Aramis Ramirez Wins Chicago-style Election

Aramis Ramirez received two pleasant surprises this week.  First, he found out there's something called The Hank Aaron Award.  Then he found out that he'd won it! Yes, fans, The Hank Aaron Award, an all but secret honor which goes to "the best offensive performer" in each league has gone to Cub third baseman Aramis Ramirez.  Well done, sir.  Or should I say, "Well done, Cub fans."  Because, like Fukudome's election to the NL All-Star team, the Aaron Award goes to the player who gets the most fan votes.  And anytime you open up voting to the fans, Cubdom, no doubt used to the Chicago mantra of "vote early and often" will come out in droves.

American League winner?  You betcha.  A member of Boston's Red Sox.  Kevin Youkilis to be exact.

So really what we have here are awards for the most loyal fans with a player's name attached.  Personally, I'm all for doing away with fan voting period.  it's silly, really. Not that there aren't injustices when the players and writers get the vote, but at least they each get only one vote.  I sat behind a pin-headed kid at a game last year who never even looked at the field.  He spent the entire seven innings he was there poking a pen through all the Cubs on the All-Star ballot.  He must have given them each 200 votes.

So enough with the meaningless honors from fans.  Although, before we do away with them completely I would like to nominate Neal Cotts for The Lefty Grove Award and DWard for the Babe Ruth Award.  Get those votes in!

This is written as somebody who doesn't know or deal with Cardinal fans

Voting or not, this award will have them up in arms for the whole offseason and now I have some nice anti-Pujols material.

Your 2008 Missouri Tigers! #15 5-2 (1-2). Next up CU. Jeremy Maclin can still win the Heisman.

I know and deal with Cardinal fans.

But being able to wave The Hank Aaron Award or Tommy Aaron Award or Aaron Boone Award in their faces is a pitiful substitute for actual success. Until we can wave a couple of World Series championships in their faces… well, you get where I’m going. But if you like, keep voting for these things. It would be a real feather in our caps if a Cub won the Aaron Miles Award. :)

well done

:) The Aaron Miles Award carries a lot of prestige.

Or we could jazz it up and win, say, a Miles Davis award.

Things I care more about than the feelings of Cardinal fans

1) Ralph Nader

2) What the Palins are going to name their next child — Zamboni!

3) The lint in my navel

4) The crop futures of yams

5) Whether or not Lou Pinella had a good poop this morning

The worst beer I had was pretty good.

but why yams specifically?

I tend to worry about all subterranean food sources equally.

It's a good thing this wasn't "best offensive playoff performer"...

as ramirez would never place in such a category…only nonCubs would be candidates for such an honor.

If someone had asked me what I thought about the Cubs execution in the playoffs, I would

have to say “I’m all for it.” I stole that from the late John McKay.

Despite

Despite some very stupid people wanting the Cubs to trade him Ramirez is the most consistent offensive player on the Cubs.

Thngs of worth are worth fighting for regardless of the odds.
