I thought DLee was a bad 3 hitter

Papi hit .264/23/89 this season.

Your 2008 Missouri Tigers! #12 5-1 (1-1). Next up at Texas. Jeremy Maclin can still win the Heisman.

It was actually .264/.369/.507

Which isn’t terrible — that’s still an .876 OPS — but far below Ortiz’ career norms.

He missed 50 games with injuries. He’ll be 33 next month — wonder if his career decline is starting.

I would take that production in our three hole in an instant.

Lee slugged over .442 just once in any month, and that month was April. I still don’t understand how people are failing to grasp how poor of a year Lee had offensively. He was awful for five out of six months. Having a high OBP is good, but not enough unless you play SS.

Wow. Didn't realize his slugging was so low.

Let’s see what next year brings…maybe an improvement, or maybe not….

New Lead Off Hitter

It’s interesting to me that Francona went with Drew at lead-off.

I was voting for the Rays until I met a Red Sox fan in the locker room this afternoon

after I worked out. He really knew baseball. He told me he was from Boston, and his grandfather died without ever having seen a world series in Boston. He said he hoped that Cubs fans could enjoy the same feeling he had when the Sox won it all, and he said he’s pulling for the Cubs in the NL.

He was very afraid of the game tonight…he said he didn’t have a good feeling about it.

Guess he was right. Oh, well…go Phillies….

The Rays play with that intangible attitude that we have all been talking about

the Cubs not having in the post-season. I don’t know what it is or how you create it but they sure got it. They are just loose and fearless always look like they are having fun. I hate it when a team that hasn’t been around very long wins a WS but if they do, they earned it this year. It could be anything from the manager to the history/curse BS but there is something there that “feels” different.

I’m OK with any one of the four remaining teams winning the WS. If it’s not going to be the Cubs it doesn’t really matter much.

I usually stay loyal to the NL, but..

…I’ve got to admit it’s impressive to see a team with a $43 million payroll win one of, if not THE toughest division in baseball; then, beat up on the $133 million World Champs. Good for them, they’re a bunch of kids who play like they have nothing to lose.

+1

Go Rays. For a long time, I was against the Tampa Bay franchise because I thought it was irresponsible of MLB to put a team in Florida when the Marlins couldn’t even draw a respectable crowd. Now, I am in favor of the Rays winning it all because I think it will be fantastic for the franchise. It will bring in greater revenues to the team as well as helping to build a more stable fan base.

Maybe a WS title for Tampa...

…will help them get a new park. That place looks more like a warehouse than it does a ballpark. I doubt it though — 2 WS trophys didn’t do a whole lot for the Marlins; who only NOW are close to a new park. Maybe Spring Training is the only baseball meant for Florida.

Do all Japanese players bat left handed?

Is it because they drive on the other side of the road there or what? The Rays guy who just walked looks exactly like Dome in his stance and swing and plate patience.

If Evan hits a GS Fenway will clear out in about 10 minutes like they did yesterday.

We don’t do that do we? I have never been to a playoff game at Wrigley.

Delcarmen's ERA for this game was 135.00

Right? 5 runs. 1/3 inning.

Final comment, not that anyone is still awake here

but Fenway Park sure cleared out fast starting at the 7th inning. That was not as exciting as it could have been but it was nice to see the Rays play loose, confident and good.

I ordered some of that for the Cubs dynamic for 2009, We need a Manny or Big Papi, or Joe Pepitone or someone to create the Cubs “brand” that will finally win a WS. It could have potentially been Sori but that has reduced to a probability somewhere south of a general election to change the term limits so we can get 8 more years of Bush,

We need a leader, a communicator who understands how to motivate peers and not be intimidated by other teams strengths. And we need a leader who doesn’t consider defeat as a possible outcome, That leadership can come from management or a player, it dosn’st matter. Maybe a combo of Leo and Lombardei and Ty Cobb.

Whose the best player that could play that role both on the field and in the clubhouse, i come up with Pete Rose, Cal Ripken, Hawk, Santo, Ken Brett, Reggie Jackson, Bernie Williams, those types of guys.

The popular conceptions of the Cubs current brand fucntions like a teenage girl and a poodle; ":oh, hes so cute, such a lovable looser who deserves a sympathy fuck.. Nothing wrong with sympathy fucks but in this context I would pass on the fuck and take the WS ring. I think we want to evolve from being a poodle to being a wienmaraner.

It doesn't have to be one player performing both roles.

As I have noted, one of the key players getting the 2004 Red Sox — the team that finally broke their drought — to win was Kevin Millar, a good but not great player who led them in being “idiots”.

The best player on the 2004 Red Sox was David Ortiz, with Manny being a close second. Neither one of those was the team leader.

Exactly, I'm in violent agreement with you

I haven’t been sure what to call it in earlier posts: it’s not just being the team leader, or captain, or best athlete on the field. It’s someone who gives the team its brand identity as a winner. I still think the closest we had to that this year was Edmonds. Given the pressure on the Cubs, we probably need two.

"Violent agreement"?

I’m not sure whether to be happy or scared at that!

Hay from a season ticket hold of the Rays./Diehard Cubs fan

I have tickets for the Rays through all the World Series. I was really hoping that it was going to be the Cubs and the Rays. I laid my money down on those 2 horses and well you know what happen tot he Cubs. So Go Rays.

Tampa is so shocked it really doesn’t know what to do with itself. I am getting calls from all of the other season ticket holders I sit around and they all are saying the same thing. Can you believe this? I am so excited to see what happens.

After the Cubs disappointment I have thrown it all behind the Rays and wow what a ride.

I hope the Cubs are watching some of these games. The Rays are just doing things right and Boston can’t seem to get anything going at all.

Even though I have tickets 6 and 7 at the Trop. I don’t care. I hope the Rays put the Sowx out of there misery.

The Cubs will be great in 2008!
