Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

Watching Kerry's 20 strikeout game

on DVD.  In honor of his leaving.  Who would have thought the highlight of his career would come in his fifth major league game?  His curveball was unhittable.  Too bad his elbow ligament was coming apart at the time.  He never threw that curve again after his rookie year.

The other factor that impressed me is how much better Bob Brenly is as an announcer than Steve Stone.  Steve was obviousman, mainly reading from the press releases.  He's nowhere near as good as in the memories of some Cubs fans.

One final note:  Aramis Ramirez would have eaten up that ground ball to third that Orie couldn't handle.  If it had occurred in the 6th instead of the second inning, Kerry would have had a no hitter.

It's one of the games

in the nine dvd set “Chicago Cubs Legends, Great Games Collector’s Edition.” It appears Amazon has the set at less than $50 (I paid quite a bit more). It’s definately worth the money, although some of the later games (Derrek Lee’s five hits against the Dodgers) could have been replaced with something better.

I see it for $19.99 on amazon

that’s what I paid. If you click below the main order area there are some links that say 43 New, 16 Used, etc. In the new section there are quite a few available new for under $20. To me it was well worth it for the Sandberg vs Sutter game. Games in the set include-

-Ryne Sandberg: June 23, 1984-5 for 6, 2 HR, 7 RBI
-Rick Sutcliffe: 1984 NLCS game 1-no ER allowed, one HR hit
-Andre Dawson: Aug. 1, 1987-3 for 4, 3 HR, 5 RBI
-Mark Grace: 1989 NLCS game 2-3 for 4, 4 RBI
-Kerry Wood: May 6, 1998-20 strikeouts
-Sammy Sosa: September 13, 1998-61st and 62nd home runs
-Greg Maddux: Aug. 7, 2004-300th career win
-Derrek Lee: June 1, 2005-5 for 5, 1 HR, 4 RBI

That’s some pretty good watching.

I have the set myself.

Well worth it, and yes, you can find it for under $20 in various places, including ebay.

For me, and maybe its just me

The highlight of Kerry’s career was him single-handedly winning the Atlanta series in 2003.

Your 2008 Missouri Tigers! #12 8-2 (4-2). Next up at Iowa State . Jeremy Maclin, Jeremy Maclin, Jeremy Maclin.

It's not just you

The Cubs have won one postseason series in the last 100 years. Kerry Wood was responsible for two-thirds of that.

20K game

Arguably the most dominating performance by a pitcher in the history of baseball. 1 shitty hit, 0 walks, 20 k’s. Astros couldn’t hit him if they were using those big red wiffle bats from when I was a kid. Anybody remember those? I still get blown away just thinking about it.

Thinking about

the wiffle bats? I mean they were cool and everything but…

Remember Ned Yost wanting MLB to award C.C. a no hitter?

If that went through then I was ready to petition MLB to change Wood’s 20K game to a no hitter.

I wish...

The released some more great Cubs games.

I remember watching Kerry Wood’s 20K game live and just getting goosebumps. I think his curveball in that game was the most incredible thing I have ever seen in baseball. I’ve never seen anything move like that. There was magic in the air…

The Astro’s looked so lost. I don’t think they even wanted to go to bat. One thing about that game, is that the Astros were a GOOD team. There were some great players in that lineup…. possibly HOF’ers.

I agree on just about every aspect...

…except for Bob being a better broadcaster than Steve. I think that’s ridiculous, but to each his own, I respect that.

The game is a gem. I remember watching it when I was little with my grandpa and he couldn’t believe his eyes. I knew baseball, but didn’t understand the significance of what was happening before me until later on.

As I watch the game again, it’s so funny seeing these Astro players when they punch out. The looks on their faces were just priceless that day!

Sandy Martinez

I thought he’d be ready to get the majority of the starts behind the plate after catching Wood’s 20K game. Shows ya what I know! LOL

Didn't he...

…end up playing in like, 15 games that season? haha! Poor guy, that was a hell of a game he called. Granted, he wasn’t the one throwing the curve that day, but still, he can go down saying he caught that game, which is a great accomplishment.
