Brenly on Brewers short list

Perusing the Wisconsin newspapers today... the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel is reporting that the Brewers have not settled on Dale Sveum as their manager. While Sveum is still in consideration for the gig, Brewers GM is considering a few others, all of whom have major league managerial experience.

According to the article

That group could include Bob Brenly, former manager in Arizona now a TV broadcaster for the Cubs; Willie Randolph, fired by the Mets during the 2008 season; Davey Johnson, who managed Team USA in the Olympics; and Mike Hargrove, who stepped down in Seattle this year citing "burnout."

While Brenly had just signed an extention to continue in his role as Cubs TV commentator its very likely that such a deal would allow him an out if he is offered a managerial job.

We have no idea if Brenly is simply speculation or if the writer has some inside info as to who is being considered. The phrase "that group could include..." makes it seem as though the writer is listing the usual names.

The Candidates

Johnson has had the most success of any of those thought to be on the short list in terms of victories. I’m concerned he’s been away from managing in the major leagues too long.

Brenly hasn’t been away from managing in the big leagues as long as Johnson. He certainly knows the NL Central well broadcasting for the Cubs the past four seasons.

Why would they hire Hargrove if he’s “burned out”?

Randolph has the weight of the 2007 Mets collapse on his record. The Mets played better without him in 2008 after New York dismissed him. He could be on the “retread” mill as the other three candidates are.

Based on the comments he made to the Sun-Times when he signed his new contract, I’m not sure if he still has “the itch” to manage.

Broadcasting Job More Stable

I would think that he could make more money managing, but he has far greater job security in the broadcast booth. The announcing gig is less stressful, too.

Former managers always say that...

…and then before you know it, they are gone as soon as they get a decent opportunity.

You have to remember one thing, these guys are all very competitive people and that is what helped them become professional athletes/managers etc… Once you have that, it is always tugging at you and I would not be surprised to see him take an opportunity to manage, if it is a good one.

By the way, I called this a few weeks ago and considering how well Brenley knows the Cubs and the entire division, it is smart of Milwaukee to take a hard look at him.

But, he has said

he likes this gig because the Cubs have given him time to go watch his son play ball and if he had a managers job he wouldn’t be able to do that.

by sue369 on Oct 16, 2008 4:38 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Precisely.

I keep going back to something Brenly said at a FanFest in Mesa the first year he was a Cub TV announcer: “I have a great job. I come to the park every day, have a great seat for the game, and I go home and it’s not my fault.”

I say he stays — and further, I say that the speculation in the Journal-Sentinel was just that, idle speculation.

I uderstand that...

…and I am sure he is being genuine in saying those things. My opinion is this; when guys like him are presented with what they deem a good opportunity to get back into the day to day competitive grind, it can change their perspective real quick. Once you have those competitive juices, they just don’t dry up.

In the end, he may not even view the Milwaukee gig as the right opportunity, but I highly doubt there isn’t a part of him that wants back in.

This smacks of speculation to me.

The word “could” stands out rather strikingly. If I had to guess, I’d say BB doesn’t pull the trigger on a managerial job. He’s got a sweet gig broadcasting Cubs games at the best ballpark in the land, and he’s already put in a number of years building relationships with the Cubs management and players as well as Len Kasper. What’s more, he knows the Brewers may be far less competitive next year – hell, they barely made the postseason this year.

What's BB making to sit in the TV booth?

He doesn’t have a 7-figure salary does he? If he does maybe he would just stay here.

I’ve also heard him talk with others during the broadcast how Lou looked so relaxed when he visted here in 2006 as a TV guy, and now he’s all stressed.

My guess is BB is content where he’s at, plus he’s got his extension. My guess is he won’t leave for the smallest MLB TV market.

I get the sense that Bob Brenly wants a managing gig bad...

His tenure in Arizona ended badly. He was much maligned for what happened to the D-Backs. I think he would like to vindicate himself. He wanted the Cincinnati job that went to Dusty badly, especially given his Ohio roots.

Managers with one ring have big egos. They usually would like to prove that their championship wasn’t a fluke or that they weren’t handed a team that would have won anyway. The brewers are a good young team with loads of talent in the minors. I think he would jump at that job.

Not seven figures but a lot more than most local broadcasters

I remember one of the local media columnists reported his first deal was for 700 or 800K per year, twice the going rate at the time.

Nothing to sneeze at, and it does come with one of the best jobs any baseball fan could ever have. That said, I do think he wants to manage again.

My next sig line quote will also be from Lou Piniella, and the first word will be either "Look", or "Listen", followed by a comma.

One thing an announcer mentioned...

Young asked for permission from his wife and said it would only be 4 weeks when Svuem asked him to coach. Only then did she say okay. Apparently, he’s pretty comfortable doing whatever he’s doing, but felt like he owed Sveum for the short time period he was asked.

I think it’ll be Sveum, because they’re pretty much going to suck next year anyway.

Oh, and ESPN said Randolph has been asked to be a coach for the Nationals.

I think the Brewers will desire a Sweet Lou style of manager… somebody who has experience and a winning record. I think, with them being a playoff quality team, will want somebody experienced to stir this ship instead of a manager who has no previous major league experience running a team.

I would think so anyway.

I can't see Brenly going north...

but I can definitely see why the Brewers would attempt to pursue him.

Hopefully Brenly is loyal to us.

I bet Tram learned a great deal during his first MLB managing job.

Talent definitely has a lot to do with how successful a manager is but experience allows a manager to get the most out of the talent the does have.

I’m not sure if he managed in the minor leagues before getting the job with the Tigers.

I think it’s safe to say he’d be better if he was given another chance to manage after the experience he gained managing the Tigers and as a bench coach for Lou.

