Time to throw away 'IGH' banners & burn 'W' flags
As someone guilty of displaying the 'W' flag after most home wins, outside my home - I am to blame. This weekend, I plan to burn my 'W' flag.
For all of you who have the It's Gonna Happen banners and signs - throw them away, please - and don't display them at any more games.
We as fans, cannot continue to promote these things.
We - IMO - are the best fans in baseball. We need to act like it. Let's not embrace the 101 years since a World Series title. It is not something to be proud of.
I'm sure this post will offend some, but it is not meant to. It is just my opinion. I hope others share it, but understand if they don't.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation, Bleed Cubbie Blue, or Al Yellon, editor-in-chief. FanPost opinions are, however, valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

I see your point
But burning stuff doesn’t really seem like much of an answer. especially the W flag, which has alot more to do with a Wrigley tradition, than with the 100 years crap.

I say let's keep the W flags

I took down the two IGH signs in my window, along with the hunt for blue October stuck them in my closet.

I don't see what a W flag has to do with the 100-year thing.
It just means the team won. And I hope you fly your flag responsibly – that is, take it down after a Cubs loss. I have neighbors who fly theirs 24-7 throughout the season and it drives me nuts. Oh, wait, you’re burning your flag, so I guess it doesn’t matter how you flew it.
I don’t have a problem with people tossing the IGH signs. I never cared for those much anyway.
So this is how it ends.

I happen to like the W Flags…except when people display them all the time. They should only go out after a win and then be taken down before the next game.
“It’s gonna happen” on the other hand is ridiculous. What’s gonna happen?! Looks like the same old thing as always! Skip the signs. They just block other people’s view of the game anyway.
While we are at it…how about not singing “Go Cubs Go” after a win. We celebrate a normal season win like it’s some big deal. We should save it for something special. Or at the very least we should pick another song because singing “the Cubs are gonna win today” after they just won is really pretty silly.

I dont know if you were being sarcastic or what.. but why get rid of Go Cubs Go after we win a home game, should we not be excited our team just won? I happen to look forward to singing Go Cubs Go at Wrigley Field.

You can’t get rid of the song. I took a non-Cub fan to Wrigley a couple of years ago and he had never even heard the song before. He thought it was an awesome environment and the song is a huge part of it.

The W flag is a tradition,
and a cool one at that. It was neat to see the flags at Cubs games, home or away. It’s part of the “Wrigley Field North” or East, West, South concept that we have when the Cubs are on the road. We have to remember to control our emotions and actions in these troubling times.
by stadiumguru on Oct 6, 2008 1:41 PM CDT 0 recs
The W flag...
…has a long tradition and I have no problem with it. Regarding all the other “stuff” that comes out of the blue when they are having a good year, really makes me sick to my stomach.
Just watch the freaking game and forget about all this “side show” shit and act like the focus is what is happening on the field.

…it just shows that there are a lot of people who are really clueless about this game, who latch onto this team when it is “cool” to do so. These attention seekers are one part of being a Cub’s fan I don’t like.

Keep the "W"
It’s a tradition and should be treated as such. The IGH signs were an abomination and were utterly sickening. Gives us Cubs fans who take things one game at a time and don’t say “We’re gonna win the World Series!” in May a bad name.
Boy am I glad I didn’t invest in one of those…

Keep the "W"
As stated it is tradition. With that said, I did something today that I had no idea what kind of resonse I would get. I live in JAX, FLA so baseball is not very important down here. Of cours I heard all the crap on Thursday about Da Cubs choking (there term not mine, although . . ) I put up with it as I’ve put up with it all of my Cub life. Didn’t go to work on Fri so I was OK. After Sat I was as pissed as all other Cub Fans, but I dealt with it (again). Monday I wore my Cub gear, thought I’d show that I am a fan. but you know what, the one person who ripped me about Da Cubs choking sorta gagged when he came into the office. He just stared at me and I did not hear another word from him the whole day. Everyone I ran into just stared. Not sure what the hell was going on, but I did not have to hear all the crap.
Had to share this with other Cub Fans, ain’t none down here!
They were "Cubbed". Any team that gets beat late by the Cubs.

I don't have a 'W' flag, but
I have one of the flags they fly on roof of Wrigley – a white flag with the 80’s Cubbie bear logo. Got it at the ‘end of the year’ sale the Cubs have. It was up for every day during the year, but it comes down today. It stayed up yesterday just so the neighbors knew I was still proud of the season (in total).
Come mid-February, it’ll go back up.
Keep your flags, folks.

