And was easily the most talented cubs team of my lifetime. They are having some serious mental problems against the dodgers, who (btw) we wouldn’t be playing if we had beaten the Brewers.

This isn’t a “new owner” “front office” problem. Hendry has been great. This is pure mental stuff. It’s the hardest thing to fix and they just need a breakthrough moment to get through it.

They need to consider shortening the regular season if they do that

It’s already ridiculous to be playing baseball the last week of October. Of course this will never happen because of the revenue that would be lost.

A best of 7 series is more statistically significant than a best of 5 series....

and that can be proven mathematically. But the MLB is not interested in significance.

Not by that much.

If you’re really interested in figuring out which team is the best, you don’t need a playoff at all – you have the regular season results already. The whole allure of the playoffs is how short the series are.

by cwyers on Oct 4, 2008 10:45 PM CDT up reply actions

A short series isn't significantly more luck-based than a long one.

Really, a team that drops the first three in a best of five is probably going to lose a best of seven, as well.
