Shame On Cubs Fans

I don’t want to hear it.

You want to renounce your team when it needs you the most than get out.  We don’t need you.

In years past, if our number 3 pitcher was going to be Marquis or Rich Hill like last year I would agree, this is looking bad.  But the argument could be made our pitcher with the best stuff and our pitcher who has been best in the last month are going Saturday and Sunday.

If you aren’t cool with this idea, screw you.  I know I may seem like a Pollyanna but was will be going against a sub .500 pitcher and Lowe on 3 days rest.  Anyone who doesn’t look at that as advantage Cubs is crazy.

Each game is independent of one another just like each season is independent of one another.  Nothing is guaranteed and nothing is certain but I will tell you this, the Cubs have the better pitchers going on Saturday and Sunday.

Win or Lose I am a Cubs fan.  I am not renouncing my fandom and I will not root for another team because they will never be my team.  This is my team and I will support them to the bitter end win or lose.

You look at some of the  World Champions in the last 10 years and it took a special moment or effort to get there, they don’t just walk to the Championship

2001 – Dback down one with in the bottom of the 9th against Mariano Rivera

2003 – Marlins down 3-1 to the Cubs

2004 – Redsox down 3-0 to the Yankees

2005 – White Sox were one out away from being down 2-0 to the Angels and with one lucky break went on to win it all.

As of a week ago this was a special team.

They are still that team; they just played the two worst games of the season.  If you are going to tell me I am wrong so be it but we don’t need it.  We are all upset and disappointed but I refuse to quit.

I REFUSE TO PUT MY DREAM AWAY

I'll always have been.

and always will be a Cubs fan!! I haven’t giving up on this team. last night hurt yes but you nailed when you said that the best 2 pitchers as of late are pitching the next 2 games. We win tomorrow and instantly the pressure is back on LA to win sunday and not come back to Wrigley next Tuesday. I have faith in this team until the last out of the year is recorded.

Believe...

Agreed.

Thank you for posting. This is how I feel.

Our team lets us down over and over and over and over and over again....

and I still want them to succeed…but they find ways to fail…the first game it was the starter and manager….the second game it was the entire infield…and manager. I’m only left with the anticipation of who on this team is going to forget how to play baseball on Saturday. I will always hope they win, and it seems as if they will always take my hope and eat it. I hope it gives them all gas.

As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

Completely Agree

Why give up before its over? We can still do this.

Man now this is what I was hoping to see...

…for AL’s morning recap.

Yea, we lost and looked TERRIBLE doing it, but this is a best of five and not the best of THREE, so lets not give up until the umps give the last fist pump.

Y’all that still believe : Keep on Keepin’ On!!!

Amen!

I’m sick of cubbie pathos and the negative feedback spiral that we all drown in. I mean the front office has some greek orthodox minister in the dugout before Game 1 sprinkling holy water?!?

Cubs’ fans are so emotionally schizoprenic – home field advantage my ass. You’ve got 42,000 lunatics with questionable self-esteem and zero-confidence. I mean the moment one thing happens, you can hear the collective “it’s-over” sigh from the crowd. That’s what I remember from the Bartman incident, is when Alou threw his glove on the ground and the whole crowd gave-up.

I’m as guilty as anyone, so I’m not getting all up on my high horse hear, but count me in…win or lose, I’m not going to buy into this crap, and we all owe it to the team to be a little more loyal and take the pressure off.

It’s a game – and the more fans, players, managers, front office folks start treating it that way the sooner we’ll end the drought. I mean you’d think last night that it was Carlos Zambran V The Russians in the Cuban Missile Crisis. Insane. What these guys have lacked is mental toughness and you don’t have to look far to see why home field advantage is a huge mental disadvantage.

Quit blowing up baseballs, talking about goats and sprinkling holy water. Play baseball and stop thinking about it too much.

Go Cubs!

LET PIE PLAY.....

