Cubs and Hendry reportedly agree to 3 year deal
Well, it looks like the Seattle Mariners didn't get a chance to talk with Jim Hendry. I saw on ESPN news this morning that Jim Hendry and the Cubs agreed on a three year deal.
This, in my opinion, completes the "five year plan", the Cub's front office set a couple of years ago when they signed Derrek Lee. The only one I think has a contract that exceeds that is Soriano.
I like this deal. Not too long and not too short. Hendry is in his prime and teamed with Piniella, I think sky's the limit... unless the new owners disagree.

Your headline isn't quite true...
… this is the same report we’ve been discussing for the last few days. Yes, they’re talking, but no agreement has yet been made.
As I have asked before, I will again ask anyone who posts links from sites like this to PLEASE post the link to the original article — it’s right there on the page.
Article was in yesterday’s Sun-Times.
Thanks.

Sorry Al,
I looked through the site (without utilizing th esearch)… I’ve been extremely disconnected due the fact we’re moving and have to be out by Tuesday. Sorry for any inconvienience.
Can't wait for the Cubs in '08!!!
No inconvenience...
… just take a closer look at what you’re reading. That link was a little misleading.

I just used the words as I read them off of ESPN news
I said “reportedly”! ;)
Can't wait for the Cubs in '08!!!
Point taken.
Was it an ESPN crawl? A lot of times, those things mislead worse than AP headlines.

The media and Hendry
When you have an entiire radio station that constantly makes fun of his physical appearance it’s hard to get reliable information on Hendry, The Score talks more about his weight than his job performance. The only time that has had anything to do with his job is when he had the heart problem.
Thngs of worth are worth fighting for regardless of the odds.
Again I apologize for the other day
The off-hand comment I made about donuts and Jim Hendry was really a mocking of radio stations like The Score and other Cubs boards that put their hatred of Hendry first and foremost. Not the first time I’ve been told I do lousy impersonations.
See my post in “Hendry or Green” for a fair, balanced, and I think commendable review of Gentleman Jim.
Never, but NEVER, put ketchup on a hot dog.
Oh
I was commenting on the media missed your comment about donuts.
I liked your comments as well as the others on my Hendry vs. Green thread.
I sometimes joke myself about Hendry getting free agents to sign by threatening to eat them and I used to be one to talk.
And I made a joke once about Hendry and Lou going on the Biggest Loser together.
But you and I aren’t paid a lot of money to provide commentary on Hendry’s job performance.
The Score doesn’t like Hendry because Hendry doesn’t kiss their patooties.

Jim H. is like how I am at work
I know my limitations when it comes to leadership and chewing people’s butts to get things done. I’m much more suited to be a loyal and hard-working part of the system when there is someone above me calling the shots and making sure the overall vision of the department is being realized.

Thank you
Hey I would still be “Jessica” if that name had not been taken by some OTHER poster in ANOTHER’s teams SB Nation site and I had
been using mine longer. However I like the double entendre of “doggie stalker " anyway and I was seriously out this weekend going
after four legged dogs of all kinds while simultaneously freaking out at reports that another breed of "dog” might be retiring.

You knew that day had to come someday.
Greg’s had a heck of a career. I think it’s time to hang it up.

NOT YET
Still could play another year or two if he wants too. Interesting quote from Kevin Towers that he spoke to GM about being
a PLAYER/COACH before the trade but Towers thought he would retire . NO !!!

I hope he doesn't keep playing...
…because I already think he has stretched it a year too much.

I cannot agree with this move
At the same time I cannot worry about it either because whoever becomes the new owner will make his/her own evaluation on Jim Hendry. Having spent one billion plus to acquire the Cubs I doubt several years still owed on Hendry’s new contract will get in the way of objective decision on who should be GM under a new regime.
Hendry has definite limitations. He’s starting to look too much like Ned Coletti to me in that his main “strength” is spending big dough. Hendry has made some dubious personnel moves under his big check strategy and the farm system remains subpar.

Just curious....
4 people have said “Nay!” in the poll.
Assuming this 3-year deal appears to be imminent, what is your guys’s or gals’s reasoning?
(Assuming it wasn’t just a ‘going against the norm’ vote)
bad move
This guy can’t build a farm system. We couldn’t get CC because this guy didn’t have the talent because his drafts have sucked.
And CC Sabathia would have changed the ultimate result how?
The Cubs won the division easily without him.
And he sucked in the playoffs.

