All is well!

Pay no attention to that scoreboard!

Some changes will have to be made after this season – several of these players shink from big spots. Derrek Lee, in particular, is embarrassing himself.

wow...

Kosuke for 3 more years
Soriano for ?6 more years?
even Ramirez and Lee for 3-4 more?

all of these players with no-trade clauses (excluding KF), but if we’re going to win, it’s going to have to be with these guys…..here’s to hoping ‘experience’ pays off someday

look at what he did with 2 DL stints……so he worries me the least….better hope Vitters pans out quickly

They are on a hot streak

right now just like the Astros were a few weeks ago. That stuff happens but they are not a good team. Manny is a great hitter but that’s about it. Teams play over their heads sometimes and that’s what the Dodgers are doing at the moment. Remember the 2003 Marlins?

Nope...

But they will be playing in the NLCS barring an abrupt change from the Cubs

The best defense is a good offense.....Lou Pinella...still hasn't managed the Cubs to a post season win. D. Lee still doesn't have a post seasson RBI/Run scored for Cubs...ditto for Soriano

by bluekoolaide on Oct 2, 2008 10:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Not true at all

they were near the top in runs scored and the top in run differential…..theyre just pressing and swinging at every little slider thrown their way.

by bren on Oct 2, 2008 10:33 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm sick of hearing about run differential

The cubs were also last in the league in driving in runners from third with two out-they were smack in the middle (57-lg. average 55) driving in runners from second with less than two out. They beat up on a lot of bad teams but were UNDER .500 in one run games.
The offense was also incredibly streaky and, with the exception of one early season hot streak by Soriano, never had a Manny ramirez type who could pick the team up during a slump.

I agree..Manny is a one man wreckking crew and I’d want him on my team….but the Cubs had 13M+ tied up in left…andd Manny can’t play center…..and not sure he could play right either….

The best defense is a good offense.....Lou Pinella...still hasn't managed the Cubs to a post season win. D. Lee still doesn't have a post seasson RBI/Run scored for Cubs...ditto for Soriano

by bheidge on Oct 2, 2008 10:39 PM CDT up reply actions

And maybe giving up so many runs...

team doesn’t even get to post season…

Cub weaknesses…

1. Middle infield defense
2. TOO balanced…no superstarts/people to step up in the limelight
3. TIGHT management

You can get away with 1 poor outfielder WITH a good CF…but not 2 …no matteer how good ther CF is…

For those keeping score at home....

….if we go on to lose this we’ve lost 8 playoff games in a row, going back to ’03.

I say at this point, the only chance we have is to shake things up tomorrow. Bench theriot. Play Cedeno. Bench Edmonds and play Reed. Bench Fukudome. Definitely. Play Pie. Bench DeRo (like the fist of an angry god) and play Fontenot. These guys out there tonight don’t deserve another chance in my book.

I’m not even mad. Just disappointed in myself for actually thinking this year would be different. It’s never gonna be different until we get some players who can perform under pressure. And these aren’t them. I believed, and they fooled me. Again. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice (or thrice, or more) shame on me.

Fuck you Cubs. I want my life back.

I hate to say this, but I think this year is our chance.

It’s looking like Fukudome was a bad investment. We’re saddled with his salary for four years. Same thing with Soriano. Not producing in the postseason commensurate with his salary. Lee is declining, and this was DeRo’s career year. Pie’s not panning out. Aram is only getting older. Jimbo is OLD, and Reed was probably a flash. I can’t see us having as complete a team as this for at least the next few years.

Fukudome and Lee need to be moved.

Fukudome is a tall order – I’m afraid that we’re stuck with him for at least another year, although he’s never going to be anything other than a defensive replacement – Expensive So Taguchi.

Lee, on the other hand, has a salary that can be moved. Get it done, Hendry.

Good Lord, Theriot and Lee.

What, exactly, does Lee bring to the table?

That ball wasn’t THAT bad. A highschool 1B could pick that.

MLBMilestone.com - following the numbers to Cooperstown

by D98 on Oct 2, 2008 11:21 PM CDT reply actions

The error is on Theriot.

But if Lee is going to stink offensively and shy away from big spots, he needs to be Keith Hernandez with the glove – not make 9 errors/year and a few more in the playoffs.

a highschool pitcher wouldnt walk SEVEN batters in 42/3
a highschool manager wouldnt have left in someone who hasnt hit the ball in 3 months
and NO TEAM will ever choke as hard as the cubs EVER

Maybe a little exaggerated....

but close….

The best defense is a good offense.....Lou Pinella...still hasn't managed the Cubs to a post season win. D. Lee still doesn't have a post seasson RBI/Run scored for Cubs...ditto for Soriano

Nope

2003 was the worst. I was on a plane for most of the game and as we were landing the captain told us the score was 3-1 Cubs. I got off the plane and immediately headed to the nearest TV where the 8th was just starting. There was a guy from St Louis there (Cardinals fan) who said he was rooting for the Cubs – I should have known that was the kiss of death. Once the score got to 4-3 I went and got my luggage and by the time I made it to the car it was 8-3. That was the most physically ill I have ever felt relating to a sporting event. i was so sure we were going to win. So no, this butt kicking today doesn’t even come close.

BS bushleague 3-0 strike

How do umpires who do that make it so far in their career? I have always hated umps who expand the strikezone 3-0, but you usually don’t see them at this level…. just a pet peeve.

I don't think I could, either.

It’s not a virtue to be completely incapable of making contact against an MLB pitcher – if you gave me 100 at-bats, I probably wouldn’t ground into many double plays, either!

Thank god Ward gave that umpire an earful. He was horrific.

Lou needs to get pissed

For my career, I conduct orchestras. It is not unlike being a manger to be a conductor. You teach, you prod, you train, you try to put players in a position to succeed. Every once in a while I get pissed at my players and tell them that THEY are the problem and that their performances are unacceptable. I think Lou needs to lace into these guys and let them know hoe pitiful they have been.

by wsunick on Oct 2, 2008 11:54 PM CDT reply actions

For whatever reason, it's the only thing these guys respond to.

They need boots in their asses.

The fact that they continuously need boots in their asses is damning evidence that they need to be replaced.

WOW – Lou says he is DONE with Fukudome for 2008!