My ‘W’ flag stays up in my room at all times, I dont take it down and put it on our flag pole because ti is too big, we are tring to find one that would fit for the house. I just keep my W flag because it reminds me of the Cubs, and Wrigley (I always sit and wait to watch them put it up after the game).. But I wonder if the fact I keep my W flag on my wall at all times would constitute as misuse of the “W”?

by All The Way on Oct 6, 2008 3:55 PM CDT 0 recs
Hm, interesting question.
I guess my gut reaction is that, no, having a W flag on your wall at all times doesn’t constitute misuse. The misuse occurs only when the flag is actually being used as a flag. Perhaps that’s ridiculous, but it’s par for the course when it comes to these baseball superstitions of mine.
So this is how it ends.

is more a statement of sad resignation. How bad’s it gonna be this time?

sadly my Sox fan friends saw the sign n were like “what is going to happen, them choking in the playoffs” they ended up being right, that helped me make up my mind to take it down yesterday.

My .02
Burn all “It’s Gonna Happen” materials. Here’s a reminder for you all – the guy that sells all that crap is the guy who ran on the field on Sept. 28, 1995 and charged Cubs reliever Randy Myers. Myers saw the man coming, dropped his glove and knocked him down with his forearm. Everytime we see he outside Wrigley, or at Bernie’s hawking his stuff, we interrupt and try to convince the purchaser not to buy it. So if you own, burn it now.
For the “W” flag. Let’s do the tradition right. If you have the flag at the game, don’t display it until the cubs actually WIN. Too many times have I see idiot fans rolling out the flags in the 2nd inning. The “W” means we won that day, respect it. If you have it hanging in your room/house, I don’t expect you to take it down between games and only hang it when they win – unless you so choose.

But getting so pissed at a Cub closer for blowing still another save during a wild card chase that you just can’t stand it anymore and charge the mound? I have empathy for the feelings if not the actions.

I had a W/IGH sign
displayed in my window all summer long, rotating it when the Cubs lost. My condo faces a busy street (159th St.). I have taken it and all my other cubs paraphernalia down (the gnome, dairy queen helmet, Cubs pennant on my front door and countless others). I’m thinking about picking up some poster board on my way home and making a giant " It didn’t happen" sign for that window. I got to have some fun with it ya know.

I think this is a personal decision. Even when our team's win, which has happened
(Bears & Bulls), we eventually get tired of the promotional stuff.
I found a Superbowl Shuffle VHS tape a couple years ago and my first thought after watching it again was “Were we all insane?”
The Cubs are going to play in 2009 and hopefully field a better team that is peaking come October and not limping.
by DudeVf11 on Oct 6, 2008 8:23 PM CDT 0 recs
I have read all the posts here.
Agreed on the general consensus: fly the W flag — but ONLY after wins, and ONLY after the game is actually won!
The IGH signs — ugh. Time to dump them forever.

Also: the "This Is the Year" stuff
Ditto to many commenters: keep the ‘W’ flag. (But if you just can’t stomach holding on to it- I’ll keep it safe for you.) It’s a long-standing tradition, a unique symbol for the team, and I believe it represents the optimism and determination of all Cubs fans. This is why I would be a little more lax in my ‘W’ flag etiquette, and would allow for its appearance beyond strictly after wins- it recognizes past success and confidence in the future even in tough times.
But yeah, the ‘IGH’ crap is awful and needs to go, permanently. Especially considering the source, it represents the worst kind of cashing-in and bandwagoning of the Cubs. Same goes for those proclaiming mid-season that ‘This Is The Year’ (TITY?) After 2007 and especially 2008, we should know that there is no such thing as being ‘due’ for a championship, no lucky rabiit’s foot for getting there, and that getting ahead of ourselves just makes us all look foolish. Just be a fan, cheer hard, and don’t lean on curses or magic.
by SandbergEra on Oct 7, 2008 12:35 AM CDT 0 recs
I think...
we need to bury all this IGH and This is the Year and anything else that dwells on not winning a WS. It took a couple days but i’m starting to come around on this year. Sure it really sucked at the end, but we just witnessed two straight winning seasons and 3 of 4 seasons. Also, back to back Division champs.
All i’m saying is instead of dwelling on not winning a WS let’s remember that we are still witnessing a period of very good Cubs baseball. There have been many Cubs fans who went cradle to grave and not seen what we have. I’m just trying to get it in perspective in my head and maybe if the players could do that the pressure might not be as great? I hope I made some sense…
