D-Lee/DP
Of all the things that need to happen in this off-season, we need to get a new first baseman. Delete this post if you want but I got real tired of watching him kill ralleys. Yes is a great defensive first baseman save for the error in the 2nd game but it happens and I'm ok with it more or less. But even I could stike him out with 3 balls low and away and he would swing at everyone. Its very frustrating to watch a guy act like there is no problem with his at bats. You never once heard him say anything about need to get better at bats. I know not all outs are bad but double plays are always bad. When he did drive the ball there were 2 outs or he was leading off the inning. I also feel signing Jim Edmonds and Reed Johnson wouldnt be the worse thing that could happen. For what those two will cost and how we can platoon them and bat them against different people, no one center fielder will do that well.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation, Bleed Cubbie Blue, or Al Yellon, editor-in-chief. FanPost opinions are, however, valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

I don't see a single thing in this post questioning Lee's character and heart...
… only his performance, which I’d suspect he would admit wasn’t what he would have wanted it to be.

He saves Ramirez and Theriot from at least 10 errors a season.
If Lee is coming up to lead an inning or with two outs and no one on, how the hairy frick is that his fault?

D-Lee Still Good
D-Lee is still a good hitter. He did better than Sori and A-Ram in the division series. I believe we all got spoiled by Lee’s performance in 2005. The best thing for D-Lee would be to move down to the 5 or 6 spot in the order. I’d rather have D-Lee at first than Hoffpauir.

why not?
I dont care where they hit. They are paid to play no matter what. I think if you ask a lot of players out there most dont care what spot they hit as long as they start. Now some like Sori do better in the lead off but if it was hit 5th or sit what do you think he would do? The amount of money you pay them shouldnt matter how they play. They need to do all they can every game for 9 innings and if that means hitting 6th and driving in runs from there then thats what they do.

I really don't think you completely understood what I said or may be I did a lousy job
in presenting my point.
DLee is getting paid big hitter money (13M annually with a full NTC) to hit for POWER in the number 3 spot. He got this contract after putting up big power numbers in 2005. In most of the lineups first basemen are your big power hitters as they play the least difficult defensive position. Now if a lineup has big hitters elsewhere then they can sacrifice a little power for glove at 1B. But we DO NOT have that liberty. There is every indication that with each passing year Lee is going to hit for average and less power (in fact his average will also decline with his bat speed).
Now, do I want to replace Lee with Hoff? Hell No. If possible do I want to replace Lee with a Tex..Hell Yes. So all I am saying is that if there is a possibility we should trade Lee for an upgrade. In other words we should be open for trading Lee. I agree that in the WORST case scenario we should move him out of the 3 spot.

Exactly who
I was thinking. I dont know if Tex is available but I think it would be an upgrade. And yes he is paid to hit for power but it was obvious in June he wasnt going to. I think a faster way to help him fix his swing this year would have been to call Hoff up and bench Lee for a week or so. Granted it would have been hard but it would have got the point across. We need him to hit and hit in the 3 spot. Look at what Gracie did for us. No he wasnt a power hitter and wasnt expected to but you put him up there when you needed to make contact and he did. I know he was a different player than Lee but when you have Sori and Rami and at Times Edmonds for your power and dont forget Might Mike, you can loose power for cosistancy.

and exactly how many championships we won when Grace was here?
Look, we are doing all this micro analysis because we believe that the Cubs brass for whatever reasons is finally serious about bringing a championship to the North Side and we are trying to better the best. I call it micro analysis because for a casual eye there is nothing really wrong (well may be Soriano in the leadoff spot :-) ) with our lineup. But if you follow this team every single game of the season you will certain anomalies like Soriano hitting in the leadoff spot and DLee’s lack of power hitting in the 3 spot. I am not saying that we should absolutely have a Pujols or a Howard at 1B because they are rare commodities.
Now please don’t tell me you are serious about benching DLee for Hoff to get the point across. Lee is NOT a rookie and I am absolutely positive that he already got the point and so did Lou and the rest of the world. Unfortunately the answer is not Hoff at least not this season.

Never
Said it was the answer. No he isnt a rookie and he shouldnt need to be benched but when a vet like him sees his is struggling with his swing he should bench himself, step away from pressing and relax. And the best way is to take yourself out of the pressure and let your mind catch up with your competitiveness. It happens to all players at some point but they need to see it and deal with it instead of pressing more and more.

You are fixated on this whole DLee has been 'pressing' thing
and what I am trying to say is that his capabilities are on a decline. Lee is getting old and there is a high probability that he WILL NOT put up the requisite power numbers. It doesn’t matter if he is or if he is not pressing. He is just a slow motion replay of this 2005 self.

Exactly
This isn’t a mental thing, not entirely anyway. He’s just declining at age 32, losing his batting eye, and losing his power.
He’s like Soriano in that he’s only really hitting mistake pitches, but he’s unlike Soriano in that he’s not really capable of hitting those mistakes for any power.
Assuming that he can’t be moved, I assume that he’ll be batting #6 next year, with Soriano at #5. Lee simply isn’t a heart-of-the-order hitter anymore.

Maybe he did a little better in 3 games but I thinks its more important to do well for 162. Everyone can struggle for a while but from June to October is more than a slump. Right now I dont know what first baseman are available but we need to look at the possiblities.

