Pay no attention to that scoreboard!
Some changes will have to be made after this season – several of these players shink from big spots. Derrek Lee, in particular, is embarrassing himself.

Every player should be accorded the privilege of at least one season with the Chicago Cubs. That's baseball as it should be played - in God's own sunshine. And that's really living."
wow...
Kosuke for 3 more years
Soriano for ?6 more years?
even Ramirez and Lee for 3-4 more?
all of these players with no-trade clauses (excluding KF), but if we’re going to win, it’s going to have to be with these guys…..here’s to hoping ‘experience’ pays off someday
Soriano still performs in the season
look at what he did with 2 DL stints……so he worries me the least….better hope Vitters pans out quickly

good pitchers can get him out, and thats all you see in the playoffs
the player who is embarrassing himself the most
is fukudome. he looks downright stupid facing any kind of a breaking ball low and away and seems to strike out every ab.

the dodgers are just way better than the Cubs
yeah the Cubs are playing like crap but I dunno how much of a shot we had even playing well.

what about the dodgers is mediocre?
great starting pitchers, great power (66 HR in 55 games with Manny)
the pink hat guy is my father
They are on a hot streak
right now just like the Astros were a few weeks ago. That stuff happens but they are not a good team. Manny is a great hitter but that’s about it. Teams play over their heads sometimes and that’s what the Dodgers are doing at the moment. Remember the 2003 Marlins?
Nope...
But they will be playing in the NLCS barring an abrupt change from the Cubs
The best defense is a good offense.....Lou Pinella...still hasn't managed the Cubs to a post season win. D. Lee still doesn't have a post seasson RBI/Run scored for Cubs...ditto for Soriano
you guys are all judging the dodgers pre-manny
they have been on fire with manny. he really changes a lineup
the pink hat guy is my father
I don't have the numbers
but they definitely have not been “on fire”
They played well in September but not in August
what was their record after Manny got there
they are a completely different team since he joined them

Is it just me or
are the Cubs sphinters really really tight the first 2 games?
Why?
Is the 100 year thing that big a deal?
The Red Sox had something close to it, yet they came through!!!
they had better players

at least put in bob howry so the fans can release the boo birds
it is ridiculous that we will be down 2-0 and we can’t blame howry for any of it.

do they add a number spot on the ac board

No, we shouldn't.
We should lose because it would get us a better, um, draft pick of, um, well, I mean, we’ll have a great pick of stories to hear about instead of the hundred-year thing?
I’m sure the professional baseballers we’re all fans of will try to win, and we? Well, we’ll watch them.
Down 6-0....
and he pitched well? Obviously not good enough….but you’lll never win when you don’t score
The best defense is a good offense.....Lou Pinella...still hasn't managed the Cubs to a post season win. D. Lee still doesn't have a post seasson RBI/Run scored for Cubs...ditto for Soriano
Yeah, down 6-0... and yeah, pitched well.
Have you been watching? The D cost him most of those runs. Should be 1-0 right now.

Not true at all
they were near the top in runs scored and the top in run differential…..theyre just pressing and swinging at every little slider thrown their way.
Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.
I'm sick of hearing about run differential
The cubs were also last in the league in driving in runners from third with two out-they were smack in the middle (57-lg. average 55) driving in runners from second with less than two out. They beat up on a lot of bad teams but were UNDER .500 in one run games.
The offense was also incredibly streaky and, with the exception of one early season hot streak by Soriano, never had a Manny ramirez type who could pick the team up during a slump.

To play him where?
I agree..Manny is a one man wreckking crew and I’d want him on my team….but the Cubs had 13M+ tied up in left…andd Manny can’t play center…..and not sure he could play right either….
The best defense is a good offense.....Lou Pinella...still hasn't managed the Cubs to a post season win. D. Lee still doesn't have a post seasson RBI/Run scored for Cubs...ditto for Soriano
And maybe giving up so many runs...
team doesn’t even get to post season…
Cub weaknesses…
1. Middle infield defense
2. TOO balanced…no superstarts/people to step up in the limelight
3. TIGHT management
You can get away with 1 poor outfielder WITH a good CF…but not 2 …no matteer how good ther CF is…

I wanted to be positive
I wanted to believe! So badly!!!!!!!!!!!!
You can’t tell me that 2nd inning the team didn’t feel 100 years of history on them. Those are routine plays during the season.
It’s going to take a special bunch to break this, just like the Red Sox in 04. Does the management have the drive to get us to where we want to be?
Remember during the season Al would say "remember where you were when this happened, it is a memorable season"
well i remember everyone of those moments and i can NOT believe this is the same team. Now I will just remember sitting at the computer on the verge of tears

Memories of this postseason will trump any memory of our "special" regular season
No matter what happens.
I haven’t felt this low about any team in a long time.
If we go down like this again
This year will be below ’07 and even ’98 in my book. At least those had exciting moments during the season. This whole year was a leadup to the playoffs and look at what they give us…
Surprisingly
I still have hope we can pull this out to game 5 and make it happen.

