UPDATED AGAIN - Cubs sign two from Korea; will they sign any from Japan?

UPDATE - Rather than post a whole other fanpost on this, I thought I'd add this link on the Cubs' two new Korean players.  Both players look interesting and it's good to see the Cubs' presence in Korea continuing to pay off.

SECOND UPDATE - the Cubs are now connected to another left-hander from Japan, Ken Takahashi, who is OLD, but left-handed.  I very much like the idea of getting a left-hander for the 'pen who is from Japan.

The story of Junichi Tazawa's non-draft started off-season rumor mills in relation to Japanese players coming to America.  (Actually, blogs have been speculating for a while now.)  Who is Tazawa and who else could come to America?  Will the Cubs pursue another Japanese player?

Star-divide

Tazawa is a 22-23 year-old fire-baller whose fastball reportedly hits 97 MPH.  He asked Japanese teams not to draft him because he intended to come straight to the US.  They didn't draft him.  He's on his way.  The Cubs have been scouting him, as have several other teams, including, in person, Braves GM, Frank Wren.  With Wren there, the Braves having money to spend, and their off-season needs, I won't be surprised if they win the Tazawa bidding.  Of course, there's also the Yankees and Sox, too.  With money tight, this doesn't seem to be where the Cubs will make their splash (if they make one).

Hitoki Iwase is a solid left-handed closer for Dome's old Dragons team.  I've recommended the Cubs signing him, but it looks like he'll stay in Japan.

Another Dragon, Kenshin Kawakami, has hired an American agent and appears to have received an insulting offer from Chunichi.  He's also on his way.  Kawakami looks like the kind of pitcher Lou would love.  He doesn't walk people.

Eventually, we'll be hearing a lot aboutYu Darvish.  Probably not yet, though.  Rumors are if he gets posted, the bidding will dwarf Matsuzaka's price.

Koji Uehara has been connected byrumor to the Cubs before.  That was when he looked a lot more tempting and just missed making free agency because of a DL-stint.  He has been compared to Brad Radke in having pinpoint control.  That's the good part.  The bad part is, well, his 2008 season, where he posted an ERA over 5.00.

Finally, the dark horse is Kyuji Fujikawa, who was one of the standout Japanese players who did well in the Olympics.  Fujikawa isn't eligible for free agency until next year, but could potentially be posted.  Fujikawa is a strikeout pitcher who throws heat.  His strikeout totals suggest a smooth transition to the majors as a late inning reliever.

Poll
How do you think the Cubs will approach new player acquisitions in the Japanese market going forward?
Fukudome was just the beginning. The Cubs will be looking for Japanese players regularly now. We'll likely see someone new in 2009.
37 votes
Fukudome's disappointing second half has left a bad taste in the Cubs' mouth. There won't be any more Japanese players coming straight from Japan under Jim and Lou.
34 votes
The Cubs may want to add more Japanese players, but I think Lou's interviews and handling of Fukudome have hurt the Cubs' reputation overseas and they won't be able to get more Japanese players for a while.
29 votes
The Cubs will look at the Japanese leagues, especially given their scouting investment over there, but what they're looking for this off-season doesn't match with what's available.

Your poll sums it up pretty well.

As you know, I think it’s still possible that Fukudome will be bought out and return to Japan. But if this doesn’t happen and the Cubs commit to sticking with him, it’s possible they’ll look for more Japanese players. Some of the above could be a good fit. We’ll see.

I hope the Cubs rep hasnt been damaged...

I doubt it has, Fukudome’s struggles are his own, so one would hope he isnt bad mouthing the team to any friends he might have over there that are interested in playing here.

Will Tazawa start right off in the majors? He hasnt even played professionally over there, so am I correct to assume he’ll be a sort of Japanese Jeff Samardzija/bonus baby who will start in the minors despite a heft salary?

This is why more people should watch the World Baseball Classic, b/c youre going to see a lot of players who will be in the majors very soon. I’ll be very excited to see Darvish pitch for Japan….maybe that Korean SS we signed will play as well.

Anyway, I dont think Fukudome’s struggles will make the Cubs any more hesitant to delve into that market….Kosuke was an MVP and batting champ right? So his struggles came as a shock, I hope he can turn it around, his first few months were very exciting.

Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.

I don't think Fukudome would bad mouth the Cubs.

And the Cubs handling of Dome was a lot better than the Yankees handling of Kei Igawa. They may have handled it just right, given his struggles. I don’t know. I wish Dragonsfanatic would show up here again and tell us how the situation played out in Japan.

I don’t know where Tazawa will start his American career, but a Jeff Samardzija comp is probably a fair one – he’ll get a ML contract and be moved through the minors quickly. He may start in the majors. He may force that issue in his contract demands. He may not.

Reading up on Kawakami

He compared to Hiroki Kuroda, and we saw what he was able to do during the season. He’s on the older side (33), but could provide a solid back of the rotation arm, giving the Cubs the freedom to move Marquis without relying on Marshall or Hill to give them around 30 starts.

