Fred McGriff to the Cubs?

There's been some intense hotstove action on BCB the past few weeks. Let's take a breather and have some fun.
Let me hear about your all time most disappointing free agent signings / trades. Those new players you were SO wanting to join the Cubs, but the move just didn't work out so well.
They can be big names or small names that you thought would make an impact.
Have at it everyone :)

I can still remember
Peter Gammons talking about this on ESPN. He was saying what a great deal it was for the Cubs and that Nomar was going to hit a ton of home runs in Wrigley…

Mark Prior
for Miguel Tejada?
I can’t remember any specifics on that trade, or if it ever had any legs…..but what a great deal that would’ve been…

i think
it was going to be prior or Zambrano. i also think they were going to throw in erik bedard to at the time. can anyone back this up?
by Glacier on Nov 19, 2008 12:06 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
IIRC...
… there was a rumored Prior-for-Tejada deal. The Orioles asked for Zambrano instead of Prior and the Cubs stopped the talks.
That’s how I remember it, anyway. Search the site — there was probably quite a bit of discussion about it at the time.

That would be my pick too
I was at his first appearance at Wrigley. He got the Marlins down to their last strike, then gave up a three-run inside-the-park homerun to an unknown rookie named Kevin Millar. I think that was the strangest play that I’ve ever seen in person…
…Millar hit a line drive into the well of the RF wall, Sosa tried to make a leaping catch but accidently kicked the ball into the corner and then had no idea where the ball had gone. Sammy put his arms up, thinking the ball had gotten caught in the ivy…while Millar was very slowly circling the bases for his first ML homer.
Aguilera was awful after coming to the Cubs that season. Even though he had a decent looking ERA, he blew five of his thirteen save chances after they acquired him.

I was excited that the Cubs got Jody Gerut for Jason Dubois.
I thought Gerut had a lot of potential. He had a great rookie year, and was in the middle of a bad year, but I hoped a change of scenery would help him break out.
And there was a nice biographical piece, I think by Fred Mitchell, that’s not accessible on-line now (as far as I can tell), so I was rooting for Gerut.
Gerut got 14 ABs in 11 games with the Cubs before we traded him to the Pirates for a guy who had tested positive for PEDs, a guy we dumped a month later.
Then Gerut had a falling out with the Pirates, and it looked like his career was over.
It was pretty disappointing all around until Gerut came back this year for the Padres.

Gerut...
Gerut is a local boy, from Willowbrook HS in the western burbs, and is also a very intelligent and personable guy. He’s an easy guy to root for and I was glad to see that he played so well for the Padres this season.
He suffered a really bad knee injury just a few games after he was traded to Pittsburgh. He missed the rest of that season and two entire seasons after that. At some point during those lost years, he and the Pirates got into a dispute over whether another knee surgery was necessary.

I'm going to jump on the Nomar bandwagon
Not only did he contribute very little to the ill-fated 2004 team, his injury in early 2005 signaled the beginning of the end for that squad.
The 2005 team isn’t talked about much, other than Lee’s breakout year. It’s kind of amazing that that squad only won 79 games, even with the injuries.

Danny Jackson.
He had been a 23-game winner only three years earlier. Yes, he was coming off an injury, but I figured at age 29 he could easily come back. Plus, I remembered well the four-hit game he had against the Cubs on September 4, 1988, all while throwing a six-hit shutout.
Jackson went 5-14 as a Cub before he was finally dumped to the Pirates for a player who was at least partly useful, Steve Buechele.

and Dave Smith
Dave Smith may have been the worst closer the Cubs have ever had. That’s saying quite a lot. Good grief! I knew the guy was past his prime when he got to Chicago, but I had no idea he was going to be absolutely horrid for the Cubs. There had to have been more to it than Wrigley Field being a worse pitcher’s ballpark than the Astrodome.

Some deals only seem bad in retrospect...
…but that seemed moronic from Day One. Certainly Garland never ended up being that good, but trading a number one pick for a middling journeyman reliever is just idiocy. …plus I wouldn’t have minded having a cheap inning-eater with a league-average ERA from 2002-2007+/-.

I was at that game.
April 6, 1993. Guzman took a perfect game into the 8th before walking Terry Pendleton. You’re right, he allowed a hit with one strike to go in the 9th.
Guzman did make four really bad starts in 1994 for the Cubs and hung around in their minor league system till 1996.

91?
I believe it was the 90-91 offseason. The Cubs signed George Bell, Danny Jackson, and closer Dave Smith. They added a slugger in Bell, to add to Dawson, Sandberg, and Grace. They got Jackson who had won over 20 games before in a season, and a decent closer in Smith. Everybody was expecting good things from the Cubs. There was an atmosphere of excitement as far as I was concerned.
Well, Bell had an OK year. But Jackson and Smith both did horrible. It didn’t go long into the season that everything fell apart. I also think that was the year Zimmer was fired. Maybe I’m wrong though….
I was very disappointed after that year.
Ah well. I remember getting very excited about the Nomar trade also. That ended up being a bust.
’84’s Sutcliffe trade has to be the best in franchise history. ’93’s A-Ram and Lofton may be 2nd all-time.
At least, I think so… off the top of my head.

+1 (or +91, I should say)
I thought they’d win the division for sure with the additions of Bell, Jackson, and Smith. But then there was that awful April series in Pittsburgh where they pissed away two leads going into the bottom of the final inning.
I know I always say this, but if it’s possible for a team to quit in April, the 1991 Cubs did. They never recovered.

You're Exactly RIght
Where those the games when Andre Dawson hit those Grand Slams? If I remember correctly, he put the Cubs in the lead and dominated, only to have the bullpen blow it. I just remember that all the air seemed sucked out of the team.
On a positive note, I also remembered just how dominating and scary Andre Dawson was when he got hot. Was that the season where he was intentionally walked like 5 times in a game? When he was hot… he was a monster!
