OT: Question about Cubs Convention 2009
I have never attended a Cubs Convention before and was planning on doing so this year. I was curious as to what current and former players would be there...there is a list on cubs.com for 2008 attendees but they are not guaranteed to be there this year. Also, my real question pertains to how the autograph and photo sessions work. Are there usually a lot of good opportunities for autographs, for example does Ryno sign autographs and take photos last year? Any information would be much appreciated.

The list of 2009 attendees should be posted about a week beforehand.
Autographs for the best known players, like Sandberg, are done by lottery. Other players get very long lines — some people have to wait in line for hours. That, unfortunately, happens when you have such popular players on a popular team.
"That's my opinion and if you don't like it, well, I have others." ~ Groucho Marx
My Advice
The first convention I went to, I expected to be able to get all sorts of autographs and quickly learned a few lessons.
If you win one of the lotteries (you get a scratch off ticket when you arrive) that is really the only way to guarantee an autograph. The best opportunity after that is to try to attend some of the sessions that different players participate in and get an autograph at the end, but there is always a mad dash of people. There is also usually an autograph “treasure hunt” right after the opening ceremony.
You can spend the entire convention waiting in lines to get autographs and be lucky to get one or two. My advice is to attend the different events and enjoy what you hear there.
That being said, I got “lucky” several years ago and was waiting for my car at the valet when Kerry Wood and Mark Prior walked out to get their car to go to dinner. They both signed while they were waiting for the car. So you could camp out later in the evening at the valet, but again I think you will enjoy the convention a lot more by going to the events. Hope you have a good time!

Thanks for the Info
I was not planning on spending too much time trying to get autographs, but it would really nice to get my Sandberg jersey signed…if that’s even possible.
I was lucky enough to get Sandberg in the Lobby about 4 years ago...
but it was pure chaos when he walked…almost impossible to sign something like a jersey. Your best bet is the lottery…about a 1 in 4 chance of winning I believe. Once you win the lottery, I believe that you go down and you pick a ball and they tell you who you have. This system is much better than what it was 5 plus years ago when they would post who won the lottery at various times on Saturday. It was pure chaos…between waiting in lines for other players and trying to figure out if you one the lottery.
The other way that I use to have great success was during the Opening Ceremonies. When the players walked In for the ceremony, I was able to get a few big guys…Banks being the biggest of them all. However, they have since changed how they introduce the players and they no longer walk into the grand ballroom in the same manner.
The lobby on Thursday night is usually the best night to get guys since I let of guys come in on Thursday and the lobby crowd is not nearly what it is on Friday and Saturday.
As Al said above, for the big name players who are not lottery picks (Williams, Santo, Dero, etc) you usually have to get in line several hours before they sign. For the less popular players…i.e. Bob Dernier’s of the world, you can usually have success walking up close to their signing time.
As far as pictures go…they won’t sign your item anymore. They will sign the picture frame if you buy the pitcure from them. Usually about 10-15 bucks…not a bad price to get Ernie’s or Ryno’s autograph.

Watch where Ryno manages next year...
If you do not catch him at the convention. He has been great here in Peoria, he signs at EVERY game after the gates open for about a half hour. There is always a line, but later in the season they are not as long. Obviously there will be managerial moves in the minors this year, but maybe you could catch him if you get a chance to travel to wherever he ends up.
Way back... outta here!!!
Players
I always got more autographs in the lobby and such than in lines. Always have 2 things, a pen to autograph with and something to autograph. Also always have your camera.
As far as who comes the current roster is really good at this except for Aramis Ramirez who from what I understand is really afraid to fly so only flies during the season. Wood has only missed 2 and those were the years his children were due the week of the convention.
To me the not miss are Meet Baseball Management and Down on the Farm as far as info goes.
Fun is Not for Women Only.
This will be the first one I miss.

Boy we really must have run into each other
If you add in the session on Team management ( ticket policy , Wrigley expansion etc) that is my plan. Never been big on autographs.
I still laugh at the look on poor Juan Pierre’s face in the Not For Women Only session. He really wanted out of there.

Not for Women
Not For Women Only has so many memories.
Kathy and Judy are a good listen on a daily basis and have more sports talk on than the Score (the 5 minutes they spend with Dave Eanet is more sports time than in the 3 hours on the Score).
And they know more Cubs stuff than they let on, They’ve had Jenny Dempster and Sarah Wood on quite a few times and Sarah Wood once cohosted.