Here’s a quick profile from the Boston Globe:

Kenshin Kawakami, a 33-year-old righthanded pitcher, is most likely going to make a jump to the major leagues for the 2009 season as a free agent. Sports Nippon is reporting that the Red Sox are one of the teams that is interested in his services. As an ace of the Chunichi Dragons, he went 9-5 with 2.30 ERA last season and also pitched in the Beijing Olympics for the Japanese team. His career record is 112-72 with 3.22 ERA in 257 games during his 11 seasons with the Dragons and he was a major contributor when the Dragons won Japan Series in 2007. Kawakami’s best pitch is cut-fastball and is comparable to Hiroki Kuroda of the Dodgers.

Here’s one of Tazawa.

If we're still looking for a Fukufriend

Kawakami could fit that bill (not knowing their relationship while on the Dragons, though, who knows). I don’t think he’ll be as good as Kuroda. I think the Marquis comparison is more likely. Iwase is the one I thought matched the Cubs needs very well; he could still come over if the Cubs pushed for him.

I think Id rather have Marquis, as crazy as that might sound

A 33 year old import whos never pitched in the bigs? That seems a bit too risky

by bren on Nov 1, 2008 11:00 AM CDT up reply actions

It's risky on both sides.

He could be a big disappointment. He could be a fair bit better than Marquis. I’d love to know what the Cubs scouts are saying about Kawakami and how much Jim trusts his scouts after the Dome disappointment.

The Dodgers got exactly that when they signed Kuroda...

… a 33-year-old import who had never pitched in the majors. He had a better year than Marquis did.

The good thing about Marquis at this point

is it is only a one year commitment. This gives the team payroll flexibility as you would likely have to sign most free agents to a multi-year contract.

I've long thought

that the J-Leagues will eventually face the same sort of challenge that befell the Negro Leagues when the color barrier came down. I understand there are rules in place to prevent the scavenging from being too vicious, but the really good young players are getting wise to the fact that they can forgo the Japanese draft and come straight to the U.S. I’m really looking forward to the next few classes of Japanese rookies.

Great post

been waiting on this post for awhile. It will be recommended by myself. these are the kinda post that make this blog better than the rest.

on to the topic at hand—I’m not against signing more asian players. I really think we expected too much of fukudome. language barrier, new faces, new culture, and most importantly a whole new style. I’m no expert but from what I think I know—Asian players are very loyal and committed to doing there jobs. I believe dome works his ass off this winter and makes a darn good player for us all of next year.

These "poll" questions have gotten ridiculous

Some of you need to learn the artform of an effective poll question and set of answers. The answer options provided here are clearly biased, too wordy and confusing. Maybe Al Yellon should be executor of all poll questions from now on.

you can start your OWN poll. It could even be about polls!

Should polls have answers that are black and white and in short sentence format with upteen qualifiers to each answer?

1) Yes.
2) No.
3) They should be red and green in compound sentence format with downteen qualifiers to each answer.

Yep

From the Trib:

Hendry already has made three moves this off-season—picking up Rich Harden’s $7 million option, declining Henry Blanco’s $3 million option Friday and firing Fukudome’s interpreter, Ryuji Araki. Hendry wants to find an interpreter who jells better with the Japanese outfielder.

Interesting.

Araki was very highly regarded, but doing a job like that is very personal and if he and Fukudome didn’t get along for whatever reason, yes, definitely find someone better.

I think he was selected based on his ability to fit into a clubhouse

(he was an athletic trainer working at some college), and that Dome had no say in the matter.

The thing I don’t like about the move is that it appears to be a “scapegoat” situation; the word “fire” makes it sound as though it weren’t as mutual decision. Had Dome and Araki agreed that they weren’t a good match, Araki probably would have quietly resigned; his Japanese upbringing would dictate that he honorably step aside, if requested. Instead, Hendry seems to be making the decision unilaterally.

Boston Globe thinks Tazawa will be a Red Sox

But they also mention that the Cubs have been in contact:

The Sox still appear to be the frontrunner for Junichi Tazawa, the 22-year-old Japanese amateur righthander who has been scouted by the Red Sox for a couple of years, according to the Globe’s Nick Cafardo. But word on Tuesday was that both the Atlanta Braves and Seattle Mariners held meetings with him in Japan Monday. According to the Herald’s Sean McAdam, who also lists the Sox as the frontrunner for Tazawa, the Sox have been the most aggressive team with regard to the hard-throwing righty, who is also being courted by the Atlanta Braves, Florida Marlins and Chicago Cubs, among others.

From MLB.com:
The Braves are believed to have offered a Major League contract to Junichi Tazawa, a 22-year-old Japanese right-hander who is also drawing interest from a number of other big league teams, including the Mariners, Cubs, Marlins and Red Sox. Terms of the offer are unknown and Wren had no comment when asked about it.