Ummm we don't owe anything to this team , they owe it to us, they're the ones being paid millions to what ?

To play like they’re back in the sandlot!
Oh poor poor pitiful million dollar players can’t handle the stress of the playoffs, I say bulls!*t, be professionals and earn my loyalty and my applause.
Hey we’re all hurting, I’ve given this team 42 years of my life it’s about time they give something back.

Fat , drunk , and ,stupid is no way to go through life son.

by alabebo on Oct 3, 2008 11:54 AM CDT up reply actions

Are you paying them?

Quit wallowing in your Cubby grief. This series isn’t over. They don’t owe us a thing. They had a fantastic season, 2nd year in the postseason, and at least one more game. Disappointing, yes. Tragedy of epic proportions, no. We’re the ones who complain repeatedly about announcers talking about 100 years, black cats, and Bartman, and then we’re the first to wallow in all that when the team loses admittedly important games, and scream how they owe us. This team is not the 1969, 84, 99, 03, etc. etc.

by mlern on Oct 3, 2008 12:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Ummm......

Damn straight I’m paying them!

With every freakin’ ticket I buy; with each game I watch on TV that the sponsors shell out big bucks to play those annoying commercials; and the team licensed gear I buy each year….all that jack filters back to the club front office to help pay salaries……..

So yeah, I’m paying for all of it (we all are) each time we shell out a few bones for something “Cubs” related.

They owe me a return for my investment, or I have to right to choose not to invest in that particular enterprise. Business 101.

With this fiasco of a postseason (that it has turned into)….I don’t think I’m necessarily leaning towards the idea of just not following the Cubs anymore, I’m almost of the opinion to just say “screw baseball” in general. I will not ever be anything but a Cubs fan, so for me to try to follow the Sux, Brewers, or Cards….I just don’t think so…..I’ll probably just stick with America’s game. Football. There comes a time when even the most loyal have to wake up and realize that by continuing to put themselves in the position to be hurt again (over and over), that they are becoming an enabler. I, by being faithful, am enabling the Cubs to abuse me, year after year. Maybe if more people had this attitude, and quit shelling out all the caysh for tickets/gear/memorabilia each and every year, then just maybe the freakin’ team would have to go through some real change (because they would be loosing money) since the “cub faithful” refused to fill the ballpark 82 times a year, to watch a crappy team, play crappy baseball.

Sorry if my hurt feelings are showing me to be less than full of sunshine and daisies, but I just don’t see my attitude changing by April of next year. Enough is enough. My daughter is only 10, and I just don’t see that helping her to love this team like I do, is going to do anything but hinder her development. What, am I going to teach her “it’s OK to love a lost cause…”; yeah, like I need her going out and finding some deadbeat loser to fall for, only to tell me it’s OK dad, because he’s lovable to me, just like the Cubs were to you…There are other ways to help her develop character. It’s time for a break from this exercise in futility.

by Jimsil on Oct 3, 2008 2:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Really

So you buy a shirt or a cap which you wear, or you go to a ball game, and that gives you a financial stake in the team and they owe you beyond their division championship and winning 97 games and having a whole lot of fun this summer. You are right that you don’t have to invest, just like they don’t have to win to suit you. I have a 10 year old grandson who got the Cub gene, too. We are all here because we think baseball at Wrigley is special, win or lose. I firmly believe that. I want them to win, I’m sure they want to win. But the kind of attitude your showing here is the same ohmygodwe’recursedtheysuckthey’rekillingme blahblahblah. Chill. I know we’re all disappointed but some of the reaction on here is pretty extreme.

by mlern on Oct 3, 2008 4:22 PM CDT up reply actions

To each his own, Merl...To each his own.

