anyone else finding it really tough to watch the NLCS?

Maybe it's just because I live in New Jersey and my housemate is a Phillies fan (well, he follows the team casually throughout the summer and starts to really pay attention in September, so take from that what you will), but all the feelings of anger and frustration I felt last week are resurfacing.

Perhaps I shouldn't have underestimated the length of time that the healing process would take, but for at least a couple of days, I had done my best not to think about it.  I think the fact that there was no baseball the last few days helped.

But now, watching this game, I just can't help but think about the fact that Wrigley Field sits empty, and my pseudo-fan housemate gets to cheer on a team whose fans will belittle and insult me incessantly all of next season.

I could just be bitter, but does anyone else feel the same way right now?

Not bitter, just disappointed...

… yes, I should be sitting at Wrigley tonight seeing the Cubs beat the Phillies.

But I’m not. I have the game on, but have been sort of half-paying attention.

Im with you Al.

This team was like the pretty girl you meet at the party. You guys are laughing and flirting and holding hands with the promise of something more. When that time comes, she gets struck by lightning. Thats my analogy.

I cannot watch the games, when I tuned in last night, I felt we were still a better team then BOTH the Phils and Dodgers, but what are you gonna do, we got beat.

Phillies are going to win the World Series in my view

And I kinda like that team so it makes watching more palatable. Phils are a team of destiny this year.

I think the Rays are the Team of Destiny.

And, last night’s loss aside, I’m still picking the Dodgers to win the NLCS.

still not over the NLDS

so likley not going to pay much attention….actually, the fact that the games are ‘competitve’ just makes me even sicker about our club….it’s going to be a long 4-5 mos, and likely a long 4-5 yrs I fear…..

At first it is...

…but I love basebll so much (especially good baseball), you just sort of forget about it and move on.

As Rick Sutcliffe said in 1984 about the Padres...

He said:

They are going to the World Series, and we are going home. It is very hard to deal with. This will hurt for a long, long time."

Of course, Mike Royko, one of my favorite columnists said almost in response:

Let’s knock off the clown act for the rest of the country. Let’s stop wearing futility like a badge. So it hurts. So the Cubs lost. So you got left at the altar one more time. So what? Lift your glass in salute, and have another. Opening Day is less than six months away.

The Wise Bespectacled Ukranian Man didn't tell us what to do ..

after two Old Styles. Less then six months is a long time .. but that is a great quote. There was nobody like old Mikey and his love for the Cubs and Cubs Park.

But I do have a life outside the Cubs and BCB. I’m doing fine. I just hate the bad undertaste in my mouth that isn’t going away.

Well, Next Year is here .. and Jack's century's gotta end some time .. GO CUBBIES!

Excellent advice. The 2008 Cubs season ended with failure. The season had some great moments.

There’s enough in place to start again 2009 Opening Day. I like that approach

I'm a Cubs fan, then a baseball fan

It hurts as a Cubs fan, but as a baseball fan I crave postseason action, and this is an example of it. Love this time of year, pulling Dodgers all the way!

by AeroZach on Oct 9, 2008 10:41 PM CDT   0 recs

THE AGONY.............

I can’t even go near the tube …It hurts so deep ..yes most of us would had either been at Wrigley or glued to the TV…..I don’t even care who wins just glad the Sox got beat at least I have some comfort in that …..But i will be making the trip to Mesa again……

by cubs north on Oct 9, 2008 11:06 PM CDT   0 recs

I'm not watching...

not because it “hurts”….I’m over it…but more because I don’t really give two craps about any of the teams left. I may watch Game 1 of the WS….and I’ll probably watch whatever game could be the WS clincher for the Rays…LOL.

As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

by santoswoodenlegs on Oct 9, 2008 11:52 PM CDT   0 recs

The reason its not interesting to me

is because when i see those two teams replays go over in my head about all the times we’ve went head to head and came out on top…….WE WERE BETTER!!!!! ARGH!!!!!!

by StlCUBBIE on Oct 10, 2008 12:26 AM CDT   0 recs

it really is tough to fathom...

A year like this makes me wish that Major League Baseball were like it used to be, and the Cubs would have played the Angels. But let’s face it, for the Cubs to get into the playoffs as the best team in the National League was a rarity, and if and when the Cubs do finally end this nonsense, there’s a good chance it could be as a Wild Card team.

There are no excuses that can be made, no matter how you look at it. As tough as it would’ve been for the Cubs to get farther and then lose, I just wish they could’ve gone out with some dignity. Knowing what I know now, I would rather have seen the Lansing Lugnuts play the Dodgers in the first round.

