I have just returned from the future...
FEAR NOT – the Cubs will be scoring some runs shortly!

NO!
you don’t understand, by bring back that information from the future, you have altered the timeline into one where the Cubs will never score a run again.
Get to the Delorean, we have to go back to 2003 when the Back to the Future reference that led Bartman to go to the 6th game of the NLCS occurred, and restore the proper timeline!

So DeLee works the count to 2-1
and he’s sitting dead red. So why did he TAKE the fastball right down the middle on 2-1 and then swing at a ball off the plate for strike 3?

I'm getting physically sick.
In one week, two Badger losses, both to teams I completely and wholly hate, and now 12 outs from yet another playoff sweep.

Wouldn't that be something if the Cubs lose on a shutout
But the way Kuroda is pitching. Looks like Derrek Lowe out there with that sinker and slider.

I think Harden's out-pitching him,
but baseball’s a game of luck as much as of skill. Flip three coins, sometimes they’ll all turn up tails.

The dude is obviously hurt...
…he hasn’t had his good live fastball for about 5-6 weeks. The guy can be dominating, but it looks like you have another Mark Prior type on your hands that won’t be reliable for any period of time.

This is
the best Cubs team that I have ever seen. I spent every day following this team one way or another, and I am greatful for every thrilling moment they have gave me this summer. 2008 was a magical season that I won’t soon forget. Win or lose, I am going to sit right here and watch the rest of this season. Who’s with me?

at this rate, the Cubs will the be the NLDS version of the Buffalo Bills

Depends on your definition, I guess.
I think “best” means “most skilled at baseball and most capable of success” while you might believe “best” to mean “most successful.” Since success in the postseason is largely luck, those aren’t the same.
I would say the 2004 Cards were better than the 2006 Cards, for instance.

to be with this team since spring training, following their every move, just to lose 3 games to a team that barely won its division.

The Twins would need plenty of cash, too. They aren't the type to spend $13M on one player.
Rather, they’d throw $4 million at four separate terrible veterans.

He goes into a funk if he's placed anywhere else
There’s no sound-baseball reason for him to hit leadoff. We all know that. You want an OBP guy batting first. All those HRs are great but when the bases are empty it’s not making the best use of that asset.
by ChipSet on Oct 4, 2008 11:03 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
He goes into funks all the time.
He’s streaky. It’s Lou’s fault for not having it in him to ride out one of those funks, not Soriano’s fault for being streaky.

I don't really think we have enough of a sample size to suggest that he can't do it
They tried last year and gave up because the whole team was struggling when they tried it.
The fact that they were after BROB tells you that they don’t really want him there…

This is way bigger than Dome or Demp or Z or DeRo/Lee/Rami/errors. This is obviously a team that is not mentally prepared for the playoffs. Why? Not sure.
My guess is they are rusty and playing under a lot of pressure…generally someone needs to step up and make something happen in that instance. Hasn’t happened yet. Hence where we are.

We lost games in the regular season.
Did it mean we weren’t mentally prepared for those?
In the playoffs, normally two good teams face off, and one of them wins. It’s a coin flip either way.

The Cubs had bad stretches during the season.
A short losing streak – 3, 5, 10 games – doesn’t tell you a whole lot about a team. We played horribly in the first series against the Brewers. Were we not mentally prepared for the season? Or was it just chance?
by cwyers on Oct 4, 2008 11:07 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Honestly? I don't know.
But I don’t think this is a crap shoot. The way they ALL are playing right now is not the way a 97 win team plays. Demp walked WAY too many, the errors game two were ridiculous and this is like Wha???? Are you listening to Pat and Ron? They are trying to keep themselves from conceding defeat as well. I think that mental preparedness is a better arg than “crap shoot” particularly when I see people like Lee and Rami making errors. But that’s just me.

We scored tons of runs during the year, the playoffs nothing to speak of. At a certain point, it’s all on the hitters. They have proven they can hit, they just haven proven they can hit in the playoffs.

If you think...
…the coaches are telling them how to approach these pitchers, you are sadly mistaken. They can tell them all they want, but the player has to execute it.
This team did not show up for the playoffs (for 2 straight years) for whatever reason, and that should be a huge concern to both Hendry and Piniella.

