World Series Game #5: Rays vs. Phillies, Monday 10/27, 7:30 CT

If the World Series should end tonight -- and with Cole Hamels going for the Phillies, the home team should be favored -- it will, despite having a couple of close and well-played games, go down in history as yet another one-sided series with little drama. The teams get my thanks tonight for going with the same pitching matchup as in Game #1, saving me the trouble of retyping.

Oh, wow. I'm first and I don't care.

I just wish we had Upton and Rollins.

I cannot stand baseball in cold weather.

I remember my first game on the JV team in high school. I was playing third, and living in Minnesota, it is still damn cold out when baseball season starts. We all had turtlenecks, hats, football warmers around our waists, etc. to keep warm. I got a liner right at me and it hit the soft spot in my glove…it hurt so much because of the cold I whipped my hand (throwing the glove and ball)…and my short stop barehanded the ball and threw the guy out. I looked like an idiot, but damnit, my hand was frozen with pain.

This is nasty for the umpires.

The weather is really unplayable, but the last thing they want to do is have the Phils win 2-1 with a game shortened by rain — especially the clincher.

Good for the Rays!

Hey, it's a new century!

by cowsarecool220 on Oct 27, 2008 9:38 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Think about their choices now...

1. Rays don’t score now. Put tarp on field, can’t resume. Phils win WS while sitting in clubhouse.

2. Rays tie score. Phils don’t score in bottom of 6th. Suspended game. Do you continue tomorrow using the same tickets as tonight? Go to TB, play last threes innings, Phils win, game 6 never happens, and refund the tickets?

3. If the Rays take the lead and the Phils don’t tie in the bottom of the 6th, they can put the tarp on, call it a game, and get the ticket revenue from game 6.

No-win situation. They should have stopped the game in the 4th.

I would guess if the game is suspended

it would be finished in Philly tomorrow and if the Rays win, game 6 would be in St. Pete on Wednesday. I would guess they would treat it just like if tonight was rained out and honor the tickets for game 5.

Of course that would be the logical thing to do and this IS MLB so who knows!

Hey, it's a new century!

by cowsarecool220 on Oct 27, 2008 9:42 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That was my point

they should have done something when there would still have been viable options. Now just about anything that happens is going to have someone crying in their beer that is wasn’t fair to their team. They are now already on the literal slippery slope.

Ohio State was the defending national champions, had not lost a game in over a year and a half (I think 19-0), and Wisco beat them with a 80 yard TD catch by Lee Evans with five minutes left in the game. I’m in the back, looking like I’m 20, cuz I was. The guy is was roommate, his sister, a friend, and my girlfriend at the time (clockwise).

It is mentioned in Aristotle's treatise: The Nature of Baseball

“The Spartans did have many occasions when weather would affect the ability of the players to demonstrate their prowess to the satisfaction of the spectators who would then in unison yell "Boooo” which was a bastardization of an arcaic Catalan word “boose” which meant “get outtahere now”." In those occasions a yearling cow would be sacrificed and based on the shape and color of the entrails either the game would be suspended to be replayed on the next equinox or all the players would be sacrificed and all records of the game would be stricken from the official records.

But he would be the entity to announce the decision

Tommie Agee was out.

In the regular season, there is a minimum waiting time, which I think is 90 minutes

for the first delay and 45 minutes for any subsequent delay. There is no maximum; it is at the sole discretion of the crew chief.

In the WS, it is probably Bud’s (or Bob DuPuy’s) decision.

According to the interview with Bob DuPuy,

1. The game is currently in a rain delay.
2. If they are unable to resume tonight, the game will become a suspended game.
3. The ideal situation would be to finish the game tomorrow (have no idea about tickets), but the weather forecast is worse for tomorrow.
4. If they can’t play tomorrow, they will play Wed. He did not say whether that would be in Philly or TB, or what would happen to game 6. My guess is that there is no official rule, and that the commissioner will wing it.

The Cubs won last year with this rule.

They were down to the Pirates, scored to go ahead, the game was suspended, and they held on to win the next day. With the old rules they would have lost, with a revert to the last official, full inning.

I can remember playing in some rain, but not this much.

There was a WS in which game 7 was rained out (before starting) twice. With the old fields, they wouldn’t have even tried to continue after the third or fourth inning.

Apparently, they were hoping that they could play through because tomorrow’s forecast is worse.

I’m just glad that the Phils won’t win by rain-out even though I’m rooting for the Phils. I want to see a celebration on the field.

