Mark Derosa Blogs after Game 2

Not sure if this has been posted yet but there has been a ton of fan posts today.  Here is what Mark has to say.

"You've got to let this flow over you and consume you for a couple hours. You have to. "Z" was pitching a great game, he's feeling good, the double play gets turned, we go back into the dugout and the whole game is different. Our offense is able to relax and it's different.

But when you find yourself down 5-0, a team that has a 1-0 lead in the series, they're able to relax, Billingsley is able to pound the strike zone, their hitters are a lot more patient, a lot more calm. They're trying to have good at-bats and tack on runs. We're trying to press to get the score tied and take the lead. For me, this is terrible. I don't know -- I'll be up for awhile tonight."

Check out the time stamp on the post too. Must have been a late night.

I do feel for him though. One of his best season ever and he might only remember botching a double play.  Saturday is the time to make up for all of this. Let's go CUBS!

I can’t imagine he got a lot of sleep. Glad they decided to fly out this afternoon instead of right after the game.

yeah that would have been a rough flight

Although they might have been able to come together and get out all their frustrations on that flight and forget about the game by the time they landed. oh well.

agreed

I really hope someone on the team will be a voice to the rest of the players. who knows maybe someone already has. Something, anything needs to motivate this team

If going home and not getting a chance to play in

a World Series is not enough motivation for this team, then the whole team needs to be blown up.

Feel bad for him

he’s been one of my favourite Cubs this year. This one will sting him for quite a while, unless they manage a miracle.

Oddly, the only real memory I have of last year’s playoffs was his GIDP with the bases loaded, on a 3-1 count, down only two runs. It was a back breaker.

Oh well…what can you do?

Be miserable...

All day like me.

Its gotta be tough...

…on DeRosa, and I hope both he and his teamates can channel their dissappointment, into showing everyone that they are made of, and it not being what they showed so far.

Mark DeRosa is a good guy

but I’m not going to feel sorry for him. He gets paid $4m+ a year to play baseball. He’s supposed to be good and he’s supposed to field simple grounders.

This is only baseball though. It’s not like he should have to wear a scarlett letter but when all of this is over he’ll be left with 8 figures to console him. He’s the temp. We’re in this forever. We’ll be left with the thought of him booting a grounder. Him feeling bad means little to me.

Yeah, I mean, if we feel bad having watched the game...

…imagine being the guy who actually dropped the ground ball – in front of 40,000+ people and on national TV.

By the way, if you’re in the mood for a sick laugh, scroll down through the comments – some a-hole has posted a parody of “Go Cubs Go” called “Blow Cubs Blow.” Normally, something like this would piss me off, but I’m so sad and disappointed by last night’s game that I’m finding it rather funny at the moment. Hey, if you can’t laugh at yourself…

I'm open to a miracle.

by daver on Oct 3, 2008 3:00 PM CDT reply actions

Bottle up the disappointment

and use it as fuel these next three games. Just as the Cubs took the disappointment from 2007 and used it to push themselves throughout 2008, it needs to be done again, starting tomorrow.

Good to see DeRosa stand up, once again, and take responsibility.

I love you Mark.

One botched play didn’t lose two games. And DeRo has provided more offense than anybody else.

one of the big issues when you see this team on the field

is how tight they are

they say they don’t buy into the curse stuff but they’re playing like the weight of the city is on their shoulders.

Its become a self-fulfilling prophecy and I have no idea how to stop it unless you had a bunch of guys on your team that were completely oblivious. That seems to be how the Red Sox did it

by DartmouthCubsFan on Oct 3, 2008 3:57 PM CDT reply actions

Well said.

I received an email from another reader of this site saying essentially the same thing.

Basically, what they have to do is say, “F it” and go out there with that attitude.

by Al Yellon on Oct 3, 2008 4:02 PM CDT up reply actions

as much as people love to bash prior

that’s the attitude he had in 2003 and wood had the same thing, same can be said for Kenny Lofton. Its one of the reasons that season was so close.

If only Mark hadn’t run out of gas…

by DartmouthCubsFan on Oct 3, 2008 4:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Lofton was a gamer...

…and he thrived on playoff baseball and it is invaluable to have a guy like that setting the table when you are facing good pitchers.

If Prior had REALLY had that attitude...

… he wouldn’t have blown up after you-know-what happened.

blown up????

he got a DP ball that should’ve ended the inning AND he was over 110 pitches

did Carlos blow up last night? or did his defense let him down?

by DartmouthCubsFan on Oct 3, 2008 4:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Point taken.

by Al Yellon on Oct 3, 2008 4:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Exactly...

…thats what I tried to point out before with the Red Sox and the hump they got over, was more difficult (IMO) than what the Cubs have.

The one player they have with a reputation of keeping everyone loose in the clubhouse is Dempster, and what he did in game one doesn’t exactly help. I know these things can turn quickly and a game 3 win would put the pressure back on the Dodgers, but I have to be honest with my objective side and say everything I have seen says this team is dead in the water and game 3 will be the last one.

I basically said the same

thing earlier in the day. Its the pressure that they just cannot handle.

De Rosa is a terrific, stand-up cat.

Its just that the baseball gods have abandoned him at crucial times in his career (last year’s double play, last night, and a key error for the Braves in a Playoff game).

How gracious of Mark Derosa

to post something on his blog for the fans after last night. I felt so bad reading some of the comments on there that are similar to some of the comments on these posts. I was so glad Z got a standing ovation last night. It’s been a hell of season and they are a hell of a team. They are not responsible for our 5 or 40 or 100 years of disappointment.

by mlern on Oct 3, 2008 4:30 PM CDT reply actions

He's a class act.

And he was money all year long.

I just hope he can forgive himself.

Sometimes even hope isn't enough...

by halfblindcubbiegirl on Oct 3, 2008 5:05 PM CDT reply actions

He couldn't last year...

And that’s a shame, because his numbers from both this postseason and last are far and away better than ANYONE on this offense. He’s coming through more than anyone, yet he’s also getting the most flack. “DeRosa should’ve made that play,” “He started the whole damn thing,” or my favorite from last year “DeRosa stranded the bases loaded, how can you excuse that?”

I can excuse it because the guy has been a monster in his first two seasons here and he’s become my favorite Cub, hands down. Not only that, we’ve scored five runs this series and he drove in four of them. Cancels out the defensive flub I think, at least he’s trying out there. The other guys have been so careless it’s questionable whether or not they’re giving 100%.

He’s proven why he’s our most valuable asset, despite what people may think. I hope he doesn’t place the blame too much on himself because frankly, he’s not a one man team, and he’s doing more than anybody else right now this postseason (though if you ask me I’d say Edmonds has done alright, too).

by AeroZach on Oct 3, 2008 9:56 PM CDT up reply actions

DeRosa is a stand up guy...

…no doubt. Regarding your Edmonds comment, if they need a basehit to win the game tomorrow night, he is the guy I would like to see at the plate — at least right now.

that the Cubs need to sign to an extention, good player, just a quality stand up guy.

DeRo is under contract through next year.

But sure, I’d sign him to an extension.

A lefty version...

…of DeRosa (not just his numbers, but his attitude as well) in the outfield would do this team a world of good in the OF next year. Add a top flight SS to that mix and they would be in dandy shape.

Not forgetting this isn’t over, just thinking out loud.