Why does everyone keep saying this re: defense?
Is he really still that good defensively at this point? How much better is he than the average 1B defensively? He’s not even in Mark Teixera’s league defensively.
I know that Teix is going to get a giant payday this offseason, and that it would be very difficult to add him, but this subjective “Lee is still a great defensive 1B” argument needs some objective facts to back it up, or it doesn’t hold water. He made 9 errors this year. And if we’re going to claim that he prevents other people’s errors, that doesn’t hold water either – Aramis’ errors were up 80% this season.
Lee is a fine defensive 1B. Probably still above average. But not really so far above average that it excuses his abject lack of power. He used to be an awesome defensive 1B. But there is absolutely no way in heck that he could have made the diving stab that Teix made in the 9th inning of Game 4 of the ALDS, for instance.

From games this season
I think DLee has been great defensively. He’s made our 3B, SS and 2B look like much better players digging balls from the ground.
I don’t watch every other team so I don’t have too much to compare him to but it just seems like he can handle our team at 1B quite well.

Simply the fact that Rami's Error numbers were up
doesn’t mean Lee caused them. That fact gives 0 proof of how many errors he saved. How do you know theres NO WAY? He made plenty of amazing stabs on hard hit balls all season long. It’s so hard to rate how good someone is defensively
Ryan Braun made 0 errors in left field, is he a good defensive left fielder?

I'm not trying to prove the point here.
It’s conventional wisdom around here that D-Lee’s defense is so valuable that it makes up for the loss in his offensive abilities. I’m just asking someone to explain why they believe that to be the case in something other than completely subjective terms, and his defensive stats don’t make the case.
Every first baseman in MLB can pick a ball out of the dirt. Some are better than others, but if Lee were some sort of defensive superstar, you’d expect that to be borne out in his range factor vs. the league.

After 07 and 08 playoff results...
…there is little doubt they need to upgrade the offense to make it more difficult for opposing teams to game plan against. If this means trading DLee to get a piece you need, you go ahead and do it. Nothing against DLee, but you can’t put one player ahead of improving your team to try and win a championship.
In fact, the only player on this club that should be untouchable is Soto. Beyond that, do what you have to do to improve the club.
Now, back to reality. It is very unlikely that Hendry trades any of the core pieces of the current club. The two main reasons are this; no-trade clauses will limit Hendry’s flexibility and it has never been Hendry’s style to trade established players until their value has significantly dropped and I would doubt he starts now.
They can win a championship with this core, but pieces need to be added to get that done.

I won’t argue that it seemed that there was something fundamentally wrong with his swing all year and Lee even said many times he felt there was but couldn’t fix it. This is definitely cause for concern, but does everybody forget that Lee was one of the few to show up to the playoffs this year?

No one is talking about giving up DLee for a couple of draft picks. I think the whole discussion is about how to upgrade our 3 spot. If there comes a possibility for improving the team by trading DLee for an upgrade then we should be open for that possibility. That’s all we are saying. You got to accept the fact that DLee is on the wrong side of his performance parabola. We are not saying that he reached the bottom of that parabola.

IMO...
…Lee’s bat is reaching a stage where it has slowed down just a tad. He is not pulling balls middle in out of the park like he used to and he is chasing more low and outside breaking balls. When your bat slows, you know you need to start your swing a little sooner to get around on the pitchers fastball, and this automatically makes you more suspectable to getting fooled on the breaking ball in the dirt.
Lee is still a good hitter, but the days of him hitting 300+ with 30+ homers are probably behind him.

I think he needs to change his approach
For some reason he seemed to stop driving the ball to right field like he used to. Whenever he struck out on the pitch that was low and away, he pulled off like he was trying to pull it. If he were to go down and drive that ball into left field (a la Theriot with some actual power) I think he would be a dangerous hitter again, and his power numbers would go up (maybe not homers, but doubles at least).

I agree completely...
…and there have been a lot of hitters who have continued to be productive when their bat slows a tad like Lee’s has.
IMO, he needs to focus on pitches middle out and think about driving those to right center field. He did that in the last game of the Dodger series and has in the past when he waits on the pitch.

Those days were never here.
Lee hit above .300 AND thirty+ homers only once in his career, that being 2005. He also has only batted above .300 twice. The problem with Lee is that not only are his fly balls not going very far, but he is hitting far fewer fly balls than he has in the past. His GB/FB is higher than ever before, at 1.33. A power hitter can’t afford to hit fifty seven more grounders than fly balls, especially in the three hole. If Lee sticks around in the middle of the order next year, the double plays will not go away.

Paul Sullivan made a cryptic reference...
Lee has a no-trade clause but could be asked to lift it if he’s dealt to a team in California for pitching help. Lee lives in Sacramento, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility.
I have no idea if he’s just speculating or if he has a source for this.
by cwyers on Oct 8, 2008 10:54 AM CDT 0 recs
With Sullivan...
…its probably speculation, but I would be surprised if the Cubs didn’t entertain this thought – at least internally not only with Lee, but other guys as well.
The problem here is what I mentioned yesterday. Hendry can have talks with teams about what they could get for Lee, but at some point (before the trade is made) he has to include Lee in those discussions. At that point, what if Hendry has an agreement in principle with a team, but Lee says he doesn’t want to play there? Now, you have one of your core players who knows you want to trade him, but he is still here. Lee seems like a real stand up guy and could probably handle it well, but these no trades can really cause problems in trying to move guys.

I like Lee and certainly think the Cubs can win with him, but only Soto would be untradable if it was up to me. Again, Hendry has backed him self in a corner with no-trades, so lets hope he gets a lot more money to spend.
