Around SBN: Steve McNair Dead - Former NFL QB Shot and Killed

I apologized to my kids this morning.

I've been a Cub fan since the late 70s. I'm 41 years old. And when I woke up this morning, I looked at my daughter, 11, and my son, 7 and said I was sorry. They've followed me into Cub fandom. And they believe. They bring a childlike enthusiasm to being a fan I wish most of us could have. But we have 69, 84, 89, 98 and 03 in the back of our minds and they don't.

I told them they can root for any team they want, I don't care. Take the Cardinals, Brewers, whatever. But you don't have to follow me down.

They said they would still root for the Cubs and told me it wasn't over. It's hard to accept, but coming from them it felt real. Like maybe it wasn't over. We certainly have the players and the pitching to win three in a row. We've done it countless times during the season, haven't we?

So if you're down like I am, talk to your kids, if you have kids. I would give just about anything for their experience as Cubs fans to be joyful and successful. There is no reason why it can't be.

By my count they won at least 3 in a row 15 times this year.

That doesn’t count multiple 3 game streaks within a larger streak. For example you could count 4 three game streaks within a six game streak. Wins 1-3, 2-4, etc.

It’s all I have.

I have twin boys

12 years old now who have followed me into sorrowful Cubdom and I feel exactly the same way. I feel pretty good about the job I do as a parent but man…………turning those boys into Cub fans is setting them up for a lifetime of sports misery! In 04………I watched one of my sons (then 8) hang on to hope in game 7 only to end that night in tears as the final out was made (like most here my tears had already turned to resentment and anger!) It’s a lasting memory I just don’t want to see repeated.

Woa Woa Woa

You guys are making huge mistakes here, your kids being Cardinal or Brewers fan? Whatever happens throughout the rest of these playoffs, in March if you guys re-read your comments, you’ll probably throw up in your mouth.

Lets do it Cubbies

My son had to wear something to school today with a team logo on it. He asked

me if he could wear my Cub cap. I feel bad that he has to go to school today smelling like garbage.

I understand what you all are saying

I am 19 so fairly young. My dad raised me as a cubs fan. I have already dealt through quite a bit of disappointment but not as much of some of you older. Even throughout all the disappointment I couldn’t be happier that he led me to be a Cubs fan and not a White Sox fan. Yeah so the Cubs have never won a WS in my lifetime and the Sox have, but all the great memories, games, and traditions. Its rough right now but that is what comes with being a sports fan of anytime. Your heart gets broken. You live through those ups and downs and that is what makes you love your team even more.

Keep faith everybody. This series aint over. If the Dodgers can win two on the road why can’t the Cubs?

also

come on people, you know when the Cubs finally do win a world series its not going to be easy to get there. This is the Cubs we are talking about. Look at Boston a few years back. It wasnt easy but they did it. Now why cant we to end our curse? Hell we have even seem a team win 3 straight on us in 03 to win a series. So we all know damn well that this can happen

Wow ,

I remember those days

Glacier thanks for taking me back and letting me remember a big part of why I still love the Cubs at 51

If the world didn't suck we would all fall off.

I understand and empathize, completely.

My 11 years old son is a Yankees fan. I told him today to not even consider switching his allegiance, even though this has been a frustrating decade for that team. Watching the news from last night I think he understands.

The Cubs are an addiction. They pull you into living hell.

I empathize as well.

I have 4 kids. My two oldest boys are 12 and 10. Year after year it kills me to see them get their hearts broken and I feel directly responsible. My 6-year-old daughter couldn’t care less and my 8-week-old is clueless, but the other two live and die with the Cubs. I hope one day they’ll get the big payoff they deserve!

A Lesson in Patience

I too have kids, a son age 15 and a daughter age 13. They’ve followed my example as a devoted Cub fan. It is particularly difficult since we live in the middle of Cardinal country. But I would never encourage them to change loyalty to a team that is “more successful.” Patience and intestinal fortitude are the lessons to be learned — because life is not fair. Learn to deal with disappointment in life, and you’ll be a happier person. A person that can’t deal with disappointment is destined to be constantly mad and resentful.

Ya gotta love a team with a shortstop named TheRiot ...

You did the right thing

Hope for us is gone. We can never shake the fact that we are Cubs fans, but your children can be saved. But please, no Cardinal or White Sox fans…………

Cubs Win!! Cubs Win!

Buster Olney said a few days ago that the Braves would entertain offers for their 26 year old shortstop (who makes 450k) Yunel Escobar. He is a plus bat, a solid defender, and would move Theriot to his more appropriate position at second.

They are looking for a bat in return. Apparently Cox doesn't like the guy.

I couldn't even speculate what we'd have to send them in return, but I think he would be a good fit given his low salary, his productive bat, his position, and his age. I don't care if he's a jerk if he makes the team win more.

What would it take?
