Cubs and Yankees in talks for Cubs to play opener of new Yankee stadium.
It's probably been mentioned here but I haven't seen it. Just saw this on Yahoo that the games most futile franchise, the Chicago Cubs, are the Yankees first choice to open up the new Yankee stadium, in 1 or 2 unofficial games on the weekend before the April 6th opener. The teams are still in negotiations and are close to a deal.
I can just hear the comparison's between the 2 franchises now and all the "last things to happen before the Cubs have won a World Series" and yada yada, and the endless babble of Cub jokes and in contrast how great and mighty the Yankees franchise has been. It's kind of sadistic for the Yankees to want to play the Cubs. Does Steinbrenner need his ego stroked that much these days? so in that regard, I really don't care if the Cubs open up new Yankee stadium, even in an unofficial game. Years from now, noone will remember. 75 words yet?
Why start a new season with an instant kick in the stones? Eff that.

No thanks...
The Cubs shouldnt stroke the Steinbrenners ego….why play an unnecessary exhibition game when the season starts in matter of days from that proposed date.

Because you can split the ticket revenue with the Yankees?
It’d be just like a set of spring training games. Roll the starters out for three innings and send in the clowns.

This is just utterly pointless
Who cares about split revenues from one meaningless exhibition game, its not worth the injury risk

So you have a choice of who the Cubs play that day
The Mariners in Las Vegas or open the New Yankee Stadium. Either way the Cubs are playing that game.

Ah, but you could sell more than twice the tickets to a game in a MLB park,
which would generate more revenue. The games in Las Vegas are in a minor league park.

The Cubs play meaningless exhibition games to start the season anyway.
The question is simply whether these get played in Mesa, Las Vegas or New York. From a revenue point of view this is a no-brainer.

Ah, but...
… Vegas isn’t that far from Arizona, and relatively convenient to get to the opener in Houston.
Why they’d want to take a four-hour flight to NYC, then a three-hour flight back to Houston, is beyond me.

Pretty sure that these games don’t count toward revenue sharing, too.

Right...
…and since it’s the first game in the new Yankee Stadium, and since it’s a big draw like the Cubs that rarely plays the Yankees (interleague schedules like to split up the big revenue teams, outside of the historic rivalries) you’re almost guaranteed to sell the place out for one or both games.
by cwyers on Oct 21, 2008 10:51 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
These pre-season games...
are usually a forced buy to Season Ticket holders. At regular season prices.
Out here the A’s require their STH to buy the Giants @ A’s preseason game, and the Giants have three pre-season games at home to bump their season package to 84 games. The D-backs base their package on 83 games at Chase Field, last year that included a Mexican League team playing them at the end of Spring Training. The Angels and Padres do this as well.
It’s a pretty safe bet that whatever pre-season games are at the Stadium will wind up as part of the season ticket package as well. That would guarantee a sellout,

no different than what every single NFL team has done for years.
If they say the season ticket package is 82 or 83 games, what else can you do?
The Brewers played KC twice at Miller Park in March last pre-season; in 2007 their pre-season games were part of the season ticket package (I couldn’t find 2008 info but bet it’s the same.) I’m sure I could find more examples.
When the Cubs and the Sox used to play the Crosstown Classic during the season, were those part of the package, or optional?

Actually, no one is "making" the Cubs do anything in this situation.
The organization is responsible for the decision as to where to play the last exhibition games before the regular season begins.
The bottom line is if these games happen between the Yankees and Cubs, they will be held to generate revenue (for both the Yankees and Cubs). Many people want the Cubs to spend the money to put the best possible team on the field and the reality is they must increase revenue to do so.
On the flip side, the Yankees have spent an enormous amount of money to build this stadium and they are looking to generate the most revenue possible and that is why they would want the Cubs to come as they are one of the biggest draws in MLB.
The bottom line is if the increase in revenue is significant enough, it would be good business to do make this deal.
Hey, it's a new century!

It'd be to help generate revenue?
Are you serious? It wouldn’t matter if the Yankees were playing the Cuban Little League World Series team, that first game will be sold out regardless. And how hard up are the Cubs for that extra “revenue” everyone on here is talking about? Pullleeeassee.. This just doesn’t make sense. I think it might be cool but when you factor in the travel and the constant questions the team will face about playing for a franchise wish has shown nothing but ineptitude compared to how it’s like playing such a mighty organization to open up a new stadium which will inevitibly bring more mighty things, I say pass.
Now, some teams would take that kind of talk and put in place comments as a motivator and use that type of talk to inspire them , but obviously this team isn’t one of
them. This team’s psyche is too fragile obviously to handle that kind of circus atmosphere to open up a season.

Relegated?
The Vegas thing has become something of a standard deal for them, but I’ll give you “relegated” since Cashman Field is pretty dumpy. But geez, the Cubs spring training home is in the Phoenix area (Mesa) not unlike alot of other teams, of course they will play there during the spring. And as its been mentioned Vegas works out due to its close proximity to AZ, and its usually not too far away from destination one of the season. I see your point, nice to see them play in another venue just for kicks…but I have to say NY would not be my first pick.

Take a look at the Cubs payroll and the Astros payroll
The revenue the Cubs would get from that exhibition game would be a pittance compared to the payroll. The Astros on the other hand and their attendance last year it did make sense for them to take that game in Milwaulkee.
I don’t think you’re compares apples with apples here. The Cubs are a money machine set on cruise control and they can already predict their bottom line for 2009. The importance for 2009 is a World Series and not making a couple extra hundred thousand in a meaningless game. Granted, if they did play 2 games, I imagine all the starters will not even be in New York but my point is, I really don’t think that the main decision for the Cubs to play this game is one of “extra” revenue, as much as you seem to think.

The Yankees don't have problems selling tickets.
And there’s a real novelty factor here, given that it’s the first time to see the new park. If the Cubs are there, you can litterally bill it as a game against (most of) the NL All-Star team. I don’t see how selling this thing is going to be a problem.

There have been other such games.
Almost none of them have sold out.
Now, they may make Yankee season ticket holders buy them as part of their packages, but otherwise, I’d think they’d have a tough time selling them out, particularly the first weekend of April in NYC, when the weather can be iffy.

The new stadium will be a bigger draw than you think.
The Cardinals sold out their “first” game in the new Busch Stadium in less than a day and it was only an exhibition against the AA affiliate. People just wanted to go to see what the new stadium was like.

Me
I would love to go to that game! Even if it’s exhibition.
I mean who knows when Cubs will come to NY to the play Yankees again. They only did it once in interleague thus far.
Other than the All Star Game this is one of the few times we’d get to see Yankees play against Cubs.
Plus maybe at this ball park more than 1 Cub will hit a HR in the ballparks career.

I think that's a big reason why the Cubs are the Yankees first choice for these games.
It gives them the best chance to maximize the revenue potential for the games.
Hey, it's a new century!

Lots of other teams sell pre-season games at full price...
every year—why wouldn’t the Yankees?

The answer to that Aflack question would not be the Cubs,
but the Cleveland Indians. In all reality the CUbs Yankees game is completely meaningless, along with all the hype that would mangle around it.
