"Bring On The Major Leagues" Stephen Malkmus
by graceunderpressure on Oct 4, 2008 11:37 PM CDT up reply actions
Yes, unfairly
Almost every one of these players has helped us win at some point in the season. Remember? That was one of the great things about this team.
Have some of the players sucked? Has there been a teamwide slump? Yes. But to say that a player who hasn’t played well in three f*cking games is worthless is stupid. I’m sorry, I’ve tried to avoid saying something like that, but it’s stupid.
is Derek Jeter a great player?
The answer is NO, but he has rocks and shows up when it counts. It is not just Ok anymore to get to the postseason. We need some heros on this team, not selfish one dimensional guys who lose their one dimension the moment the calender turns to October. I know it is just three games, but those three game are more important than lead off homers against the Pirates in June!!!!!!

No, he's not a great fielder
But this crap abou him being a leadoff hitter is absolute BS. A leadoff hitter is guaranteed to hit first once in a game. Once. I’d much rather have a good hitter getting a lot of at bats than not. If you could get lots of players with plus bats and plus gloves, you’d probably need a $300 million payroll. And, as the Yankees have shown, that doesn’t always win it either.
I agree completely.

What you're saying is totally unfounded in reality.
He’s had his good moments in the postseason, and he’s had his bad moments. On the average, he’s about as good as he is in the regular season.
The same is true for A-Rod.

by Dongfang Hong on Oct 4, 2008 11:46 PM CDT up reply actions
Okay, let's just trade for a lot of players who are good in the postseason
After all, the point is not to win more games during the season so you get into the playoffs. The point is to have players who come up big in the postseason and just hope and pray you somehow get there.
And Jeter isn’t great? Okay, you’ve shown your baseball IQ there.
Don't start and get smart now, I have a right to be frustrated
I’m just asking how you can’t see what Sori is. Go look at game threads from Aug and sept. I was warning everyone then that he’ll burn us. I’m not a genious, but this guy is not doing anyone on this organization favors.

And I'm saying I'd rather have a player who's good in the season
Than one who’s not good in the season (though your example was a horrible one) and “turns it on” in the postseason.
Because a roster with 25 of those players (who are largely mythical anyway) would be screwed in a divisional race.
I remember after i came out of game 6 in 2003

I can't look at him
without hearing Jim Memelo calling him, “Big Stinky Manny Ramierez”
The worst part will be
that I live in LA and have to hear idiot LA fans tell me how much the Cubs suck. Not that they did not in this series but it is really more the fact of the way the season goes…whoever is hot going into October usually makes it to the Series.
LA was hot. The Cub were in cruise control mode and believing all the hype that they were in the midst of a cake walk to the WS.
This hurts.
Teixeira in 2009.
I've lived in LA and most people don't talk baseball, so you don't have to worry about it.

Words could not explain...

I would pay to be a fly on the wall when Lou and Hendry discuss where this team came up short.

it's going to be...
…a slow burn, no doubt.
They need to make a statement this off season to the players much more than the fans. They don’t need wholesale changes but a couple big moves need to be made to shake things up, and most importantly, improve leadership from the player perspective.
"I don't like them fellas that drive in two runs but let in three" Casey Stengel
Tears.
Someone convince me that this wasn’t a waste of time.
Proud recipient of a hot dog shot from the Iowa Cubs hot dog gun.
i'll try
because of all the times they made us smile through april an september this year. winnning when down 9-1, Z’s no hitter. All those games. They show up for us 162 games every year and make our days just a little more bearable….aw man….now i’m crying
This wasn't a waste of time
You have to take the bad with the good.
The games mean something, and that’s why it hurts right now. But that’s why we were thrilled when Z pitched a no-hitter. That’s why we yelled our lungs out whenever Aramis showed some of his late-game flash. That’s why we applauded Edmonds’ great catches and cheered for Geo’s emergence as a rookie of the year candidate.
That’s why our hearts sank when Sabathia became a Brewer, and why they soared again when Harden became a Cub.
The pain makes us appreciate the joy.
The pain is all we have right now. But all this pain will make the joy so much sweeter when it comes.
With an end like this
how can any number of wins over six months of a regular season give you hope for the post season? It goes to show how the components of a successful world series team are substantially different from the components of a divisional or wild card winner. There is just such a drastically different mentality in terms of the type of quality of player you need, the depth of your staff, etc. Sad, just sad. Really really sad.
Great season, Cubs, -- sorry to see it end
Thanks to the team for an exciting season.
Next year, we need to a couple more players that shine in the playoffs. Not enough of those on this team. Or we need to figure out how to relax somehow. Anyway, it was great while it lasted.
Can't belive it's over

It's fitting that I'm in Chicago for the first time this year.
I drove up to Wrigleyville and walked around Waveland, Sheffield… stopped a Murphy’s for a brew, walked around for a while and said hi to the Harry and Ernie statues, sort of aimlessly then ended up at the Piano Man on Clark.
I drove back to my hotel and watched the end of the game. I’m here for business, but it’s terribly cruel that I’m in Chicago, overlooking the skyline from the 32nd floor of the Hyatt on Wacker just sort of numb.

Soto – Not as good as I expected, but he caught well
DeRo – Most of our offense, except for that crap AB tonight
Edmonds – Pretty good
Fukudome – Expected

Yes, seriously.
This team would have made the playoffs without him this season, and he’s MUCH more trouble than he is worth in October. Presses in every at-bat, never changes his approach, and is just a turd on the bench looking lost and distant. Not a player I’d EVER want on my team if I want a true winner, no matter his skill set.

Epic choke job
Swept out of the playoffs in the NLDS 2 years in a row.
This f**king sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This season was a waste. Every Cub said all that mattered was getting back to the playoffs and winning. And they didn’t do that.
I’m upset that they went down without a fight. I still can’t believe how tight they looked during the first 2 games at Wrigley. They didn’t look like a team that won 97 games during the regular season.
The worst part for me is dealing with the fact the Phillies are most likely going to still be playing. During the season, I would not believe that would be possible.
I’ll be back in the spring but I’m going to have a bitter taste on how this season ended. And it’s going to take me a long time to get over it.
Got nothing left to say
History tells me that’s probably a good time to sign off.