Until someone suggests a viable alternative to Jimbo...
…I’m fine with him. He doesn’t strike me as a genius, and he’s had his failures, but he busts his ass for this team and does the best he can with what he’s got. If he is resigned for three years, I can live with it.

Well.
“Does the best he can with what he’s got”
Well, Jim Hendry has got a lot !! As in a team willing to go with an escalating payroll. Hendry has had a hand in the Cub farm system since his arrival in 1996. Yet the results remain dubious. Also, take a look at his trades in those circumstances where he didn’t deal from the advantage of the other team being anxious to shave payroll. And even you would have to admit that Hendry has been less genius in the free agent market and more the guy with pen and checkbook in hand.
I call into serious question Hendry’s talent evaluation skills. I also am bothered by the fact that he often lives in denial about certain players and lets that overwhelm what objective analysis says is the right course to follow (hey, a plug of sorts for the sabermagicians!!).
Hendry is not the brightest bulb in the box. I doubt strongly he could operate under the financial constraints of a lot of other baseball organizations.

Hendry
As I’ve said elsewhere, I’m not Hendry’s biggest fan. I believe he’s very short sighted, has spend a TON of money and gotten mixed returns and overall views the game with a very narrow view. Further his financial decisions have really sunk his team into a situation where it will either a.) have little flexibility or b.) will have to raise payroll to closer to $150M/season.
That being said, I’m glad he’s being extended for potentially three years. Here’s why. First off, its clear that with the team’s ownership situation, had Hendry departed for Seattle, the team was not going to be able to land a top notch GM. My guess is that they would not even have tried, simply handing over the reigns to Randy Bush. So knowing that Hendry is not going to be replaced by someone who is going to come in and revamp the organization, you stick with Hendry. If you’re going to stick with Hendry, you make sure that he is thinking not just about the short term of saving his job, he’s also concerned about the long term health.
IMO the long term deal means very little about whether he’s here a year or so from now or not. A new owner and potentially a new president is going to make the decision on their own, regardless of the years remaining on Hendry’s deal. They have their own people and if their people want to hire someone else as GM, thats going to happen. Hendry, in the meantime, hopefully won’t dig the team deeper over the long term in order to gain a short term edge, thereby saving his job.
Very well said...
…trades and FA signings are what this club will need the next couple of years and that what Hendry can do for you. You are also right in saying they couldn’t get anyone worth anything with the sale situation.
Whether they give him 3 or 4 years will not matter, if in a couple years the club needs to be retooled because they haven’t won anything (at least a pennant), the payroll is sky high and the farm is still spinning its wheels. At that time, the new owners will just eat the last two years of his deal and bring in someone else.

About Randy Bush....
… he’s a very capable assistant. Someday either a team will snatch him away, or when Hendry decides to retire or move on, Bush will be Cubs GM.
"That's my opinion and if you don't like it, well, I have others." ~ Groucho Marx
Ugh
That’s the same kind of promotional logic that dooms most sports franchises. Randy Bush should be evaluated for any future GM job with the Cubs based on his talent, track record and vision. Not the fact that he has tenure with the organization. You hire the best and the brightest, not simply promote from within.
"Not that I don't feel like I'm part of the team, by no means, but when you get that nice celebration coming into the dugout and you're getting your ass hammered by guys, it's no better feeling than to have that done.'' -- Matt Stairs (aka The Professional Hitter)
Just because he's a member of your own staff doesn't mean he's not
the best man for the job. Too many organizations get enamored with outside people because they feel they bring an outside view to the organization or they want someone who is not guilty of organizational “group think”. Sometimes the best person for the job is right under your nose. All applicants should be evaluated evenly and in-house candidates should be given the same consideration as outside people.

Sometimes promoting from within...
…is the best choice, because those guys know the system very well and won’t miss a beat. Now, I do agree you don’t just hand it over because he knows the system, you would have to have a high degree of confidence he can do what you need for long term success – develop players. Clearly, Bush would have to convince you he would go about things differently than Hendry did, and that would yield results.

first off...
… i wasn’t the one on here posting the smack talk. I was going to urge my fellow Badger backers here to retract their comments. Frankly this is perhaps the worst Badger team I’ve seen in some time. The Iowa game is simply the cherry on the icing. After two tough losses in games the team very well could have (should have perhaps) won, the team absolutely had nothing left against a very good PSU team. After the Iowa loss I’m left thinking that Bielema has lost his team, has very little ability to judge talent, has even less ability to develop his players… I expect Juice Williams will absolutely torch the Wisconsin secondary next week when, unfortunately, my job will keep me from making the trip to Madison.
