Congrats to the Phillies
I was surprised when I checked my favorite site at lunchtime nothing was posted about the Phillies winning it all last night. Don't call me a Phillies fan because I'm not. I'm a National League fan and I'm glad the world series winner came from the NL. If it wasn't the Cubs, at least someone in the NL won it.
Two thoughts that were going through my mind last night as I finished watching the game. First, it seemed like months ago my favorite team was beaten out. It just seemed forever ago I listened to Pat and Ron and watched games on TV. Second, what was Fox doing repeating over and over..... player by player.... running in to jump on the pile of Phillies? Ryan Howard jumping on your back was bad enough. But they showed each player over and over running in. Now I want to win the series as much as anyone here, but I just couldn't imagine the Cubs with this celebration. I hope it was just me, but I couldn't get that picture in my head.
The best moment was the interview with Jamie Moyer. He's been around longer, seen more, probably has more stories than anyone. Nice touch at the end of a "serviceable" career.
Did anyone else think the season is long past and any thought on the Phillies Pile?

Liked the pile
The way they went from player to player and showed thier reaction to the last pitch was great. IMHO it let us all see some of the little boy in all these professional ballplayers. That is a part of the sport that all to often we forget about as fans
If the world didn't suck we would all fall off.

I too enjoyed
seeing each player’s reaction as the last out was made. I do however worry about the players on the bottom of the pile. One of these days someone is going to get hurt.

I thought the same thing when the Rays clinched the ALCS.

Remember how worried we all were...
…when the AL won the All-Star game and clinched home field advantage? Guess it didn’t matter in any sense.

Special Congrats to Eyre, Moyer & Stairs
So much for the “ex Cubs curse”. He won’t do it but I would love it if Eyre puts his World Series ring on his middle finger , extends it in slightly curved manner, takes a photo and sends it to Lou. He was pitching poorly with the Cubs this year but he did not deserve to be treated the way he was and surprise surprise when used by a manager who clearly had faith in him as a very specialized situational lefty , he thrived.
My one regret watching the Phillies win was that Maddux turned them down twice this year because he wanted to stay West. What might have been ?

I think Grace and Gonzalez
exercised the ex Cubs Curse.

Did they use jumping jacks?

Skull Crushers
is what I hear…but I could be wrong.

I felt good for Moyer
At my age, I have to root for him at 45. The other one I felt good for was Geoff Jenkins. No Cub ties there but when he hit that double you could just see how psyched he was. He’s been around awhile and I’m sure he could sense how close it was at that point.
As for Maddux, it was his loss. I surely don’t feel sorry for him.

They played with an edge...
…and deserved to win.
They had some flaws, but their desire was what got them over the top. And, they did it in an environment (Philly fans and press), that is not exactly one that makes you relax.

Phillies Swept in the 2007 NLDS
like some other team I know. The Phillies played their best baseball in the postseason. That had to feel good after that NLDS against the Rockies last season.

I'll go out on a limb...
…and say their 07 failure, was motivation for them to go out and prove what they could do. For the Cubs, it didn’t work out that way.

But, perhaps, it could be used as motivation in 2009.
I hope.

One bad playoff performance...
…is one thing, but two “fall on your face” performances in a row is another. It would have been one thing to get beat in competitive games, but they stunk it up, both years.
They need some level of change to not only add needed parts, but to help shake things up a bit.
Could you imagine this same group winning the division again next year and going into the playoffs and what their attitude would be? I would think it would be more of what we have seen in 07 and 08, because it will be fresh in their minds. They need something to combat that, and that needs to come from the outside.

I'd agree
I was just playing devil’s advocate, to an extent.
However, I could see this team, if it were to stay intact, entering the 2009 playoffs with “screw it, we’re in it for ourselves” attitude, simply because it would be the opposite of the past 2 years.
I think some additions would help this happen much easier.

And,
one big break could open up the flood gates for the Cubs. I’ve been in sports my entire life and sometimes just one break going your way changes everything. It’s obvious we haven’t had our break in the last 6 playoff games. Just keep banging on the door, it’s bound to change.

Yep
If we wouldn’t have pissed off Dallas Green then the Cubs would have won at least one World Series by now.

I was full out cheering for the Rays
but after it was all said and done i was pretty happy for the Big 3 Infielders that really deserve it for Phily.

I wasn't exactly cheering for the Rays...
…but I was hoping they’d come out on top because, well, they’re the team I picked to win (in five games, IIRC). Naturally, I was wrong. So much for the Team of Destiny.

Happy for the Phillies, especially class act Jamie Moyer
I like that ballclub. Lots of no nonsense ballplayers who play the game the right way. Charlie Manuel also has been solidly vindicated having been labeled a bafoon by some in the past.