I do think it’s difficult to say if Tram would be successful the second time around. Terry Francona and Joe Torre weren’t considered good managers until they won WS with the Red Sox and Yankees (and had better talent to manage).

Yes, and it's a bad one.

The Cubs swapped Charlie Grimm, managing in 1960, with Lou Boudreau, then in the radio booth. Boudreau was bad on the field (54-83) and Grimm was awful on the radio, so in ’61 Boudreau went back to announcing, where he stayed for 27 years.

The Cubs then went to the idiotic College of Coaches in ‘61. I could write a book about that, but I think I’ll stop there for now.

And Willie Randolph endeared himself to no one with his sour disposition as a manager. The Mets didn’t make the playoffs, but if they hadn’t fired Randolph, they might not have even finished over .500.

The Seattle rumors...

…must be correct, because I would see no reason for the Cubs to extend Hendry past 2010 and it sounds like it will be beyond that.

This could be good and it could be bad. If it turns out the Cubs fall below expectations the next couple of years and the farm is still not generating ML talent, you could be stuck with a GM that you may want to replace at that time. Now, the new owners could just eat that money and go in a different direction if need be, but lets hope were talkin about at least a pennant by that time.

You can't go 14 years...

…only producing 1 star position player – Soto, that just doesn’t get it done. Pitching is much easier to scout, but the organizations who identify and develop position players (especially up the middle) are the ones who are long term winners.

True, but

Wilken hasn’t been in his job that long. Hopefully, we’ll see the benefits of his drafts soon.

I hope so...

…they’re going to need it.

I generally agree that this is speculation...

But Milwaukee is one team any manager should consider. He’d be going into a great situation. Very few managers get a chance to take over a team that was in the playoffs the year before.

But, if he leaves, it paves the way for the triumphant return of Steve Stone. They should set it up like a WWE entrance.

“OH MY GOD! THAT’S STEVE STONE’S MUSIC!”

First off

Steve Stone isn’t coming back. He just signed a long term deal to take over for Darren Jackson in the Sox TV booth. Can we please not turn this into another “Steve Stone sucks” thread.

As for the situation in Milwaukee… I’m not so sure how great it is. Sabathia and Sheets are most likely gone next year, leaving them with a good buy young Yovani Gaillardo followed by a bunch of mediocrity. Prince Fielder may very well be traded and if not, his attitude is a big question mark. Beyond Ryan Braun, several of their position players took big steps backwards last season.

I won't be the one turning it into a "Steve Stone sucks" thread

Don’t blame me. It’s not my fault if people don’t see sense.

Stone wouldn't return...

…to the Cubs even if he hadn’t signed the deal with the Sox. Without McDonough onboard, who was the guy who would have made this happen (and he is the guy who would value Stone’s fan appeal over his other baggage) there is no one at the Cubs (IMO), who would pursue Stone. In fact, I do believe Hendry would throw in his two cents to whoever would have made this call with the Cubs.

Great situation?

Losing your top two starters and putting your power-hitting young 1B on the trading block isn’t exactly a “great” situation. No way they sniff the playoffs next year.

Thanks for the wild ride, Cubbies, but, in the end, I'm feeling nothing but nausea...

Oh hell no.

THAT will never happen.

Trammel likely to replace Pinella in two years

If the Cubs play well the next two years Trammel will likely manage the Cubs in 2011. He is right there making him a good choice. I see Lou retiring for good in a few years.

Possible...

…but I wouldn’t bet on it.

As I said above...

… no way. I’m not sure who will be managing the Cubs after Lou, but it won’t be Trammell.

Agree...

…I was just trying to be nice.

I’ll say the next manager of the Cubs is currently not with the organization. Not exactly a leap of faith, but it is hard for large market clubs to go with anything but a proven name manager.

Unless they groom one from within...

… which is why Ryne Sandberg and/or Jody Davis have a shot at it, once they get a little more minor league managing experience AND some time as major league coaches.

I think Pat Listach would be a great choice

but I suspect another team may snap him up before Lou retires.

You may very well be right.

Or, Listach might be made a major league coach with the Cubs to keep him around.

by Al on Oct 18, 2008 4:50 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, for some reason...

…that strikes me as unlikely. I guess I could see Trammel managing for a year if the organization was holding out for someone else. But I can’t picture him being a long-term choice, even though I like the guy.

I would say that doesn't happen

Trammel is not well regarded for his baseball acumen or ability to lead 25 guys. He was viewed as too much dumb and too much piss and vinegar in his managerial role in Detroit.

I think the top two on the depth chart right now are:

Pat Listasch and Jody Davis

Of course, no one says they have to stay in the organization, either.

Don't count Ryne Sandberg out, either.

Not counting him out, but I think Davis is ahead of him

Listasch probably gets a job before Piniella retires — maybe in Milwaukee

brenly

really like this guy but he should be managing.good luck bobby.

by NOMAR on Oct 18, 2008 3:49 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Why would Brenly want the Brewer's job?

You are most likely losing Sabathia and Sheets. Although, Sheets may need to take a one-year deal to prove he can stay healthy. The Brewers have to look at trading Fielder to get some pitching back. He is valuable, and the Brewers are one of the teams that can replace his bat within their own system. If I am Brenly I tell them I am flattered at their interest, but, no thanks.

by Nibbles on Oct 19, 2008 9:22 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

He may do that...

…but then again, he may have a desire to get back in the dugout that we don’t know about. We’ll see.

Already interviewed?

There is speculation that Brenly has already had a first interview with the Brewers front office. XM seemingly reported this as fact and one article (either ESPN or Tom Hardricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel) said that it was very possible that the Brewers GM had already met with Brenly.

Another name that is believed to be a strong candidate is Ken Macha. The Brewers GM had wanted to hire him a few years back but he ended up taking the A’s job and the Brewers went with Yost.
