The Biggest Game Of Z's Life: NLDS Game #2, Cubs vs. Dodgers, Thursday 10/2, 8:30 CT
Los Angeles Dodgers at Chicago Cubs, Oct 2, 2008 8:37 PM CDT

I have gotten bashed before for calling games "must-win". But I think all of you agree that tonight's game comes under that category. The starting time, as we have discussed before, is bizarre -- there's no reason it couldn't have been at least 30 minutes earlier -- meaning that we're not likely to be finished at Wrigley tonight till near midnight.
Which Z will show up? The no-hit Z? Or the one who stomped off the mound in his next start before Lou even got there in the second inning? It needs to be the former. Most importantly, the big bats have to start hitting the way we know they can.
A reporter from the LA Times named Jim Peltz hung out with us in the bleachers for about half of last night's game. My friend Jeff and I got quoted. I thought that was a pretty good article which captured what it's like out there without resorting to the usual tired old "drunken bleacher bum" garbage.
I received an email today from Chris Speakman, who does sports-related art at his site Sports Propaganda, up to now concentrating on the Red Sox in his native Boston. Here is his first Cub-related poster (done in what he calls "1940's propaganda style":
The Gratuitous Geo Photos don't appear to be working too well. So let's try this one, an Upper Deck 2005 baseball card image:

Z's season record, which no doubt the TV yakkers will make a big deal of, vs. the Dodgers is 0-1, 4.91. However, that includes this outstanding performance on May 28 at Wrigley Field, when he was taken out behind 1-0 after 8 innings -- that was the game where he threw 130 pitches and started to get the "shoulder discomfort" after. He gets hit hard by Russell Martin (8-for-13, a homer -- which was hit on June 7 at Dodger Stadium).
Chad Billingsley is also 0-1 vs. his opponent, the Cubs, tonight, with an identical 4.91 ERA. In Billingsley's case, though, the Cubs hit him both times -- a two-run homer by D-Lee on May 26 at Wrigley Field beat him, and he gave up homers to Mark DeRosa and Kosuke Fukudome on June 5 at Dodger Stadium, which helped the Cubs to a 5-4 win, though they had to come back and win it off the Dodgers' closer, Takashi Saito, after Bob Howry blew a 4-3 lead.
Today's game is on TBS again. I'd suggesting turning the sound completely off before you get the idea to maybe throw a brick through your TV.

I'm not 100% sure of this but
I believe the only team ever to come back 0-2 in a five game series is the 1984 Padres.
So what I’m saying is yes, this is a must win!

Do they sit Fukudome tonight??
or leave him in for the defense against that lefty lineup??
If they leave him in he has to be dropped to the 8 hole I believe…

Ya,
Why was he in the number 2 hole last night. I wondered about that last night. Was Lou trying to space out the lefties in the lineup?
My guess
is that he was hoping to capture a little mojo from an unexpected source, and also give Fukudome-san a vote of confidence. Bit of a roll of the dice…..

Baseball is so quirky
You play 162 games to see which team really is the best, then throw the dice on a best of five series…. In an older world the Cubs would be playing the Angels in the World Series right now.
My campaign and this team stand on the precipice of greatness...

Another game key
Its been more than a few days since Wood and Marmol last pitched. I wonder if it would have served the team well to let both shake off the rust last night. I just hope if its a close situation late in the game that these two have their stuff.
I don't care if
we win by only one run, I just want a win. I just want the Z that doesn’t get rattled to pitch tonight.

Depending on the Ump and the strikezone that get called, Zambrano needs to keep his emotions in check
More important
is Z pitching well. All this other stuff is meaningless BS. He gets mad when he pitches poorly, so we need him to pitch well.

Get on your damn feet...
….make everyone else around you do the same thing, SMILE, and have fun.
Seriously — we win if the Cubbies and their fans have fun….
Keys are simple
Zambrano has to have good mental health day and give his team 6 strong innings.
Soriano has to produce offensively.
I will be very disappointed if Kosuke is in the lineup again. DeRosa needs to find a way to play right field on his bum wheel so Mike Fontenot can get in the lineup.
Oh please let this dubious bullpen be good enough in the playoffs...

Again, I take no issue with the crowd last night. The fans are naturally uptight and apprehensive because they’ve been down this path before. Until proven otherwise by the players on the field the fans will have impending doom be their mood.

Theriot
Very simple. He is better at getting on base. Check their stats. I do not put the sole blame on any one player.

i agree that Theriot gets on base better
I just hope DLee doesn’t hit into another double play if he does get on
Lee should be able to generate some lift on the ball tonight.
Lowe is great at getting ground balls. Billingsley, not as much so as Lowe.

I’ve never understood the whole Cubs-Sox hatred thing (I’m not from here), but in the last couple of weeks I’ve heard a several Cubs fans offer support or at least well wishes to the Sox. And the response has always been that they couple return them because they hated the Cubs so much.

Brewers should thank the Cubs
for not tanking the Mets games. And then the Cubs put in their AAA team last saturday and the Brewers still couldn’t pull out a win. That was a gift. And on THEIR clincher the Cubs put out the “also ran” pitching staff.
The Suds fans have different goals...
I think they were happy to make the play-offs, and anything else is gravy. We are in the play-offs for the second year in a row, have the best record in the national league and have much higher expectations.
I am not excusing obnoxious behavior on our site, as I always try to stay positive. I am just saying that the average fan on each site has very different expectations.

