking like a pretty good pick right now.  I wish I had been wrong.

2008 is NOT the worst playoff loss the Cubs have suffered in my lifetime (honestly, I don't even think it's Top 3, but I don't feel like ranking them all).  The worst loss is still 2003, and I don't think that pain could ever be topped.  Sure, you can stack the 2008 Cubs position-by-position against the 2003 Cubs, and the only place the 2003 team is clearly better is right field.  But that team had Mark Prior at the top of his game and Kerry Wood as the dependable ace.  There was absolutely no way in the world that team was losing Game 6 and 7 at Wrigley Field with those two pitchers.  But they did, and I still can't really believe it.  I believed that the 2008 Cubs could lose, so I wasn't shocked when it actually happened.  And that's what disappoints me the most - I wasn't giving 100 percent as a fan when my team needed me the most.  Maybe I was just being a realist, knowing all of the team's faults after 161 games.  Or maybe, deep down, I was scared of being hurt as badly as I was in 2003.  But expecting the worst is a TERRIBLE way to watch a game, and after three games, I don't ever want to watch a sporting event with that attitude again.  Blind faith may hurt you in the end, but the journey is a hell of a lot more fun.

(Please note that at no point does this post claim that the Cubs lost because of fan attitude.  Hell, I watched these games on television in Virginia.  But a week removed from the horror, I still can't believe how quickly I gave up, and that's what makes me feel worst of all.)

I feel vaguely as you ..

It was about an inning after the Cubs stopped producing runs after DeRosa’s HR that I started to sweat. Because I also like you had this maddening premonition that this was going to be a fluke .. it was negativity I passionately rejected. But when Dempster melted down and gave up the grand slam, I knew that for some reason .. things just went into surreal territory.

And I said .. oh, crap .. not again …

Well, Next Year is here .. and Jack's century's gotta end some time .. GO CUBBIES!

Let me just say in a bit of retrospect ..

I never gave up on the Cubs .. ever. After I said .. “oh crap, not again ..” I just refused to believe it would get so bizarre. Then it did, and the silent crowd watched the Cubs lose. And that’s when the funky feeling came along. Something very intangible and very disturbing came up.

I think it really is the attitude issue. I really do. Everyone looked tight Wednesday night. So I says to myself and posted here saying in effect, “Hey, yo, Cubs Nation .. Z’s coming with his A game ..” And he did — Carlos did what he was supposed to do. He pitched brilliantly!

But the rest of the infield Cubs brought their, well .. their Z game and virtually throttled every effort he made to get out of that horrendous 2nd inning. I think at that point, the Twilight Zone Factor kicked in and the Cubs were never quite the same .. especially when again, the Cubs’ bats were shut down.

Folks, for me that Second Inning Of Game 2 will forever for me be the worst moment of Cub history I’ve ever seen. The Wild Card loss 10 years ago was nothing compared to this. For me, even the horror of 2003 didn’t come close – we were playing above our heads that year. THIS year, we should have done it. THIS SERIES should have been a good tough fight, but the Cubs chose to play their worst baseball all year long THAT inning. THAT will be the moment in which goats or fans have nohing to do with.

I kept wanting to believe. I kept thinking “COME ON, they can’t reek THAT QUICK .. not after THIS season!!”

NOT.

Well, Next Year is here .. and Jack's century's gotta end some time .. GO CUBBIES!

2008

Maybe bcuz ive been a Cubs fan my whole life it has taught me to see the glass half full. We have to look on the bright side, 1) We made it to the playoffs two years in a row 2) Our franchise is turning things around. At least we are not the pirates or the royals or even the reds, franchises who haven’t been to the playoffs or even finished above .500 since God knows when. We will continue to be a contender and we will win it all in our lifetimes

I do believe that. We've had a history the past two years every other team in the NL would love to have

It’s just that THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE YEAR

Very Nice Post

I understand how you’d feel that way. I did watch the entire games with unrelenting hope, but I also had a sinking feeling throughout. 2003 was still the deepest hurt for me as a fan, a hurt that I haven’t totally let go of, but this year to me was the biggest disappointment. After Big Z’s no hitter, I really started to think that something special could happen to this team. Oh well, as the proverbial Cubs’ fan saying goes, “there’s always next year”.

