Ron Santo in NY TIMES
Oh... poor Ronny....
In Cubs’ Luckless Lore, the Story of a Baseball Life
By JOHN BRANCH
CHICAGO — The feet that he famously clicked together are gone now, and his Cubs are on the verge of completing a century without a World Series victory.
But Ron Santo still feels that he is closing in on everything he wants. He can imagine a cure for the diabetes that forced his lower right leg to be amputated in 2001, and the lower left one in 2002. He can picture the championship that has eluded the Cubs since 1908. And he can hear the call that tells him, finally, that he is going to the Hall of Fame.

Thanks for the story of my personal hero, "This Old Cub", Ron Santo.....

Santo for HoF
For the whole package – on the field and in later life. He just plain cares about what he does, and baseball should hold someone with his passion and desire up as a role model.
My favorite Santo moment was in, I think, 2003, in September at a game in Pittsburgh or Cincy on a really cold night. Pat said something about the temperature, and Santo said something like, “Well, you know Patrick, when I came out to the park tonight I was certain of one thing – I wouldn’t have cold feet.”
Hughes was dumbfounded for a minute, and then he just started laughing and told Ron he should never change.

As interesting of an article that it is...
I think it’s still a BCB no-no to post that much of an article on here, when you’re just supposed to put a link to it…. I could be wrong though.

True.
I’ll edit it to just be the link.

if the cubs can't turn this around
he’d at least better not be snubbed again. that would just be too devastating

But
But if they do lose to me it would take some of the sting away.
And if we do win it all and he does get in I may cry tears of joy as much as I will when we win it all.
Thngs of worth are worth fighting for regardless of the odds.

FWIW...
… in the article Santo talks about a day when he was having triple vision due to his diabetes and he came up and hit a grand slam off the Dodgers’ Bill Singer at Wrigley Field.
Often, players’ recollections of these events are wrong… not this time. Here’s the game Santo is likely talking about, from September 25, 1968. Not only did he hit a grand slam off Singer — it was a walkoff grand slam in the bottom of the 9th.
