The Casey McGehee era officially ends in Chicago
Goodbye Casey, you'll... be missed?
The Brewers added a potentially intriguing piece to their third-base puzzle on Wednesday, claiming Casey McGehee off waivers from the Cubs.
McGehee, who turned 26 on Oct. 12 and is a right-handed hitter, batted .296 with 12 home runs and 92 RBIs for the Triple-A Iowa Cubs in 2008 but could not continue that success after a September callup. He hit .167 (4-for-24) in nine games with the Cubs, going 0-for-6 during the season-ending series against the Brewers in Milwaukee.

Wow, interesting.
Well, I guess Brewers fans can start mispronouncing his name now. Seemed like a decent guy, but I don’t believe this is a big loss.

Nashville Bound
I think McGehee will start the 2009 season at AAA Nashville. He could back at Principal Park in Des Moines as a visiting player next season.

You actually bought a Casey McGehee jersey, or am I missing the sarcasm?

I'm fairly certain you're missing the sarcasm...
I could be mistaken though.

I don't see it...
Doesn’t look like more than acquiring some organizational depth.

will we actually be lucky enough
for him to be a starter for the Suds?
that would be GREAT.

A key injury here or there...
It could happen! (Ahem, not that I’m wishing for that sort of thing, of course.)

It could happen

Bill Hall – couldn’t hit RHP last year
Craig Counsell – aged like Methuselah and has a contract option
Russell Branyan – free agent
Ryan ‘stone hands’ Braun

Roadblock
May become a decent bench player in the next few years, if not with Milwaukee, maybe somebody else. Cubs did a good job of developing him as a player and a chance to be a 3rd catcher. Casey did a nice job for the org and good luck to him.

Is this one of those things where he has to be on the major league team
for a certain period of time and we get him back or is he just gone? Not that it makes a big difference just wondering.

He's a goner!
He’s a goner! The part where you get him back is generally regarded as the Rule V draft which he would have been subjected to if the Brewers or someone else hadn’t claimed, which takes place about the 1st week of Dec.

Rule 5 players are acquired if they are NOT on a MLB 40 man roster.
Teams protect their minor league players by putting them on the 40 man MLB roster.
Players 18 or younger when they sign have 4 minor league years before they have to be put on the 40 man MLB roster to be protected, players 19 or older when signed have 3 years. (These are different than the option years that happen AFTER the player is put on the 40 man MLB roster.)
As Casey was a waiver claim, he will go on the Brewers 40 man roster. No matter what the Brewers do with him, he will not be returned to the Cubs as they claimed him for the waiver price ($25,000, I think.)
Casey has all of his minor league options so MLB rules do not require him to be on the 25 man MLB active roster.
Hey, it's a new century!

Bet Casey was snapped up by the Brewers
because he has all of his options left and gives them roster flexibility. He can play multiple positions so he’s a useful 40 man roster player to have in case of injury.
Hey, it's a new century!

That's a bit of a surprise...
Why would the Brewers want to waste a 40 man roster spot on a journeyman when they have several young prospects who are Rule V eligible?

Maybe they're preparing for a trade they might make
that will wipe out someof the depth in their minor league system.

Sigh...
Tough to get worked about Casey McGehee leaving. He has about as much major league future as did Scott Moore.
"Not that I don't feel like I'm part of the team, by no means, but when you get that nice celebration coming into the dugout and you're getting your ass hammered by guys, it's no better feeling than to have that done.'' -- Matt Stairs (aka The Professional Hitter)

Scott Moore had more of a future, to be honest
Due to having some pop in his bat, I think Moore had/has a better shot. Too bad Moore can’t learn to hit for the entire year (2nd straight year that he’s gotten off to a slow start). I still think Moore has a slim shot at a Scott Speizio type future.

I'm very disappointed...
Casey McGehee has 10 times as much potential as Josh Vitters does.

I took the day off to celebrate.
Smoking Cuban cigars and quaffing cute little mixed drinks with umbrellas in them. I could nearly cry in joy.
But I’m now stuck wondering what we needed space on the 40-man for, and I don’t have a good answer.

It just occured to me.
Why did the Cubs need to put McGehee on waivers?
by cwyers on Oct 29, 2008 8:54 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Does the post-August 1 waiver period go all the way through the end of the World Series?
If so, that might explain it.

I would assume...
… that they did so to clear a space on their 40-man roster. They probably wanted to keep him around but not on the 40-man roster, so he had to clear waivers.

But the article says he was CLAIMED.
Which means he did NOT “clear” waivers.

We'll find out when they add the minor league players soon.
I assume they decided which players to add during their organizational meetings last week and needed to clear a roster spot.
Hey, it's a new century!

ya...
Cubs probably put a few guys on within the last week or so. The Cubs probably are looking to get a few guys off the 40-man roster to either have space open and get guys onto the 40-man roster and protect them for the Rule 5 Draft. I forget how long it takes a player to clear waivers but once this happens the Cubs then likely would have attempted to send him to AAA.
Ya, I know that he didn’t clear waivers but the Cubs needed to do this in order to clear the spot on the 40-man roster while keeping him in the organization.
Perhaps i’m not seeing what the big confusion is.
by dmlichte on Oct 29, 2008 10:40 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
He had his shot...
McGehee had a good season at AAA, the Cubs gave him the cursory call up. Then they let him go. He is an organizational guy, nothing more.
The saddest part about this is the fact that for the next five months, this is the sort of stuff we are going to be talking about.
