Ted Lilly/Sean Marshall
After reading about all of the Peavy rumors the followng trade idea has come to my attneion... What if we could deal Lilly for Yunel Escobar??? WOuld you do it or not do it? I love Theodore and feel like he can contribute a lot but part of me thinks that Sean Marshall is ready to go... I might be crazy but i really like Sean... Not to mention we could shed significant salary to add other parts. I think Yunel is amazing and if the padres dont want to deal peavy we should go to the braves and try to gey escobar... We would have a rotation then of
Demps
Z
Harden
Marshall/Big Unit/Shark/Marquis/Peavy/Atkins(just added to the 40)/ Guzman/mystery man
i like two of the previous to step up.. and with the saving of lillys contract we could have a lineup of
Soriano
Escobar
Ramirez
Dunn/Bradley/Abreu
Lee/Soto
Soto/Lee
CF Platton
Derosa
and Scrappy Doo goes back to the bench where his terrible arm range and SB% belongs....
Thoughts???

Lilly has a no trade clause.
and In my opinion marshall will get pounded if he’s a regular. maybe not but thats what I think.
Dear Santa:: All I want for X-mas this year is an official 2009 Jake Peavy Cubs Jersey. Oh and a Beimel one too. I've been a real good guy for the most part!!!

I believe it is a limited no trade clause
but I would be really pissed if we traded him

Marshall needs...
A fourth pitch, or to develop his changeup into something more dominant, to be a regular starter. He has shown signs of brilliance though

LMAO!!!
You think the Braves are going to trade Yunel Escobar for Ted Lilly?
That has to be one of the dumbest things I have ever heard. You think the Braves would ever, ever, ever agree to that?

yes if they lose out on every pitcher on the FA market which is looking likely
than Lilly for Escobar makes sense…. Hell they might need to give us a little more…Lilly was just fine..

i agree
lilly has a lot of value, and escobar has been over-hyped by the Braves before he was ever in the majors. he’s a nice looking player and i’d love to have him…but he is not Cal Ripken or Ozzie Smith.

i dont know if it works straight up
but i could easily see a trade where they are the two main pieces….especially if they’re down on the guy.

Why would
Lilly approve a trade to a siberian hell like Atlanta…particularly if (as you suggest) they lose out completely on filling out the major area they are lacking in — pitching. It would be like walking into a ghost town to become sheriff.

Atlanta is not that far off.
They had a lot of bad luck last year. With the money they have to spend, I like their chances.
Plus, they’re going to get two pitchers. Lilly could be the second.
Consider that if we trade Lilly, we can probably flip 3/4 of what we get for Lilly to get Peavy and then we save .5 M in cash and possibly even keep a prospect or two received in the Lilly trade.

which limb of Escobar do we get to keep? I guess if he’s gonna play short, it might as well be his right arm…

Most pitchers love Atlanta.
I’m not saying that Lilly would necessarily approve a trade — some guys just put NTCs in their contract to make some extra money on a trade, some really want to stay in one place — but Turner Field is a pitcher’s yard, the Braves have a decent sized payroll and plenty of youngsters on the way up, and most guys love playing for Bobby Cox. (Kenny Lofton is the only exception I can think of.)
Having said that, I wouldn’t trade Lilly unless I got Peavy.

why does everyone want to trade this guy? Besides, with pitching at a premium, as it always is, I think we could actually do better than Escobar in a Lilly trade.

Drop all these losers we have for the outfield and put Barry Bonds in left field, Kenny Lofton in center and Sammy back in right. Call it the AARP outfield.

funny enough
they would probably out-produce the current OF configuration by plenty. Kenny looked real comfortable on the Celebrity Golf Tour last summer. I saw him at the Stan Humphries and thanked him for playing so well for us and asked him to get back to Wrigley. He replied, “Tell them to call,” while laughing out loud.

