Google Images has released photos from Time magazine. There are some great classic photos for the Cubs, including this one of the scoreboard.

And, hey, look! The Cubs are winning!
Even better, they’re beating the Cards!

OK, I had to do this.
The obvious question is, when was that taken? The link says “October 10, 1949”, but there was no Cubs game on that date. Clearly, that refers to the date of the Life magazine in which it was published.
The only possible date from 1949 that photo could have been taken was Friday, September 30. Bob Rush wore #17 for the Cubs in the second half of 1949; he clearly started that game. There’s no Retrosheet boxscores for that year, so I checked the Tribune archive.
The boxscore for that game matches precisely the first three innings. The Cubs won the game 6-5; in doing so they helped knock the Cardinals out of the pennant race, which they lost by one game to the Dodgers.
Thought you’d all like to know.
That is a VERY cool archive of photos.

Ha ha...I was wondering whether someone would do this.
Thanks!

And also...
… given that the photo was taken on a Friday, we can see how different baseball was in those days — only ONE night game among the eight scheduled.

The other scores on the board correspond with the matchups and results of that date as well.
I’m pretty sure you’re right about this being Sept. 30.

The question I have is...
What were the holes on either side of the umpire numbers for? The only thing I could think of it was part of the Football setup and they would designate quarters, but I am not sure. Anyone know for sure?

Look at the one of the Cardinal dugout...
the enlarge the picture and look across the street at the billboard. I believe that is “Ricketts Cocktails”. Could be a sign?

Yep, that's what it says...
…and that certainly could be an omen (whether good or bad I suppose time will only tell).
And ya gotta love those old exposed dugouts — nothing there to stop a screamer to the right side. Good thing the Cards manager (?) in the No. 26 jacket is wearing two caps. (?!)

Those dugouts...
… weren’t rebuilt until 1984, when the current clubhouse was built behind the dugout.

funny seeing Washington on the scoreboard for the AL
You know, I bet less than 1% of the people in Wrigley that day are still alive. That’s what I find fascinating about pictures like these. Even though people have passed, you still get to see how they lived their typical days and how they viewed baseball
To see your idol player whom you have grown up watching be cast aside by his loyal organization can make even a grown man choke up...We'll miss you #34!

Well, let's see...
… that photo was taken 59 years ago (1949). Assuming there were a fair number of people under 25 there that day, many of those may still be living.
Attendance that day was 9,818 — not bad for a 90+ loss team. Many of those there may have been Cardinals fans, since they were in a tight pennant race (which they lost).

what I find interesting about this picture
is the fact that the scoreboard has been altered since then.
at this point (for good reason) it only has space for four games per league while the scoreboard now has space for 6 games per side
it didn’t take major changes, but they are noticeable.

Notice, though...
… that the shape of the board has not changed — they just redid it, first to add the four expansion teams in the early 60’s, then to add the four expansion teams from 1969.
Since then it has not changed to add any further expansion teams, thus there are games left off virtually every day.

yup
they changed the front of the board but handle those expansions but ran out of space.
I personally would like to see them make the scoreboard taller so that it can accommodate all games going on.

I would agree with that...
… as long as the basic shape and function of the board remained the same.