Also
Also I wonder if Greg will be there? He came in 2005 and came in the years before he left.
I also go to Meet Cubs Business Management. That and Down on The Farm are reasons to stay over Saturday night.

If he retires...
He might come. If he is still a free agent or part of another team, I don’t think that he can come

Even if he retires
My guess is he’d start showing up in 2010? I remember someone telling me last year these guys usually wait one whole season before showing up at the fan fests or the Cubs organization waits a year…not sure which one it is.
I think you're right...
… because even though Maddux appears retired now, what if he appeared and then signed with someone a month later? That’d be strange. It would make more sense to see if he sits out 2009; if he does, then he’s probably completely retired for good.

Not sure he would ever come
He does do charity events which this is but he is not that big on public stuff if he can avoid it and frankly he does NOT
like cold weather but maybe the kids would like to see snow ?

Maddux
Let’s put it this way I don’t think there’s many women out there that are fans of him because of his looks although I don’t find him ugly. Different looking not ugly.
He looks like my high school math teacher.

I liked my HS math teacher
I thought Maddux was kind of cute in the nerd glasses days anyway. I admit I find certain players attractive ( DeRosa and Lilly on the current team) but in general I don’t like to fall prey to the idea
that female fans are just in it for nice buns. I mean that is a bonus here and there but as have said before “choosing” Maddux as my “favorite” player a long, long time ago was the ’best " decision I ever made. Worked out better and longer than jobs, relationships and the Cubs as a team. I fear I may end up like Miss Havisham when he does retire and just end up locked in dusty old room with a bunch of clippings and videos of is playing days.

Don't be silly
I think 70 would be more than enough. Let’s not go too far. FYI it is NOT or even mostly ex Cub fans. Lots of Brave fans and just baseball fans who would love him to play at least one more year.

Market
I think if he retires as a player teams will be lined up around the block to hire him as a coach/front office person even on a PT basis.
I want his brain in the Cubs organization somehow somewhere whether it’s working with Hendry in the front office, coaching on a per assignment basis with some young pitchers or on the bench here.

Dawson came the year after he retired.

suggestion
Go to the seminars that have the players you want to get an autograph from. Many times after the seminar is over, they will sign a limited amount of autographs. Thats how I got my Ernie Banks Jersey autographed (the only autograph I ever got in all the years I have attended the convention). I went up to the table where Ernie, Billy Williams, Harry Carey, and Jack Brickhouse hosted a seminar and after the seminar (it was in Jan on 98, the last convention both Carey & Brickhouse attended before their death) and Ernie decided to sign some items and I git lucky and he signed my jersey.

Plan ahead
On Friday you’ll get a schedule when people are signing.
Heads up, you will be disappointed. You’ll see that two or even three people you wanted an autograph or photo with will be doing things at the same time. Try to get in line 90 minutes in advance and realize who’s before and after him. The easiest lines are when you have for example: Zambrano, DeRosa, Wood signing at the same place. Usually people will be waiting for one guy instead of the other and you can get who you want to sign.
Also take advantage on Sunday. Usually a few of the regulars and all the prospects will be signing. Last year Soto, Marshall, Fontenot, Ward, Murton, and Fuld (remember him) all signed along with a few legends and I think Shark.
I would think this year guys like Marshall, Fontenot, Johnson, Cotts and Gaudin to be there on Sunday this year (although I could be completely wrong).
And if you were worried you might miss a seminar you can get audio archives of a bunch of them on WGN Radio. Cubstoseries is right about the “Not just for women”. There’s nothing like hearing DeRosa and Theriot talk about how they shower together (sarcasm) but it is a funny seminar no joke.
Do you have tickets?
The tickets are sold out for the convention, and the Hilton is sold out. If you don’t have tickets now, ur only bet is Ebay.
Heroes get remembered but legends never die
Cheapest prices are stubhub
as I can see or Craig’s list. Going rate seems to be $110 or so which considering if you did buy them they came to about

Maybe I like Cochran
I’ve listened to a zillion of his podcasts and as soon as they are over I can’t remember his name for the love of God. That’s a good trait in an interviewer, that he doesn’t become the center of attention instead of the interviewee. I don’t know how that translates into this “morning show” thing that I never hear. I only get WGN online here and currently just download automatically the Lou podcasts.