I was there last night.
Didn’t hear the boo birds for the most part. And I’m sick of this crap about the fans being shitty last night. What were we supposed to cheer about? Demp was in and out of jams early and often, and that grand slam was as deflating as it gets. We never put together a rally to get the crowd going. The game is won and lost by the players on the field. I will agree that fans can have an effect on the game, but it’s not that incredibly significant. Although I’m sure cwyers has the numbers on that.
I feel much better now, and that was not directed at anyone specifically. Go Cubs!

i heard some booing
on a few calls. they were booing the umps, not demp or the rest of the team, as far as i could tell. and a few dodger players.
until the end.
Like I said earlier, it's been all over the media how quiet & subdued the crowd was last night...
I think the fans going tonight will definitely be into the game from the very start & LOUD from start to finish. They are going to rally around the team and give them the home field advantage.

Billingsley has given up quite a few baserunners his last couple starts as well.

Chicago is emotionally torn, too
Because of a Cubs loss and a White Sox loss.
I have Dodger fans all around me in West LA.
Cubs need to win. Let’s put these fair weather Dodger fans in their place, starting TONIGHT!
wake up those bats, Cubs…please.
THIS IS OUR CENTURY!!
How's your cold, dude?

actually it is a sinus infection with bad asthma.
just knocked down some codeine cough medicine as I continue to cough up a lung.
A low stress Cub victory would sure help.
Thanks for asking!

Feel better, man.

thanks for the wishes.
Now I need a low stress Cub win.

True confession...
Last night’s loss was all my fault — I failed to make my predictions as I had promised to do. Sorry, guys, I won’t let it happen again.
Tonight’s predictions:
1. Z will bring his A game tonight.
2. Sori will get on base leading off the game.
3. DeRo will have at least one XBH.
4. Soto will visit the bleachers.
5. A Cubs OF will make a great catch.
6. (from out of LF…) The Riot will commit two early errors, but then redeem himself with 2 HRs.
7. Z will pound LBR into the ground, and Lou won’t be able to find him when he needs a PH.
8. Kerry Wood will record a save.

Just like the Cubs game last night
CC was squeezed by the ump, walked two and then gave up a grand slam. Squeezing a pitcher to make him lose his mind….that’s what Demp and CC went through.
"I'm not much of a chemistry guy, you know. Chemistry to me is a pinch-hit double with the bases loaded"--Jim Frey, Chicago Tribune, 1985.
You're right...
but what has been frustrating this year is the inconsistency with the same umpire during a game. I can understand how each umpire might have a different zone and even different zone from one game to another and good pitchers and hitters alike should adjust to that. What was going on last night with the Cubs and today with CC is how the zone changed from one at bat to the next. It did look like, in both grand slam pitches, that the pitcher was just trying to throw a batting practice strike to finally get a call after not getting close calls that were called strikes in other ABs in the same game or even same inning.
Tommie Agee was out.

He has been dormant for over three weeks. time to break out!!
This team really does do a hell of a lot better when Fonzi is ON.
THIS IS OUR CENTURY!!
I'm worried that Sori won't be patient.
And get burned by the nasty hook of Billingsley.
I saw some highlights of him pitching earlier, and (sure it was highlights), but his junk looked pretty wicked.
All he needs is one mistake and he can change a game

Cubs deserve to lose, the Dodgers want to win more. This team doesn’t have the balls to win
This is such an embarassment
I’m 40 years old and this is the worst moment of my Cub fandom. This is worse than 2003. That team put some things together at the end but this team was a force all season long only to roll out this turd. I hate these guys..

Wow
Funny what happens when the stabilizing force of regular BCBers is gone. I read through some of the posts on here and am frankly disgusted at the spewing foulness. To think that the Brewers fans, though much smaller in numbers, on their blog actually are more upbeat about their chances — and they scraped their way into the playoffs. I’m a realist too, and I understand the daunting task ahead…but damn, we are better than this. I look forward to the warmer weather and huge ballpark at Chavez Ravine. Our rotation is still deeper than theirs going out, and maybe these Cubs will calm down a little, regroup, get those soft hands back in the infield, and forge ahead. Don’t forget their abilities…we all had their backs this season there is still baseball to be played.
The 9th inning
Hopefully this will carry over. They need to stop swinging at the same crap (low and away pitches) and spend tomorrow and Saturday working on groundballs. It would also be nice to see Johnson get some playing time in CF. That guy is a spark plug. If DeRosa is healthy enough, put him in RF and Fontenot at 2nd.
Fuck the Cubs, this is the most pathetic franchise in sports
There is no curse!!! Its just 99 years of huge, failing losers! Dont show up next year Lee, DeRosa or Theriot, especially Theriot, you are horrible
"This is why Major League Baseball does not need instant replay, because then every single play will then be reviewed." -- Joe Morgan, 5/18/08, referring to an umpire ruling a Carlos Delgado homerun foul when replays showed it hit the foul pole.
THIS IS NOT OVER
Alright, Im sorry but I never EVER intended the Cubs to sweep the playoffs. I always dreamed the Cubs would overcome ever odd and win every series as dramatically as possible. While the odds are against us, I highly advise all of you to go back and read Al’s summaries and remember this is a MAGICAL season. We have Harden and then Lilly over their 4 starter. If we can do that, it goes back to Wrigley. This is not over. Please have faith!
To fans of other teams
I completely respect all fans of other teams, and also like a good baseball debate, but any fans of other teams here talking shit WHAT are you doing? Have some respect
