Don't everybody jump on the gamethread at once...

I kinda thing this one’s gonna be a home run derby. Shields can have difficulties early in games, and Myers as a #2 in the World Series isn’t something I’m feelin’. The Rays will probably even this series up tonight.

If anybody knows what Woot! is...

their most recent Woot-Off item’s comments mentioned the Cubs, and I think it’s quite funny. A strong jab us Cubbies fans…

Fox's "Keys To The Game"

aren’t actually keys.

Philly’s was: “Where’s Ryan Howard?”, which to that I retort, at first base.

And the Devil Rays’ was: “Don’t wanna go to Philly 0-2”. No shit.

Six

My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver

There's no way in hell Brett Myers' curve is one of the best five in baseball.

Here’s some dudes I can think of with much better curves:

Zito
Oswalt
maybe Wood?
King Felix
Halladay

Wasn’t Prior’s pretty sick a few years ago, too?

Anyway, Myers’ curve isn’t top 5, I’m certain it’s probably not even top 10. FOX, you’re idiots.

I really don't think any ideas should be off-limits.

If you can get a player with more value (to the Cubs) for Lee, then by all means, do it. I wouldn’t go out of my way to do it, though.

Can't we just create a SS/leadoff

like in Madden? Bats switch, throws right, about 6’2", 195 lbs, above average speed, good range to his left, doesn’t like to dance or wear necklaces (think Reyes…only opposite), and……..how bout doesn’t wear batting gloves? Can’t we just do that?

Everyone on FOX is bitching about Howard's homer-less streak.

FOX is dumb, Part 3.

He’s gone 12 games in a row this season without a home run, which is one MORE game than the “drought” he’s in now. The guy hit 48 dongs with 146 ribbies while batting .251, give him a fucking break. When he’s hot, he’s hot. When he’s not, well, that’s why 146 RBIs witha .251 average is one of the lowest averages with one of the highest RBI totals in baseball history.

by dtpollitt on Oct 23, 2008 9:18 PM CDT reply actions

In 2071 career ABs, and 177 HRs (not counting playoffs), Howard’s career HR per AB is 11.7. That is ridiculous. Like Not-On-Roids-But-Still-Hits-The-Cover-Off-The-Ball ridiculous.

Phillies look a lot like the Cubs....

or at least they leave runners on base like the Cubs…

The best defense is a good offense.....Lou Pinella...still hasn't managed the Cubs to a post season win. D. Lee still doesn't have a post seasson RBI for Cubs...ditto for Soriano

The sabermagicians will ridicule the crap out of the following, but...

The Phillies have a lineup full of talented hitters. But equally important they have a lineup full of “ballplayers.” Chase Utley, Jayson Werth, Shane Victorino, Greg Dobbs, Matt Stairs….they are “ballplayers.” We have two such guys on our roster….Mark DeRosa and Reed Johnson. We need more guys like this.

I’ll open up the floor to mockery and such. But I know a handful on this board know precisely what I speak of. It falls into the category of discussion on “chemistry.”

"Not that I don't feel like I'm part of the team, by no means, but when you get that nice celebration coming into the dugout and you're getting your ass hammered by guys, it's no better feeling than to have that done.'' -- Matt Stairs (aka The Professional Hitter)

LOB...

kills even the best of them……Phils got away w/ it last night…but it bit’em in the a$$ tonight….

Many LOB...

…can be frustrating to watch, but I also think this tends to happen a lot to the better offensive clubs because they are simply getting more guys on base. The Phils offense reminds me a little of the Cubs from 04, except, the Phils have a legit base stealing threat (with numerous guys) which adds a dimension that helps offset reliance on just power.

Werth is a guy who can take some of the most futile swings you have ever seen his first couple AB’s, and then get a big hit late in the game. As a rule, they seem to have good “baseball smarts” and they are aggressive.

First time I have to admit I agree with you

I’m taking your definition of “ballplayer” to include all the usual physical talent and ability to play the game as well as that chemistry we have been talking about the last few days. I think Shane Victorino and Evan Longoria both epitomize that.