I didn’t say it gave me a stake; it gives me the right to stand up and say this is bullshit!!! Even if someone like you doesn’t like me saying it, or necessarily agree with my POV. I have that right, and I am exercising it. By you accepting the mediocre performances, that is just the reason that the team continues to play at that level of under-achievement. Only when the team is required by the fan base to perform, will they start to improve. Tell Yankee fan now to just accept it, they had a good team in the past, now it’s somebody else’s turn; You’ll probably get your teeth knocked in. That fan base expects to win it all, every year. Yes, they are usually a bunch of assholes, but they win; “just win baby…”
We have the same debate right now here in Lafayette. Joe Tiller has done wonders for the Boiler football program. But, since they took that step from being the Big-10 doormat, to being a competitive squad, winning 7 games a year just isn’t good enough anymore. Did he turn the program around: HELL YEAH! But is that still good enough 8 years later, when we have been to a bowl game in all but 1 or 2 years, but yet still can’t beat a ranked team in the top 25? It just wont do anymore. That’s why Tiller quit.

You tell me that with the club spending over $100 million on Soriano alone, that as “just a fan” of the team, I’m not allowed to expect him to produce during the playoffs; again I say bullshit. That money comes from the $$$ spent by you and me. Yeah, I had a lot of fun this summer, but it’s pretty well been wasted down on the Wrigley infield in less than 5 hours, over the course of the last two nights. I am not proud of this team after their recent playoff performances; I am embarrassed by it. I’m done apologizing for being a fan of this team; I expect something more.

I agree with you; The Wrigley experience is amazing, and something that I wouldn’t trade for anything. AND, I would wish that every Cub fan get the opportunity to experience that sometime before they die. I am so glad that I could give that experience to my daughter. BUT, it’s the ohhit’sOKtobetheterminallosersyearafteryearafteryearblahblahhblahhh….crowd that accepts a lesser product on the field, and continues to accept those mediocre performances each year, who is just as culpable for the losing ways of the Cubs as the players are. Someone has to take a step in the right direction, or they will never find their way to the promised land on their own. We’ve waited 100 years, how much patience do you expect? You can bury your head in the sand, or plug your ears and scream: “la la la, not listening…” all you want; sometimes speaking the truth, (or what others are afraid to say), isn’t always the popular voice. I’m sorry Virginia, there is no Santa Claus.

by Jimsil on Oct 3, 2008 10:02 PM CDT up reply actions

But the thing is,

there’s still game 3 to play. All this wailing and gnashing of teeth is a little premature. OK, maybe I’m in the denial phase and you’re in the anger phase of grief. But I bet we both watch the game tonight and will be ecstatic if they win. It is still possible you know.

by mlern on Oct 4, 2008 8:07 AM CDT up reply actions

Maybe I am just an angry sort of guy??? Hot headed?

listen, I came off a little strong; and if I offended, I am truly sorry.
But that doesn’t change the facts here. This is the “complete team”. They have almost every role player covered, and for the most part, they all have done an exceptional job all year long. You can talk about Dome’s issues, Howry’s nightly meltdowns (a personal favorite bitch of mine), or Lee’s fade in production; but they still have had it going on, all season. To me, that just exacerbates things, considering the problems during the first two games.
The level of implosion that we’ve all been witness to during the first two games at Wrigley, is just about only comparable to past Cubs meltdowns. I usually won’t even talk about goats, black cats, 100 years, or any of that crap; and I am not going to consider trying it now. So, there has to be something that causes this type of repetitive futility. If it’s not curses, not lack of talent, lack of decent coaching, lack of spending good money to bring in good role players, lack of developing talent; what else is there left? In my mind, it’s got to be lack of mental toughness. IMHO, the only way to achieve this is by not being so accepting, as a fan base, when they tank in the playoffs.
It’s like when you are raising your children. All kids get teased at some point in grade school. The kids who handle it best, are the ones who get mentally tough, and decide that they aren’t going to let the pressure affect them. They ignore it, or walk away from the bully on the playground; sometimes they just pop the other kid in the mouth. The bully then decides that it isn’t worth it, so they go and find some other weaker kid, who isn’t necessarily going to deal with it so well, and starts to feed on the new, easier prey. The Cubs, I thought, had turned that corner. The swagger the team had through most of the season was an answer to childhood prayers. I’ve been at this less than most Cubs; this is my 34th season living and (mostly) dying by the Cubs. I am just needing to see a little more from the team.