Baseball is a drug though; even when I can see it start to ruin my life, I can’t help but go back to it.

by mycubs1987 on Oct 10, 2008 1:04 AM CDT   0 recs

Not really watching, but...

following the scores. It’s just tough for me to think about what could have been. How good things were going throughout the year…anyways, Go Rays!

You ARE freaking out MAN!

I can't watch...

As much as I enjoy baseball, I just can’t watch. I checked the score this morning just to see who won, but it is too painful. I might tune in to the World Series if the Rays make it.

Someday we'll go all the way...

by CubsBullsBears on Oct 10, 2008 9:34 AM CDT   0 recs

I have no problem watching or listening to the playoffs.

I mean, it’s not like I’m accustomed to seeing the Cubs in the NLCS. Now that the shock and disappointment is subsiding, this feels like any other Fall really, and I’m savoring every bit of baseball I can get before Winter sets in. I don’t even find myself hating the Dodgers that much.

Football season!

Once the Cubs get eliminated, I mostly focus on the football season. I am not very interested in the NLCS, but I think the Rays taking the AL pennant would be a great story.

by Dave in the basement on Oct 10, 2008 10:55 AM CDT   0 recs

I'll watch if its on and I'm doing nothing else

But I’m not making a point to watch it. I wouldn’t say it is “hard” to watch, but I am just no longer all that interested.

Actually, I am much more likely to watch the ALCS, since Boston is sort of my AL team.

by SuperContext on Oct 10, 2008 11:22 AM CDT   0 recs

easy watchin'

I thought it would be too painful to watch the NLCS, but I acutally find it easier to watch when I don’t care that much. I can appreciate good plays and good players when I’m not so invested in the outcome. It’s sort of like the Cardinals/Astros series, when I laughed when Pujols hit the HR off of Lidge that traveled half way to Mexico. That’s gotta be the only time I ever enjoyed one of his HR’s. Now I’m enjoying Victorino and Utley while I can.

26 years and counting...

by sf_thinn on Oct 10, 2008 12:55 PM CDT   0 recs

Can't watch any baseball.

Since it’s going to be Rays/Phillies, with the Rays winning — again (as I have said time and time again) it’s another Florida team with no fan base, ‘enjoying’ another championship.

The good folks of Tampa/St. Pete couldn’t find the dome without Mapquest. But, they’ll be there, because it will be ‘fun’ and the ‘place to be’ for a few days.

The weight of history won’t be on a team, that until now — probably had the lowest profile in MLB.

We’ll see Joe Carter’s HR off of Mitch Williams so many times — THAT, somehow — will be written into a ‘curse.’

I must still be depressed

I thought I was over the dissapointing end to this season, but watching the games last night brought it all back. When Utley & Burrell hit those homers in the 6th, all I could envision was how crazy Wrigley would’ve been if those homers had been hit by DLee & Soto in Game 1. I will likely not watch much more of the playoffs & am already looking forward to standing in the cold on the 3rd Friday in February, or whenever the individual ticket onsale date occurs.

by sowsman on Oct 10, 2008 3:30 PM CDT   0 recs

Wait...the baseball playoffs are still going on?

All I know is the Blackhawks start tonight, Bulls had pre-season game last night on Comcast, and the hometown Bears are on the way up since the NFC North is….well the NFC North.

Yes….I’ve picked up a few teams in the past years to follow to drown out the sorrows of summer.

rays

true, the players complained all season on how people dont come to the games.here in fla nobody goes out during the week so the rays only draw on the weekend. but like marlin fans suddenly the rays are awash with fans.cant wait till i have to hear how the rays won a world series while the cubs choked again.

by NOMAR on Oct 10, 2008 6:32 PM CDT   0 recs

Even though you have no idea

how to work a keyboard, your insight is 100% correct. I’ll give you a pass on style points. I believe the Rays will, indeed — win it all.

And their 7,000 fans will rejoice.

At least, it will be the Phillies they beat — not the Cubs. That might have been THE most damning turn of events for us — much worse than getting clubbed by the Dodgers

And to push this further — IF the Rays win — that metro area will have won a Stanley Cup, a Super Bowl, and a World Series, in less than 10 years. That makes me somewhat ill.

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Oct 12, 2008 5:45 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Not at all, I really enjoyed last night's game.

It’s not like the Cubs had a chance against the Phillies…

to me the season ended at game 3. I’m bereft.