So how do we go about fixing it for next year?
We need a power bat in right-then shift Fuki to center and bat him 8th.
I’d love to pick up a genuine lead-off hitter ( iknow it’s easier said than done)-that could have a ripple effect on the rest of the order (causing Lou to have to move Soriano and Lee)

My take is that some of it is bad luck, the team has lumped the past 4-6 weeks, and some is just the design
of the team. We have some older guys who may have been worn down just because they are older and their skills are declining. We have some arms that have been ridden hard and the season take its toll.

no not surprising........
Lou asked him before game two if he was ready, and Reed said, “I’m ready to drive the ball the other way and make the pitcher work deep into the count!” Lou said WTF are you talking about?

By the shore’s of old Lake Michigan
Where the “hawk wind” blows so cold
An old Cub fan lay dying
In his midnight hour that tolled
Round his bed, his friends had all gathered
They knew his time was short
And on his head they put this bright blue cap
From his all-time favorite sport
He told them, “Its late and its getting dark in here”
And I know its time to go
But before I leave the line-up
Boys, there’s just one thing I’d like to know
Do they still play the blues in Chicago
When baseball season rolls around
When the snow melts away,
Do the Cubbies still play
In their ivy-covered burial ground
When I was a boy they were my pride and joy
But now they only bring fatigue
To the home of the brave
The land of the free
And the doormat of the National League
Told his friends “You know the law of averages says:
Anything will happen that can”
That’s what it says
“But the last time the Cubs won a National League pennant
Was the year we dropped the bomb on Japan”
The Cubs made me a criminal
Sent me down a wayward path
They stole my youth from me
(that’s the truth)
I’d forsake my teachers
To go sit in the bleachers
In flagrant truancy
and then one thing led to another
and soon I’d discovered alcohol, gambling, dope
football, hockey, lacrosse, tennis
But what do you expect,
When you raise up a young boy’s hopes
And then just crush ’em like so many paper beer cups.
Year after year after year
after year, after year, after year, after year, after year
‘Til those hopes are just so much popcorn
for the pigeons beneath the ’L’ tracks to eat
He said, “You know I’ll never see Wrigley Field, anymore before my eternal rest
So if you have your pencils and your score cards ready,
and I’ll read you my last request
He said, "Give me a double header funeral in Wrigley Field
On some sunny weekend day (no lights)
Have the organ play the "National Anthem”
and then a little ‘na, na, na, na, hey hey, hey, Goodbye’
Make six bullpen pitchers, carry my coffin
and six ground keepers clear my path
Have the umpires bark me out at every base
In all their holy wrath
Its a beautiful day for a funeral, Hey Ernie lets play two!
Somebody go get Jack Brickhouse to come back,
and conduct just one more interview
Have the Cubbies run right out into the middle of the field,
Have Keith Moreland drop a routine fly
Give everybody two bags of peanuts and a frosty malt
And I’ll be ready to die
Build a big fire on home plate out of your Louisville Sluggers baseball bats,
And toss my coffin in
Let my ashes blow in a beautiful snow
From the prevailing 30 mile an hour southwest wind
When my last remains go flying over the left-field wall
Will bid the bleacher bums ad?eu
And I will come to my final resting place, out on Waveland Avenue
The dying man’s friends told him to cut it out
They said stop it that’s an awful shame
He whispered, “Don’t Cry, we’ll meet by and by near the Heavenly Hall of Fame
He said, "I’ve got season’s tickets to watch the Angels now,
So its just what I’m going to do
He said, "but you the living, you’re stuck here with the Cubs,
So its me that feels sorry for you!”
And he said, “Ahh Play, play that lonesome losers tune,
That’s the one I like the best”
And he closed his eyes, and slipped away
What we got is the Dying Cub Fan’s Last Request
And here it is
Do they still play the blues in Chicago
When baseball season rolls around
When the snow melts away,
Do the Cubbies still play
In their ivy-covered burial ground
When I was a boy they were my pride and joy
But now they only bring fatigue
To the home of the brave
The land of the free
And the doormat of the National League
