Rumor: Peavy coming to Cubs according to Towers?
Cubs and Peavy
LinkTowers on the Jake Peavy trade talks: "It's really come down to one club now – the Cubs. It's going to take awhile. They have a couple of players to pick from that we are interested in but anything with them is going to potentially involve a third team or fourth team. We're focusing only on them."
Towers said his conversations with the Yankees "were not substantial" and that he told Yankees GM Brian Cashman "until I get the go-ahead from Jake, I'm not going to" explore trade options with Cashman.

This quote has been around for a while.
It doesn’t make the Cubs “front runners”. A third or fourth team? Good luck getting that done.
I think we have to let this one go. The Cubs’ payroll is now north of $130 million, and they’re still looking for a hitter.

You are probably right, Al
Seems like Peavy really wants to play for the Cubs, though. I think that there is only a small chance of it coming to fruition, but we are Cubs fans right? Eternal optimists? :)

I Threw The Spreadsheet Together Last Night...
… and I see us at $146M, which includes:
. estimated arbitrary values for Cotts, RJ, Gaudin, Kevin Gregg, Cedeno and Wuertz.
. Blanco coming back at $2M
. Piniella’s salaray
. estimate for guys 26-40 on the roster.
Most of the chatter has been to push Marquis’ $9.875M salary, to which we will likely eat some. If we trade, we likely will be sending several of our $400-$500K guys, too, which make whatever salary we have to pay a little more palatable.

Another Way Of Looking At It...
… is moving Marquis and the players involved in a Peavy deal will likely cover Peavy’s 2009 salary. That said, if the cap is $150M, then we likely have $5M more to play if we were to get Peavy.
Hendry said in the Dempster conference that he does not have a final payroll number. He has said that it will go up “slightly” from last year’s $130M number.

But I still think that another lefty in the pen is on the radar
That is another few million. I just don’t see how Peavy and Dempster fit unless Harden is traded. I suspect Marquis will be moved in January.

It's not another few mill
if you get a guy who’s pre-arb. That’s more expensive by trade.
There’s also a Japanese lefty coming over who could be cheap.

Yes and if you look at the Crisp trade
getting a good pre-arb relief arm costs a starting center fielder. Not sure who the Cubs would move to get one.
Jeremy Affeldt signed for $4Mil a year. I was generous in saying the Cubs could get one for $2Mil.

Affeldt was the pick of the litter.
And Crisp wasn’t exactly a starting CF.

I give up
Crisp’s line was .283 / .344 / .407 with good defense. He will be 29 next season. How is that not a starting center fielder? The only reason he wasn’t a fulltime starter for Boston was they had too many OF’ers.
by rlpete on Nov 19, 2008 10:25 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
It was known that the Sox wanted to move to Ellsbury
All I’m saying is that there’s a difference between trading a starting CF and trading a guy the rest of the majors know you want to dump. I expect, for example, that Felix Pie’s trade value is higher than Crisp’s even though Pie isn’t our “starting CF.” But Pie has more upside and is cheaper.
I’m not trying to make you give up. I’m just saying that the Cubs can find an inexpensive LH reliever if they’re willing to trade enough to get one.

I don't know man...
I’m certainly not in favor of this deal. However, I wouldn’t underestimate the interest of all parties involved to get something done. Moving the Marquis salary would be tough, but there might be some appeal for all in moving Harden at this point, and replacing him with Peavy.
Personally though, I think the Padres come back to Wren with hat in hand.

There were quotes out earlier in the process that the Cubs could get both.
Right now, though, the right strategy for Jim is to play a little hard-to-get. Towers is out there saying the Cubs are the only team and that the train has left the station. Peavy may be (repeat: “may be”) falling into our laps here. You don’t want to overpay to get him.
But we can’t have Peavy w/o dumping one of our other starters, and Peavy only costs 4.5 M more than the most expensive one of those. So, this is still possible as long as Towers says its possible

There's just too much to cough up,
money and players. I get the feel Peavy is going to ask for the 2013 option to be picked up or a re-structure that would cost more than Demp would get on the free market; >$75M for 5. There’s a better way to spend that cash with having already had to send players the other way.
The need a leadoff guy much more than Peavy right now, with Demp back in the fold. I’d love to see more power from the left side of the plate too. Does the recent Crisp trade to KC open it up a little more for DeJesus? Can he play RF instead of his customary LF?
We can’t deal with another year of McPhail/Angelos in the Roberts situation even though I’d love to see him leading off and swiping 40-50 bases next season. Furcal is too much IMHO so does that mean they look to Hudson? If they go after him does that mean DeRo automatically goes to RF so they don’t lose his bat?