…for whatever reason, I think this team needs to get out of town. I like Harden starting on Saturday and I hope Lilly starts on Sunday. I really think this thing is going to go 5 games. I can’t see this offense going silent another game.
"I'm petrified of nipple chafing. Once it starts, it's a vicious circle." Andy Bernard
Going to have to start a
3 game winning streak starting Saturday.
3 game winning streak……..that shouldnt be too tough should it?
we would have to beat lowe
would be real tough. these dodgers pitchers are great
the pink hat guy is my father
For those keeping score at home....
….if we go on to lose this we’ve lost 8 playoff games in a row, going back to ’03.
I say at this point, the only chance we have is to shake things up tomorrow. Bench theriot. Play Cedeno. Bench Edmonds and play Reed. Bench Fukudome. Definitely. Play Pie. Bench DeRo (like the fist of an angry god) and play Fontenot. These guys out there tonight don’t deserve another chance in my book.
I’m not even mad. Just disappointed in myself for actually thinking this year would be different. It’s never gonna be different until we get some players who can perform under pressure. And these aren’t them. I believed, and they fooled me. Again. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice (or thrice, or more) shame on me.
Fuck you Cubs. I want my life back.

When the spotlight shines bright, they disappear completely. They are scared to death.

I hate to say this, but I think this year is our chance.
It’s looking like Fukudome was a bad investment. We’re saddled with his salary for four years. Same thing with Soriano. Not producing in the postseason commensurate with his salary. Lee is declining, and this was DeRo’s career year. Pie’s not panning out. Aram is only getting older. Jimbo is OLD, and Reed was probably a flash. And he compounds it by letting him bat in THIS GIANT SPOT.
This is PRECISELY why Daryle Ward is on this team. I cannot believe that Lou did that. That was Dusty-level negligence. Managerial malpractice.

Two men on base.

He’s a good manager. What is his problem?!

he is a great manager. something has gone hay=wire here. it is not over. somehow we will bring tis back to th n side for a trip to the nlcs
If we win 2 games in LA
I think we should petition to stay there, we obv can’t play very good at Wrigley.
On second thought lets play at Miller Park

Hopefully.....
Marmol will be ready to pitch this weekend if the Cubs need him
The best defense is a good offense.....Lou Pinella...still hasn't managed the Cubs to a post season win. D. Lee still doesn't have a post seasson RBI/Run scored for Cubs...ditto for Soriano
It the same score of the Colorado comeback game...

At this point....
it’s what’s going on between their ears. They only needed to do what they did all year, win games at home. They just can’t seem to get it together in the post season.

I would be
if it was possible but I think I’m stuck with this team forever. I may take the first 5 months or so off next season though.
The organization is doing everything right.
The problem is the guys wearing blue tonight.

Sorry man, not me.
I’m in it until I die. And both of my sons will be too. One is 3 1/2 and sings Go Cubs Go like he’ll never hear it again and the other is 15 months and already loves the sounds of Pat and Ron.
No matter what, I will NEVER stop rooting for the Cubs.
In 2001
We were in and out of first place all summer, and in September, when my brother was dying and in a drug-induced coma, I monologued the entire end of the season, ending with a Series victory. He was in it until he died, too. We’ll all be here for the duration. My dad is 55, my boy is 2, and we’ll all follow this team for our entire lives. We’re fully invested here. That’s why we watch.

Like I said above
I will never, ever stop rooting for the Cubs to win. When it doesn’t happen, it makes me very.very sad but I love the uniform and anybody who wears it.
Well
This sure was a fun couple of exhibition games. I think we worked all the kinks out.
When do the playoffs start?

it (a championship) was just
not meant to be easy, hang in there cubs: we will cause an earthquake in LA. just watch & see..
We need some sort of mass disqualifying event.
A new chapter in the Mitchell report consisting entirely of current Dodgers.
MLBMilestone.com - following the numbers to Cooperstown
I absolutely believe
that we can win three in a row. We need somebody to really step up offensively to make it happen.
Maybe the Dodgers scored their 16 runs...
for a 5 game series already…

Fukudome and Lee need to be moved.
Fukudome is a tall order – I’m afraid that we’re stuck with him for at least another year, although he’s never going to be anything other than a defensive replacement – Expensive So Taguchi.
Lee, on the other hand, has a salary that can be moved. Get it done, Hendry.

What, exactly, does Lee bring to the table?

The error is on Theriot.
But if Lee is going to stink offensively and shy away from big spots, he needs to be Keith Hernandez with the glove – not make 9 errors/year and a few more in the playoffs.

Nope
2003 was the worst. I was on a plane for most of the game and as we were landing the captain told us the score was 3-1 Cubs. I got off the plane and immediately headed to the nearest TV where the 8th was just starting. There was a guy from St Louis there (Cardinals fan) who said he was rooting for the Cubs – I should have known that was the kiss of death. Once the score got to 4-3 I went and got my luggage and by the time I made it to the car it was 8-3. That was the most physically ill I have ever felt relating to a sporting event. i was so sure we were going to win. So no, this butt kicking today doesn’t even come close.
1984 was worse
In 2003, we had the future in front of us.
Also, in 1984, I was nine.

How do umpires who do that make it so far in their career? I have always hated umps who expand the strikezone 3-0, but you usually don’t see them at this level…. just a pet peeve.

I don't think I could, either.
It’s not a virtue to be completely incapable of making contact against an MLB pitcher – if you gave me 100 at-bats, I probably wouldn’t ground into many double plays, either!

Lou needs to get pissed
For my career, I conduct orchestras. It is not unlike being a manger to be a conductor. You teach, you prod, you train, you try to put players in a position to succeed. Every once in a while I get pissed at my players and tell them that THEY are the problem and that their performances are unacceptable. I think Lou needs to lace into these guys and let them know hoe pitiful they have been.
For whatever reason, it's the only thing these guys respond to.
They need boots in their asses.
The fact that they continuously need boots in their asses is damning evidence that they need to be replaced.
WOW – Lou says he is DONE with Fukudome for 2008!
