Daylight Saving Time Ends Tonight
There's not much going on baseball-wise today, a slow weekend after the end of the World Series, before awards are announced and before the open free-agent season begins on November 13.
So from BCB, a reminder to turn your clock back an hour tonight (if you are in the USA and Canada, except Arizona and Hawaii in the US, and Saskatchewan and some small parts of British Columbia, which do not observe DST), as DST ends at 2 am local time.

I have posted about this many times.
I’m a director at ABC-7 in Chicago, working on early morning news.

Al,
Would you mind getting there a little bit early for some on-air practice? The Mariners’ job is still open, and BB might be a candidate to fill it…

Bet you wish now you never asked....
Catherine whispered into my ear, her breath rich with faraway spices, that she desire to make love. She wanted to try shinshi shinshi. Now, I'd been begging her to try shinshi shinshi for months. She'd refused on the grounds that it was unclean. Finally, she was willing to accept her lover's body in places no one had ever trespassed. Specifically, the ear canal.
For those of us who work overnights...
it just means another hour of work… It’s 2 AM, wait, no it’s 1 AM… great.
For those of us whose bars close at 2...
it just means another round of beers. It’s 2 AM, wait, no it’s 1 AM… sweet!
Friend: Soto for Mayor of Chicago!
Me: Yeah! Just because we don't live there doesn't mean they won't let us vote!
not everywhere
I know out here in Naperville, they still close at what they perceive to be 2am.

Jim Edmonds’ agent says Edmonds is not retiring. Will he be a Cub in 2009?
The author of this post is not a certified scout, doctor, agent, statistician, manager, or journalist, nor was he ever a very good player, though he tried very hard to be like Ryne Sandberg and was about as scrappy as it gets (in T-ball). Interesting.
Well, here’s the question. He may not WANT to retire, but will anyone sign him?
Apart from the Cubs, who needs a LH-hitting centerfielder who likely has to be part of a platoon?
"That's my opinion and if you don't like it, well, I have others." ~ Groucho Marx
San Diego? :)
One question will be – how many teams still view Edmonds as a CF and will Edmonds prefer to sign with a club that views him as a CF? If that’s the case, the Cubs could have an inside track. That depends on how much the Cubs really want to get “younger and more athletic,” though, too.

LOL on San Diego.
I would think Edmonds wants to stay a CF. He did play a competent CF, especially given his age.
The Cubs have a decision to make. Lou has already hinted he wants Fukudome and Johnson to platoon in CF — but then, that presumes the Cubs can find a full-time right fielder either by trade or free agency.
"That's my opinion and if you don't like it, well, I have others." ~ Groucho Marx
Edmonds' defense was questioned in SD
and was given as a reason they cut bait so soon. The 2008 Fielding Bible ballots are now posted and Edmonds received not one vote for CF defense. 22 other CFs received at least a single 10th place vote. That’s another point for me suggesting that many people may not think Edmonds can carry CF, especially in larger parks.

Lou's statement may have been made presuming Edmonds was going to retire.
On the other hand, Lou says one thing and then does the opposite many times, so who knows?

It used to be nice when Indiana didn't have to roll their clocks back.
And to make it worse, we’re on Eastern Time now, which makes next to no sense.
I love to play baseball. I'm a baseball player. I've always been a baseball player. I'm still a baseball player. That's who I am. - Ryne Sandberg
Well, the time zone line...
… has to be somewhere, right?
"That's my opinion and if you don't like it, well, I have others." ~ Groucho Marx
sure, somewhere.
I just don’t think it needs to be in Indiana. I liked it better when we were our own time zone, switching between Central and Eastern.

Bowling Green, KY
I find it interesting that Bowling Green is almost exactly as far east as Indy is, but Bowling Green is on central time and Indy is on eastern time.
"The big possum walks late." - Harry Caray
pretty much
some western indiana counties are on central time, the rest on eastern time.
I mean, how many people really look at Indiana as being Eastern? If anything, it should be on Central time, IMO.

Nope, don't think they ever have
This past March, and probably this coming March, I’ll leave Chi-town for ST and set my watch back an hour, then come home a few days later and set my watch forward 2 hours….it’s weird, nearly the entire country changes their clocks, AZ doesn’t.

Speaking of the Fielding Bible awards above, here's how other Cubs fared
Derrek Lee placed 6th with two 2nd place votes.
No Cub 2B received any votes.
Aramis Ramirez received 2 points, reflecting a couple 10th place votes or one 9th place vote.
Ryan Theriot received 5 points, equal with Jhonny Peralta.
Alfonso Soriano received 20 points, good for 11th place.
Kosuke Fukudome was 9th among RFs
Geovany Soto was 13th among Cs with 15 points.
Ryan Dempster was 4th among pitchers, and Rich Harden also received a few points.

I never realized what a good fielding pitcher
Dempster was until this year. That really impressed me.

That's something you wouldn't have noticed...
… about Dempster before, seeing him for only one inning at a time. But yes, his defensive abilities impressed me, too.

I wouldn't exactly put him in Maddog...
…or Jim Kaat class, but he’s certainly in the top 15% or so if not a little better. I’m most impressed with his anticipation of where the ball is going to be hit and that is what has set Maddog above all else IMHO for the past 20 years.

