World Series Game #1: Phillies vs. Rays, Wednesday 10/22, 7:35 CT
Yes, there's still baseball. And yes, it's the World Series. I'll open a discussion thread for every game... because when it's over, that means no baseball till spring.

Also
I’m surprised they didn’t show the comeback against the brewers with 2 out in the 9th

as in...they make us clutch our stomachs or our groins when the playoffs start?
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

Isn't it our own individual faults

I'm rooting for the National League...
…where nine players take the field, and nine players come to bat — the way it was meant to be!

Heh
I agree, hopefully the NL will take it…but what do you think we would say if the AL and DH had come first? I guess we wouldn’t be traditionalists…

Can't say, I'm not good with what-if's
I guess I just prefer the strategy in the NL — IMO, the DH takes a lot of the nail-biting away from the game.

Its pretty easy
We would still prefer the NL strategy…it just wouldn’t be considered as “old school”.

I will be listening from work with another
Cubs fan dispatcher. We aren’t excited or even really interested, but like Al said, once these games are over, so is baseball until next spring. Gotta do something to counteract my exposure to crappy football while I can!

Damn.
These guys are butchering the National Anthem IMO.

but it won’t happen…..

I was looking forward to this game
but since it started I just can’t get interested. I thought I was over the 08 Cubs but I guess not yet.

That was a balk, no doubt.
And if FOX had a f-ing camera from the 1st base side, we would be able to tell WAY easier.

You could tell it was a balk even from the CF shot
Joe’s conversation with Welke was interesting. I would have been more upset than Joe was. I guess that’s why he’s managing in the show and I am in middle school (coaching that is, not as a student.)

Thanks to Jason Bartlett of the Rays…

If it's a "technical balk",
do you have to have ketchup?

Good game. I hope Lidge comes through.

Lidge gets the third out--2 K's and a foul out. It's his 50th straight save. Wow.....

I've only been watching the Rays the last few weeks here and there is something I don't get:
BJ Upton gets a free pass from all the media about his lolligagging way of sauntering after fly balls that are over his head or in front of him. He’s terrible in his positioning or lack of it. He can hit a ton and that’s great and he has a cannon arm but why doesn’t he play the position the way every outfielder is taught from day one: go to where the ball is going to be and then get in position to have your body moving toward your throwing target to get all your momentum in the same direction. I haven’t heard one announcer mention anything other than someone said “he’ll get better at that when he gets older.” Well Hell he’s already a starting ML CF starting in a WS. Play it like you respect it.
Tommie Agee was out.

During the game they interviewed Joe Madden and he commented that his approach to the ball
was off some, on the play where he nailed the guy at the plate. So, when your own manager makes a comment it’s not being ignored in a significant manner. The guy nailed the runner at the plate, that’s pretty impressive if you ask me.
by DudeVf11 on Oct 23, 2008 12:22 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
It is impressive
I’m not at all saying the kid doesn’t have talent. He just plays CF like the stereotypical attitude of someone who plays pick up basketball games in LA. I would have thought Maddon would have made some impact on that attitude by now. I’d take him for our CF in a heartbeat, assuming someone will mature the kid.

I don't know much about him...
but I believe that CF is not his natural position. I think he came up through their system as an infielder and only started playing CF on a regular basis in the ML. Maybe his approach is from lack of coaching/experience.