Here's what I found out, too...

…under the old rules, tonight’s game would have been won by the Phills, because it would have reverted back to the last complete inning, when the Phills were up 2-1. Now, however, the new rules essentially eliminate ties and “official” games from not being completed. So tonight’s game, if the rain delay does not end, becomes suspended, picking up exactly where it left off, until its completion.

I don't see how this wouldn't be an advantage for the Rays

If this is suspended, they (probably, I’m sure) don’t have to worry about Hamels pitching anymore, except for maybe Game 7— if there is one. He might have been getting a little tired, but still; rather 6 innings from Cole hamels than 7-9 innings from Cole Hamels.

Their rankings are basically informed power rankings of the best of the best. I also like the Calvacade of Whimsy, which is very funny, and then the bowl predictions.

MLB needs to shorten the season back to 154 games...

This is getting ridiculous. Every spring a dozen teams start the year playing with snow mounds on the field. And now the playoffs extend to the beginning of friggin November. LOOK at those weather conditions in Philly. Imagine if the World Series were being played at Wrigley tonight. I just checked out the window and it’s snowing !!!

Shorten the season Bud. You and your greedy bastard owners can make up the lost dough somewhere else.

Yep

It took Minnesota many years to get a new ballpark. As I understand it the park is being built to more modest specs, ala Heinz Field in Pittsburgh. The issue of a retractable roof was shot down very early on because it would have made the overall project cost way more than what there was a willingness to shell out. Of course that decision will come back to bite the Twins in the ass. But the real issue is that this is yet another case of crisis in leadership by Bud the Dud Selig. It’s INSANE to be playing baseball games from March 31st to November 1st. Shorten the regular season 8 games. Also, shove more twi-light doubleheaders on the schedule. That way the teams get two gate receipts for the twi-lighters and we can shave a couple extra days off the calendar.

Too Much Greed

Going back to the 154-game schedule would be a great idea, but the owners would lose 4 home games each during the regular season. They are way too greedy to give up that revenue. How about starting these World Series games at 7:35 PM EASTERN, not central? How much TV revenue is gotten from individual episodes of 7:30 PM eastern shows syndicated shows like Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, Entertainment Tonight, and EXTRA?

At the very least, schedule these games to start no later than 8:05 PM eastern, if the local affiliates really must get their revenue from the game shows and entertainment news shows that lead into prime time? Both of these World Series teams are in the eastern time zone. I don’t think their fans would complain about that.

Both teams were wronged.

The game should never have been started. For a possible clinching game, they shouldn’t have put themselves in the position where they might have to suspend — there’s no way they EVER would have called such a game short of nine innings.

Even if that meant waiting a couple of days for better weather, they should have waited.

Just wait till next year when we could be playing into November.

+1

I know no one can control the weather. The truth is the deeper into October and (yes, November) for next season you go, the better the chances are for inclement weather. I think MLB should consider itself fortunate that one of these teams play in St. Petersburg, Florida, with a domed stadium.

Why start something you know you can’t finish in all likelihood? Let’s say the game hadn’t been tied in the top of the sixth. The Phillies would have won the World Series in a rain-shortened game. That would have been terrible for the game. As it turned out, the Rays tied it, and we have a suspended game. That still isn’t good for baseball. To echo the sentiment, the game never should have started.

Bud's Presser....

1)The guy looks old…like nursing home old, tapioca pudding old. On top of that, he is a terrible public speaker and appeared to have a grumpy disposition through the whole thing. I am now convinced that he is a puppet ruler and that the owners are really running baseball. From appearance alone, I would not want this guy being the face of my company.

2)There was no real reason for him to have the umpires in the presser other than to take some of the heat off of him. His body language was as such since several times he looked at them when explaining the situation. Several times he had the appearance of trying to deflect attention off of him and put it on the umpires, the weather, etc.

3)I agree with his decision that he was not going to call the game even if the Phils were winning when the delay started. I don’t think that the Phillies wanted to win a WS that way. However, if you play devil’s adovacate, the potential does exist in the regular season for a called game to affect the post season (i.e. a team misses playoffs by one game, home field advantage by one game, division by one game but wins the wildcard, etc). So, I guess the luxury of having off days and no other teams involved but those playing allows one to bend the rules.

"Sports are a crazy business. If there was a template, we'd all be champions, right? But there's one winner and 29 or 30 losers; one guy wins, everybody else is tied for last. That's the way it works" -- Mark Cuban
