Whoever did this Cubs 08 VDO trib should get an Academy Award
For most heartwrenching Video of The Year.
I couldn't resist it .. I just couldn't. I dug around in YouTube for a bit looking for 2008 Cubs highlights. This video clip was among the hundreds, among many that rambled on about goats, curses, Marty Brenneman, etc.
It had the Eddie Vedder song on it, which I haven't had the stomach to listen to since the playoffs began .. because the song ultimately is a song about yearning and fulfillment, love and commitment to a journey. This is not a song a Cub fan waiting for 100 years to end wants to hear .. that "SOME DAY we'll go all the way .."
It's great to watch, and it was done clearly with an eye on keeping us all believing in the journey's end, but I have to be honest with you .. tonight, since the loss last week, as I watched this, I had to fight back tears. This one all but dug my heart out with a spoon.
But it's a great video: if you haven't seen it here it is

Yeah, that was the best one.
It was up for about a week after the clinch, until it got yanked for having MLB-owned footage in it… so enjoy it while you can… cause it’s sure to be pulled down again.
I think I read that this was done by CSN, and aired on their channel either the night of the clinch or the day after.
Wish there was a way to download YouTube videos to your hard drive, cause I prob watched this one that was posted before the playoffs about 10 times a day.

I have it TIVO-ed.
There are utilities to let you download YouTube. Google it.

Utilities as in software you can purchase or download to capture video
Easiest – Get the latest version of Real Player from Real.com’s website. .. it makes downloading almost any video on the web a snap.
For the harder stuff, get URL Finder. Worth the buy.

Tubesock
Tubesock is an application that is designed for the sole purpose of grabbing files from youtube.
It’s like 10-15 bucks.

Solution
Get it now before MLB pulls it again. Just make sure you rip the high quality version.

I just hooked my DVD recorder by super VID into my computer's video/audio cards
and recorded it.
It does good work on any video I can play on my machine, which has 2 GB of memory and 3.5 ghz processor, hooked to a DSL line. It’s probably about the same quality as if I could have downloaded the video. I’m going to try it, but if for some reason I can’t get it, at least I have this tearjerker in the can.
I’ve just had to listen to the song four times while testing recording levels. Man, that is one awesome tune. It’s kind of almost healing for me right now. It’s like the therapy I think I needed all week.

I think now I want to get a 2008 Cubs NLC champ hat. Are they being sold in Chicago still, even after the debacle?

The second is the one they wore when they clinched.

oh yeah ..
I never buy anything immediately afterwards
Problem is when I went back home to visit family in the South Burbs looking for Cub gear celebrating 2007, I couldn’t find it ANYWHERE around there. And that is NOWHERE .. I went to malls, sporting goods places, everywhere. I don’t want to miss out on this one.
I was only finally able to get a 2007 shirt when I found them on clearance at a gift shop in the Sears Tower in May of this year when I took my inlaws from TN to visit Chicago.

Cubs websites
even cubs.com sold 2007 things dirt cheap. I think official T-Shirts were only $5. Needless to say I slightly regretted buying them the day of the clinch…didn’t stop me from doing it a year later though :)

Thanks for posting that.
It was good to see. Especially loved the part scanning up the stairs as if you are walking into Wrigley Field.
I agree with what you say about the song. I find the “some day” to be wistful and a bit sad in a “some day my prince will come” sort of way. I’ll take it a step further and risk alienating myself from everyone here by saying that when it first came out, I couldn’t understand why everyone was so enamored with it. I thought the song was borderline sappy. Maybe it’s because I didn’t feel the timing was right. The team was doing so well that I thought a more up beat version that said “This time we’ll go all the way!” was more in order. Now that the lyrics feel more appropriate to me, I can stomach the song even less. Please everyone, I mean no offense to those of you that love the song, play it repeatedly, or find it therapy. It is a beautiful song. No doubt. I feel like I’m saying I don’t like puppies to come out and say this. Maybe some day I will love the song too. Just not today.

Thanks for posting this, but
1) it seems more like a tribute to the fans than the team, based on who gets the most footage.
2) it pisses me off, thinking about how far short they fell. I’m over it, but it’s too soon for highlights — for me anyway.
My next sig line quote will also be from Lou Piniella, and the first word will be either "Look", or "Listen", followed by a comma.

I think the fan factor is why I like it ..
I’m a fan, not a ballplayer. I root root root for the Cubbies. think the point of the song and the imagery of the video is that the Cubs aren’t just the Cubs without their fans. Eddie was unashamed to make that clear and in his own spare yet moving lyricism which – undeniably – changes emotional impact in light of the 2008 Cubs meltdown in October.
The Cubs are obviously the stars we want to follow, laud, brag about, pattern our swaggers by. They have free reign in the romantic dreams of World Series wish-fulfillment that every Cubs fan indulges in. Without question they also have the support, positive regard and financial $ubsidization by the most loyal fan base, IMHO, in baseball – as well as the undisputedly most long-suffering.
In light of the checkered past of recent years in which the Cubs have soared and then crashed and burned, I think it’s entirely appropriate that, we – without losing the distinction between Them and Us – start to celebrate the joy, endless faith and unity of hope that our love for the Cubs our community generates.
As I said in my own essay on my website, to have such a wonderful place to celebrate a simplicity like that in a momentary escape from a callous world full of sham and cynicism is one of the great joys of being a fan of the Cubs. Perhaps I bring my own personal agenda here to it without saying so, but to remain exiled hundreds of miles from home and enjoying any kind of connection with Chicago (sans the Shlox) that involves the Cubs is therapeutic. This was a good one ..
Well, Next Year is here .. and Jack's century's gotta end some time .. GO CUBBIES!

Healed
is what I felt after watching this video tribute. I am ready to go again. I only regret that we have to wait 4+ months now. I have posted this video on my facebook for as long as YouTube will let it stay up that is.