I’m not “out on the ledge”; I was just considering leaving the building, so the urge to ride the elevator to the roof, and finding that ledge isn’t as easy an out, as it was beginning to look.

by Jimsil on Oct 4, 2008 9:50 AM CDT up reply actions

You're right.

You don’t owe anything to this team -

But, The Players, first, and the Cubs’ fans second needs to show a little more confidence and a little more mental toughness.

A bunch of Chicken Littles.

Show the people some heart and some good baseball and they’ll respond accordingly, play like you’ve been playing the last two days and you’ll get what you deserve.

I'm not throwing in the towel

As long as we have outs we are in this thing, have we learned nothing from this season? This team can still pull this off, I like many of you invented new swear words and new ways of punishing my liver last night but we have got to support our team. Lets win this damn thing and bring on the Phillies

by ryanbrixenivy on Oct 3, 2008 11:55 AM CDT reply actions

Let's take these in order....

2001 – Dbacks down one in the bottom of the 9th against Mariano Rivera
- At home.

2003 – Marlins down 3-1 to the Cubs
- Game 5 win at home gives them momentum.

2004 – Redsox down 3-0 to the Yankees
- Games 4 and 5 wins at home give them momentum

2005 – White Sox were one out away from being down 2-0 to the Angels and with one lucky break went on to win it all.
- Actually, the game was tied when Josh Paul “dropped” the third strike, so the Sox weren’t one out away from being down 2-0. And, the game was at home.

So in all of the instances you cite, the team with its back against the wall was at home, not going on the road after soiling the bed at home two nights in a row.

Negativity or Truth?

So speaking the truth and citing to facts is the same as being negative? Are you Karl Rove?

I am not throwing anything...

however, it looks as though it may be over. Let’s be honest here since you want to tell people who have lost hope “screw you”.

This team appears to be proving that the Cubs truly are destined to lose always. I don’t know why but 4 errors, 7 walks, 4 runs total. This team, at this juncture, totally sucks. I sincerely hope that they prove they are meant to win. I am not optomistic though.

Does this mean I am not a fan? No. Does it mean that I need to prepare myself for what may be to come tomorrow evening? Absolutely.

I'm 17, but a fan for 12 years now...

In those twelve years I’ve dealt with enough heartbreak to be used to it by now. Granted, I’m sure I haven’t witnessed as much as most of you, but still, I’ve seen it. This team won 97 games and has learned absolutely nothing from last season’s playoffs. Nothing. I actually think we’ve been outscored by the Dodgers more than the D’Backs in just two games. That’s really sad. If we don’t win this round (and that’s my best bet), the season is a failure. End of story. Why? Just a sad repeat of last season.

Am I renouncing myself as a Cubs fan? Hell no, I’ll be ready in 2009. Have I given up on the season? Pretty much, yes. What I saw the last two games was a miserable disaster. We didn’t walk eight guys in a game this season. We didn’t commit 3-4 errors in a game this season. But we did in the playoffs, when we simply CANNOT AFFORD IT! I think it’s over, and I’m really disappointed in this team…

Thats the spirit man!

I’m with you all the way. I have had my hopes and dreams shredded to pieces back in 1984, 1989, 1998, 2003 and 2007. I can handle it another year – especially if this is the time this slot machine finally pays off.

If I gave up now, I’d betray my hopes for the last 44 years…

I only hope the spirit of the real Champ Summers is going to LA tomorrow too.

Yes, the Cubs could show this video to their players today to inspire them for game 3, LMAO!

I know that you didn’t intend it to be used that way but I found some dark humor in it.
