Another thought on the Gregg deal
Not sure if this was mentioned in the Trade thread (it was too long to read, and if this has already been discussed, please disregard my post) but my theory is that Gregg will be part of the Peavy deal. Last night ESPN said that the Cubs are pursuing a third team to complete the trade with the Padres. With Hoffman gone, and no real obvious choice for the new Padres closer, Gregg fits this bill. Not that we would ever give up Marmol, but if thats what it took to get Peavy, it is not completely out of the question, therefore, Gregg is our new setup man...that is purely speculation and nothing I would ever hope for.
In an ESPN the magazine interview a couple months back, DeRo says that of all people on the Cubs, Wood would be the last to leave the Cubs. I have to agree with this, of all people in MLB, Wood would be the most likely to take the 'hometown' discount.
I ask myself why trade for a replacement for Wood when we already have one in Marmol. If Gregg is to be our setup guy, feel that we could fill that role with someone we already have...this trade just doesnt make sense to me at all, unless a trade with the Padres imminent.
God I hope I'm right

Possibly...
The Padres are closer-less at this point and time so it’s definately something to ponder.

just thought
i had a little too much to say in the trade thread, i saw it was mentioned but not explored…dont comment too much on this site except for the preseason and thought this was worth a read…sorry for not conforming to the bleedcubbieblue standard of expectation.
also, does everyone really have 45 minutes to read through 283 posts on one thread (yes, i am a slow reader)…i’m as big of cubs fan as anyone but if i have something to say that is not just a funny headline and random thought, this is my best audience, you dudes need to lighten up

Talk about arrogant!
It’s a different angle on the trade. What’s the problem? Lose the attitude DCF.

its not a different angle
its the exact same angle that was stated in the previous thread, the poster just didn’t take the time to read it and admitted as such

Who knows.
Time will tell.
I kinda doubt it, but I hope I am wrong. Gregg just doesn’t light my world on fire.
Also, if he does play for us next season, do you think he might become another Latroy Hawkins? I just have a feeling that Cub fans will be giving this guy a hard time, especially, if he ever blows a game. The media has already portrayed him as the guy who replaces Kerry Wood.
That just won’t work… period.

I have to agree...
as much as I hate this trade/letting Kerry go, I think he is set up to fail given the circumstances…unless people look at Marmol as the new Kerry and Gregg as the new Howry, then he will probably be god.

Marmol
…will be the next closer. But still, I just can’t help but think when people see Gregg in a Cubs uniform, they’ll be thinking… “we gave up Kerry Wood for this guy?”
I know that isn’t exactly the truth, but thanks to the media, a lot of people will be thinking that way.
So, if Gregg does pitch for us next season, he’s going to have to do something to really turn on Cub fans or he may end up on Al’s list of Can of Worms.

agreed
another example is when the Cubs traded Maddux for Izturis. Anything short of All star play and that guy was gonna hear about it, because he was the guy we got for maddux.
Im not going to analyze the trade too much for awhile. I want to see if this is just a stepping stone or if this is it.
Im personally more sad to see wood leave than anything else.

Highly doubtful...
considering the Wood news.
And this was mentioned several times in the thread.

Multiple people brought this up in the other thread
It didn’t make any sense there either (Ceda has more value to the Padres than Gregg).