Might that make this artificial cap moot? Or at the very least provide some wiggle room.

We have no way of knowing this.
I suspect the Ricketts group, which is well funded, will allow the Cubs to spend. Maybe not at will, but they won’t return to the MacPhail days, either.

If its Ricketts and he has TD Ameritrade money behind hit, they would presumably have just as much spending power as we all assumed Cuban does.

There's new stuff in there.
This quote, in particular is interesting:
A Foxsports.com report on Tuesday indicated that the Cubs, in spite of a rotation featuring Dempster, Carlos Zambrano, Ted Lilly and Rich Harden, could still be interested in Peavy depending upon which group takes over ownership of the organization. The report said an ownership group would be decided upon before Thanksgiving.
But some team sources have indicated the Padres liked where discussions with the Cubs were headed, it appears a third team would have to be involved for a trade to work out.

Actually what is very new and important to me is
Peavy’s agent saying he was willing to expand his list of teams he would consider a trade to by 5 or 6 more and opening the possibility to an AL team changes the dynamic significantly and makes it far less likely that he would be dealt to the Cubs.

If you read Axelrod closely
he never says he’ll expand the list of teams that won’t get vetoed. Peavy reserves the right to veto any trade. His “list” was the top five teams Peavy’d like to go to. But even on that list, Peavy and Axelrod were clear, they might not accept a trade to some of the teams on that list. It’s crazy. There remains a distinct possibility that Peavy would only accept a trade to one or two teams.

Axelrod is not sending Towers on a wild goose chase
While he might well require more sweetners from a team he is clearly giving Towers the go ahead to negotiate
with 6 or 7 additional teams and that does change the situation a lot.

Yabbut
Towers isn’t necessarily telling us the truth, either. He’s probably told Towers where things can work and where they can’t. And it may be important for Axelrod to make sure Jake Peavy isn’t the bad guy in all this.
There’s a lot that’s odd in all this. Within 24 hours, Towers is saying, “We’re down to the Cubs” (which is inconceivable to read, especially if it’s true) and Axelrod saying, “Oh, we’ll open up to more teams.”

So let's bottom line all this.
Towers is still talking as though he accidentally sat down on a syringe full of sodium pentathol. And the Cubs could still get Peavy, but only if a third team gets involved, which, so far, it hasn’t.

No one ever quotes from the second movie
bad, really lame sequel.

It looked so bad...
…I couldn’t bring myself to watch it.
Pointless personal anecdote: The original movie was the first R-rated flick I ever saw.

Should have never been made...
Especially so long after the first one and esp. without Jim Belushi… Bad, bad idea, worse film.

Is there a doctor in the house?
KT is in serious need of surgery to remove his foot from his mouth.
The “Cubs need a third or fourth team” sounds like posturing to get the Cubs to give up someone who is off-limits (probably Harden and/or DeRo) so that KT can flip him/them for a stud pitching prospect.
Let’s see…
Wren isn’t biting.
Hendry has no need to bite since he just signed Demp.
Peavy doesn’t want to go to the AL East.
KT doesn’t want to send him to the Dodgers.
KT has seriously overplayed his hand.
Sounds like a winter full of rumors followed by a January dump job….

Dear Santa:: All I want for X-mas this year is an official 2009 Jake Peavy Cubs Jersey. Oh and a Beimel one too. I've been a real good guy for the most part!!!

Doesn’t anybody see what’s been posted already?

How sick are (certain) Padres fans?
I don’t want to waste a Fanpost or even Fanshot on this, but I just wandered over to Gas Lamp Ball and found this Fanshot, which provides a link to a recent Trib article reporting that Rick Sutcliffe has urged Jake Peavy to strongly consider joining the Cubs. In response, the commenters proceed to make light of Sutcliffe’s recent bout with colon cancer. Seriously.
