World Series Game #5 (Continued), Rays vs. Phillies, Wednesday 10/29, 7:35 CT

While some commentators bemoan what happened the other night, and another suggested moving the resumption to Wrigley Field, personally, I think this is something that will increase interest in the World Series, especially if the Rays come back and win. It's likely a unique event -- may never happen again -- and is now part of baseball lore and history, like the earthquake-delayed 1989 World Series.

I'm not putting a pitcher box here because -- well, there aren't really any "starting" pitchers, and who knows, the two managers could change their minds before the first pitch ... of the bottom of the sixth is thrown.

I'm rooting for the Rays...

But I fear we may have to use a tactical nuke on Philly to subdue the fans if the Phillies lose now…

The worst beer I had was pretty good.

Fun facts,

The national anthem will NOT be sung before the game is resumed, God Bless America will be sung.

Take me out to the Ballgame WILL be sung during the stretch.

Beer will be sold during the first 7 innings PLAYED today, not after the 7th inning. (Translation, beer will be sold though the 13th inning).

Hey, it's a new century!

I'm glad we cleared up that beer thing.

Big selling point.

At least for me.

Time for the Rays' dream to die tonight...

The Phillies will it all tonight. This series isn’t going back to St. Pete.

Hmmm.....

Jenkins is a LHB with power. He can play RF. He is only 6 months older than DeRo. Is he finished, or might he have something left in the tank? I don’t think that he would be plan A, but he might be available cheap as plan C or D.

DeRos has been improved his game over the last few years,

Jenkin’s game has regressed.

I agree.

However, it seems weird that one guy seems old and the other seems to be in his prime and they are only six months apart in age.

I’m still trying to figure that out.

I like to use statistics to argue things...

…but I do not know why I am more scared of the Phillies offense than I am the Cubbies.

The Cubs were first or second in R, H, BB, AVG, OBP, and SLG

The Phillies were second in R and SLG, but first in HR

Are homers really that more intimidating? Our offense was significantly better in most every category sans the last two (and scored 56 more runs in 1 less game), yet I’m still more afraid of the Phillies, top to bottom, than I am the Cubs. Argh.

How do you compare CBP with the two yards that are collectively known as Wrigley Field?

CBP is a pretty small yard; that would explain the HRs. How did the Cubs beat them in SLG?

R

Wrigley: 1.068 (#8)
CBP: 1.029 (#15)

HR

Wrigley: 1.163 (#7)
CBP: 1.022 (#11)

Wrigley is a bit more run and home run-inducing, but the Phillies hit more dongs.

Whoda thunk it?

I would never have guessed that Wrigley would have coughed up more dingers than CBP, especially since the Cubs have a good pitching staff.

to look at the clock and see that it’s 8:30pm CST and then look at the TV and see that a World Series game is in the 8th inning

Hush!

Don’t go giving Bud any ideas. He might realize that he can split each game over two days, stuff more commercials into each broadcast, stretch the post-season all the way to Thanksgiving, and then stand up and proclaim himself the saviour of baseball (yet again) because now kids can watch baseball games and still go to bed at a reasonable hour.

Well I feel a bit sorry for Philly and their fans...

…what a less-than-ideal way to go out and win it. 40+ hours later.

For those that say this series was booooring, 4 of the five games were decided by a collective 5 runs. Glad to see the young Devil Rays get to the series (instead of the Yanks, Angels, or Red/White Sox), but the Phillies seemed destined to win it this year. Cheers.

I wonder...were the Phillies really that good?

I mean Werth might not be as good as Sori (?), and Victoriono might not be as good as Johnson/Edmonds, and DeRo might be just as good as Burrel. Does it all fall on the shortstop (Theriot vs. Rollins?)

It ain't as simple...

…as going position by position, and it never is.

The Phillies had a great lineup and I was very impressed with how they could scrape up runs when the big guys went cold. Also, they constantly pressured Tampa pitchers on the bases, which is something the Cubs need to be able to do.

The Phils have a very good club, and most of all, they wanted it.

Recent Short World Series

This is the fifth World Series in a row that did not go more than 5 games. That’s the first time ever we have had five World Series in a row that short.

Since 1997...

… when the Marlins/Indians series went 7 games (and to the last of the 9th), the WS have been the following lengths:

1998: 4
1999: 4
2000: 5
2001: 7
2002: 7
2003: 6
2004: 4
2005: 4
2006: 5
2007: 4
2008: 5

Not very encouraging. Five sweeps and three more five-game series in 11 years? No wonder fewer people are watching.

1913-1916

That’s the only time I can see before this recent stretch that we even had four World Series in a row that did not go more than 5 games. During those years, we had 3 five-game series and 1 four-game sweep.