Good For You That You Recognized Your Feelings

ha, I sound like Dr. Phil….

But honestly I give you credit for realizing you shouldn’t expect the worst every time you watch the Cubs, especially in the postseason. I vowed to never get as violently angry in public as I did during Game 6 in 2003, so my solution was to not watch/listen/follow any postseason games until the Cubs were an out away from clinching the pennant.

It would be better for me to just not get so upset and stop worrying about the other shoe dropping, but I’m not there yet. Hopefully someday soon. It’s no fun feeling so jaded and scarred from the events of five years ago, but like a jilted lover I still need time to get over the anxiety and fear of getting kicked all over again.

2007 Affected 2008 Attitude

Because the Cubs did so horribly against the D-Backs in the ’07 division series, I was extremely worried when the bottom dropped out in the fifth inning of game one in the ’08 division series.

Cubs fans of my age don’t worry too much about good Cubs teams making the playoffs. We sure worry ourselves sick about the Cubs when they are playing in the playoffs.

GREAT POST

YEP, I could not have put it better…..After 2003 we knew any time the word Playoffs and Cubs appeared near each other it could spell trouble …I also was worried about Dempster starting game # 1 ..and thought that it would set the tone of the other 2 games…( when it can go wrong it will ???) maybe Next Year…..

Yes, well stated.

I’ll always remember Russell Martin’s bases clearing double in Game 2 as the exact moment in time when I gave up hope. I said to myself, out loud, “So this is how it ends.” And so it did.

I can’t help but think that, had the infield played sounder defense that inning, Big Z would have gotten out of it and – who knows – maybe the offense would have found a way to put up a few runs and Carlos would have settled in and… OK, that probably wouldn’t have happened with the way Billingsley was pitching. But, hey, it’s fun to dream.

The strangest thing is that when DeRo hit that homer

in game 1, I thought we were off to the races. Little did I know that that was the high-water mark of the series.

2008 is the most dissppointing...

…playoff performance for me for one reason, the team didn’t show up to play.

At least in 84 and 03, the team battled and actually played will enouph to win those series with a bad break or two that killed them. Even in 03, the team showed backbone by coming back from the game 6 tragedy, to come back from a 3-0 deficit in game 7 to take a 5-3 lead. A lot of teams would have cashed in after that game 6 loss, but with a little help from Dusty using THE BEST AVAILABLE PITCHERS in game 7, who knows what could have happened.

I actually felt better going into this

Demp for game 1 was OK. I’m pissed the pitching coach didn’t try to do anything before the horse got out of the barn but with him he’s always a day late and a dollar short (sorry for the rants). Who’d knew Demp would walk 7. DeRo had that 2-run shot right down the RF line in the 2nd and I’m like, alright let’s go boys, just play ball.

The eerie feeling fell over when Loney hit the granny, but again Demp had control issues the whole game except the 4th inning. Where were the coaches? Forget the talks between defencive innings when he’s on the bench. Go see him on the mound before he’s in deep doodie. May not have made a bit of difference but why not try to change to feel of the game before it got out of control?

I was at game 2. First time in my adult life I’ve been very, very close to the field. One word for the team when they were in the field defencively: TIGHT I could see it in their body language, their facial expressions, everything. Even routine pop-ups, like the one between DeRo and D-Lee seemed to be an adventure. That grounder to Lee (not really trying to pick on him but face it, he IS the best defender of the 4 that made errors that night) is made 10/10 times in the regular season. He simply just doesn’t do that.

When the lead went to 6-0 in game 2 that was pretty much it for me. The momentum was so far in LA’s favor, no way could the Cubs come back. And the biggest intangible in LA’s favor? The manager, Joe Torre. He knew exactly what had to be done, and their entire team executed to perfection. They let the Cubs beat the Cubs. They were patient at the plate, very patient. They were very selective at the plate and they hustled all the way.

My favorite play (as a baseball fan) was Furcal’s bunt. He couldn’t have thrown the ball that direction any better. Smart call, excellent execution and speed; ah that nasty word speed; the tool that never slumps.