In John Dewan's plus/minus system connected to the Fielding Bible
Mike Fontenot faired well, coming in 7th.
Aramis Ramirez was the 4th worst 3B.
Jim Edmonds came in as the second worst CF. Nate McLouth had him beat by a fair amount.
I’m also noting that guys whose names have been brought up for Cubs RF acquisitions are also showing up with poor numbers, Hawpe and Abreu are the two worst RFs. Griffey’s the next worst. Raul Ibanez is the third worst LF, worse than Jack Cust.

I just realized -
Adam Dunn was not listed as one of the five worst corner OFs at either LF or RF. Who thinks Dunn would be a better RF in Wrigley Field than Abreu? Than Ibanez?

I do, if you consider the offense he'd bring.
if you’re looking only at defense, then I’d agree with cowsarecool – they’re all bad.
Curious – if Dunn isn’t in bottom five for corner OFs, any idea where does he rank? link only shows top 10 and bottom 6.

I’d guess he’s bottom ten, though.

The end of DST gives me the blues
Especially Sunday night when it’s dark by 4:45 … and we know it’s going to get darker and darker earlier and earlier. Here’s to December 22nd when the days start getting longer again!
All generalizations are false.
The constant darkness is why winter is so depressing.

Try living in central/northern
Sweden. Our Scandinavian colleagues work and a live a couple hours north of Stockholm. In the winter time right around the solstice, it never gets completely light during the day. Then again, 6 months later it never really gets completely dark.

rent "Insomina" when you get a chance
great flick starring Al Pacino and Robin Williams. Pacino is a detective involved in a murder investigation set primarily in Alaska during the summer. Suffice to say, he has a little trouble getting to sleep at night…
btw, I think Williams is one of the funniest people alive, so it always impresses the hell out of me when he pulls off a serious role – and he pulls it off quite well here.
Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."
Williams was one of the first comics out of the box post 9/11
and I will be forever grateful. He made me laugh through my tears. What a man! Also, I’m more sensitive to the whole daylight thing now that I’ve applied for a job in Fairbanks, AK… how many Cubs fans up there?!
All generalizations are false.
Bigger question...
Can you get high-speed internet and MLB.TV?

great movie
I was told the original foreign movie was better, but I couldn’t get through it after watching the Nolan version, knowing what was going to happen.

That was a really good movie.
Scary, and outstanding performances by Pacino and Williams both.

Williams also gave an AMAZING...
…‘serious’ performance in Dead Poets Society!

I'd rate that "almost serious"
agreed – it’s a great performance but there’s a handful of scenes where he cracks wise.

Slowpokes!
I changed my clock back last week as did the rest of Europe.
The day we lose our will to fight - Is the day we lose our Freedom.
Yeah, we used to be right in line with you folks
in the fall until last year. Think spring time we’re jumping ahead a couple weeks early now.
At least for the fall back now, the kids get about 2 full hours of daylight trick or treating. It was really nice here yesterday in the far NW suburbs, it cracked 70F by me. My kids now have enough candy until Valentine’s day.
Sweet Lou for Mayor in '11.
The disparity is really annoying
I happen to have a lot of meetings (phone/online) with people in Europe, and most of the time the difference is 7 hours (6 hours UK). Last week it was one hour less. If the meeting was scheduled by someone in North America then the Europeans had to appear an hour earlier. If the meeting was scheduled by someone in Europe, then the North Americans had to appear an hour later. This week it’s back to “normal”.
Now, we also have meetings with India, where they never have DST, so that time difference changes from 10.5 hours to 11.5 hours. Ugh.
Since I don't have to turn the clock back what this means to me is that TV shows are all almost late night shows.
Letterman at 12:30 AM AST (Puerto Rico time). Election night will be a long night even if the presidential race isn’t close. Thank God for DVR’s.
Hmmmmm.....
What was a better invention for couch potatoes, DVR or HD TV?

A couple of questions on the method...
Why would they project DeRo at 1B, but not at SS? He played one game at each spot.
Why would they project LBR at SS?
Why does LBR project to only .268/.340/.418? Are they basing it on something other than last year?
In your experience, how reliable are these numbers?
"I've never complained about it. I'm thankful to have a jersey." Mark DeRosa, 22 Aug 2007
DeRosa played a decent amount of 1B in 2007...
…which is probably why that’s popping up. Fontenot played SS in Iowa in 2007 as well.
ZiPS uses either 4 or 5 years of stats, including translated minor league stats. Typically their projections will be within .070 points of OPS. They’re a bit more accurate for established major league veterans and less accurate when dealing with less experienced players.
Thanks as always.
Did they peg DeRo’s OPS in 2008??? :-)

Looks Like Hill continues to dazzle!
"Rich Hill was lit up for seven runs — six earned — in 1 1/3 innings in his VWL start on Friday.
Hill had a strong first outing for Aragua, but he walked four in 3 2/3 innings in his previous start and he had no luck at all last night. He’s allowed nine earned runs and walked seven in 10 2/3 innings. "