Lilly for Escobar makes little sense
Why would the Cubs give up one of their top starters for another right-handed hitter? He’s not a big enough upgrade over the Cubs current options at SS. If he’s so good, the why would Atlanta dangling him as trade bait?
by tom veryzer on Nov 20, 2008 10:18 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
Escobar has a great glove
which makes him a significant upgrade for us at SS. If the Cubs wanted to make a direct trade with Atlanta, though, we should ask for more than Escobar, but not as much as they were going to give for Peavy. Still, Jordan Schafer could be the lead-off man of the future if the Cubs acquired him.
In my view, the Cubs should offer Lilly to Atlanta to get the pieces necessary to get Peavy.

RH hitter all you're going to get at SS anyway, most likely.
NO way someone gives us Escobar for Lilly.

I would not trade Lilly...
It would weaken our rotation…Z and Harden were injured last year…Hopefully Dempster can pitch like an ace again but that ’s not a given…Lilly has been our most consistent pitcher the last two years and I remember him being a great stopper when we had losing streaks. His contract is one of the few good contracts that Hendry has given out (DeRosa too).
I don’t think Marshall is more than a number 5 starter.
escobar is not what the Cubs need…Sign Furcal
If the Braves couldnt get Peavy with Escobar and Schafer among others what makes you thing that the Cubs could?
Interesting idea but I think it weakens the team more

We have other pieces they might want and we don’t have Hanson holding up the talks with us. In other words, you combine the two trade packages SD likes to get something that works.

Hmmm…I guess so…complicated though
but I don’t think Lilly can net two top prospects…
Peavy is a true ace, a Cy Young, younger too
Lilly’s more of a 3rd starter with his numbers…too many homers maybe worsened by Wrigley.

But he has the added skill
of being able to run over opposing catchers in a single bound. That should be worth a lot.

Chase Utley will miss 4-6 months (part of the 2009 season)
Link here via MLBTR.
That might give the Braves some urgency in upgrading their pitching so that they can get off to a good start without relying on Smoltz or Glavine. They may renew talks with the Dads, or they may be interested in overpaying for Lilly or even Marquis. At the very least, they may step up their efforts on Lowe.

Interesting.
I didn’t even know Utley had been having hip problems. Pretty amazing that he played as well as he did throughout the regular and postseasons.
Also, check out the comments in that article. Apparently, ol’ Chaser dropped an f-bomb at the Phillies’ victory parade.

I would think that the Demspter
Signing would have more affect on their desire to pursue Peavy again than Utley being out for part of the season. In theory, Peavy’s market shrunk by one when demp signed and the Braves now appear to be the cheese that stands alone in the Peavy Soap Opera…unless Peavy approves a trade to another team not on his list.
This will probably drag on for a while as the FA pitchers get picked off and the Braves/Towers engage in a game of Peavy Chicken. Who will Cluck first…my money is that the Braves get him for what they wanted to give up.

1 year of Ted Lilly != 4 years of Jake Peavy
It’s silly to even suggest as much.
by Wreckard on Nov 20, 2008 3:12 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
First thing, it's 2 years.
Second, Lilly may well have a wider market than Peavy because his expense is lower and he may be willing to go to more places than Peavy and most importantly, because our GM is professional.

Lee was part of a firesale
Granted, not as bad as the one that followed 1997, but they unloaded a lot of talent from that 03 team awfully quick.
He got fleeced in the Pierre deal, and dont forget about the Dontrelle deal; he was ROY and a 20 game winner while w/ the Marlins, and some of the sting has been taken off of that the past few years, but you cant tell me you were cursing the heavens when Willis was all the rage from 03 to 06 when he won 58 games.

The Willis Trade was not that bad at the time…No one knew him
Cubs traded Willis (then a minor-leaguer), fellow pitchers Julián Tavárez and José Cueto, and catcher Ryan Jorgensen to the Florida Marlins, in exchange for pitchers Matt Clement and Antonio Alfonseca
Of the bunch that the Marlins got ONLY Willis panned out…he had a good 3 years.
We got 3 Good years from Matt Clement (Who was pretty much our 2-3 starter though he was on some bad teams and his W/L record wasn’t great…good ERA)
So it wasn’t a total wash like the horrible Pierre Trade.
The Ceda trade will come back to haunt us unless Gregg helps us win it all next year.
