Billy Corgan blames Eddie Vedder for 2008 Cubs Loss
I saw this at last night's Smashing Pumpkins concert and fortunately someone else had a video camera.
Billy Corgan (lead singer of the Smashing Pumpkins) pretty much up and blamed Eddie Vedder (lead singer of Pearl Jam) for the Cubs' 2008 loss when he releasedthat "All the Way" sone a few months back.
Corgan also said he's thinking about recording his own Cubs song ... which he feels he can make a better one than "Go Cubs Go"
You can watch it here ... http://homerderby.com/archives/2986
I say Billy should shut up and sing.
Mind you he did rip on White Sox fans in attendance.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, editor-in-chief (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

I always wondered if Billy would comment on that.
I wasn’t sure if him and Eddie Vedder were buddies, enemies, or what.
I think it’s stupid to “blame” Eddie Vedder for anything, but this is funny. I hope he does write a Cubs song though, the more the better!

He's a big time sports fan
atleast a Cubs fan. I forget the name of the show and it was about 15 years ago but it was with Telander, Bentley and gawd, the rest of their names escape me and they sat around a round table smoking Cigars and talking about Chicago sports but occasionally Corgan would come on the show and for the most part handle his own.
I think maybe there might be a little resentment there with Eddie getting a lot of attention with the Cubs and singing TMOTTBG and now that song. I imagine Billy’s like “Hang on, what the F@%k, I actually grew up in this town (Eddie’s from Evanston but moved as a young teenager) and am a huge Cubs fan” and like he said, “singing a song about MY team”.
Has Corgan ever sang TMOTTBG? Has he ever done anything with the Cubs? If so, I don’t recall.

The show you're thinking of is
“Sportwriters on TV,” which I used to watch. It was on SportsChannel back in the 80’s and 90’s. Joe Mooshill, Bill Gleason and Bill Jauss were some of the other writers featured.

Ridiculous to blame a song
Especially one as great as “All The Way”. Do you think Red Sox fans blamed “Sweet Caroline” up until 2004? I think Billy is just jealous that he didn’t write that song. Also just for grins here is a pic I took of Eddie last summer when I worked at Wrigley, hes a really nice guy his bodyguard on the other hand not so much

Billy’s problem is he’s TOO prolific. He seems to record and release every riff and melody that passes through his shaven head. I still find “Gish” pretty powerful and “Siamese Dream” is just about perfect, though was way overexposed.
After that, things get really dicey. I actually thought “Adore” was pretty decent, but only when listened to as a Corgan solo album. At this late date, however, I find his voice just about unbearable.

Yeah, I saw them at the Metro on that tour.
I think I’d heard only one or two songs by them at that point. I’ll never forget stumbling into the balcony, looking down on the stage and seeing Billy standing there, with his long sheets of hair and paisley shirt, hunched over his guitar, raising an unholy storm of feedback. The band had a lot more mystique back then.

Billy Corgan is a douchebag
And, in its defense, Vedder’s song isn’t about the 2008 season. It’s about the history of being a Cubs fan. Something, at least from that SI.com video feature, Corgan hasn’t truly been since he bailed after the 2003 playoff collapse.

Well, the song certainly had nothing to do with anything
But I was surprised at the timing and the popularity. It’s a wistful song that would have made more sense to catch on in a bad year or after a collapse, not on the cusp of what we all thought would be a historic run

Well, as rambling, self-indulgent on-stage rants go...
…that was fairly entertaining. Then again, I was born, raised and still dwell here in the Chicago area, so it plays well to me. I can only imagine how bored out-of-towners and non-baseball-fans must’ve been.
As I’m not a big fan of either Vedder or Corgan (or their respective bands), I’m not really going to take a side here. The more cynical part of me actually applauds Billy for sparking this feud (real or otherwise). It is the off season, after all, and it’s not like there’s that much else to do. I hope Eddie responds by scrawling “Screw you, Corgan” across his chest during a 20-minute version of “Alive” or something.

Vedder and Corgan both are Cub fans
and that’s where the comparison’s between the two end. Corgan is definitely no Eddie.
Eddie attends the Cubs fantasy camp every year and I’ve never seen Billy there. Maybe Billy can attend this year and Eddie can pitch to him. Billy better be wearing a helmet. I’d like to see that.

Into the Wild
Is a very good CD put out by Vedder, within the last year. Eddie is always collaberating and putting out music, independantly of Pearl Jam and is very respected in the music industry,by his peers and Corgan, is not. Corgan couldn’t hold a candle to Eddie when it comes to writing a song with sincere emotion. Corgan has made a living out of candy pop songs as Eddie has not.
I sense you don’t think he’s a talented songwriter or musician, which is your opinion but I imagine you’re not aware of 50% of his work.
I guess with no baseball to disagree about, we have to find something.

Not really.
Eddie sang one song and not even a whole song on that CD. You might be thinking of Chris Cornell who wrote the lyrics to every song on that legendary CD, which ofcourse was inspired and came out of the ashes of the death of his best friend and lead singer of Mother Love Bone, Andrew Wood. FWIW, Pearl Jam, minus Eddie Vedder, was originally Mother Love Bone. Then after Eddie Vedder joined the group they went by “Mookie Blaylock” before settling on Pearl Jam.

let's not get crazy
Billy Corgan, regardless of what you think of him, is an immensely talented musician as he typically wrote the lyrics and all instrumentation for every Pumpkins song. The Smashing Pumpkins are no more “candy pop” than anything Pearl Jam has released. and no sincere emotion? Listen to Adore, nearly the entire album is addressing the loss of Corgan’s mother. In addition to that Corgan has evolved his sound while Vedder finds it safer to stick to the “mindless jock rock” that made him famous (those aren’t my words, but Kurt Cobain’s). Also if you think it’s relevant, Corgan actually resides in Chicago while Vedder and his super-model girlfriend (how’s that for sincere) live in San Diego.
I’m not a fan of either, but Vedder is a blowhard tittybaby with the ideology of an abrasive 15 year old girl and released a Cubs themed song to make a quick buck. He can screw himself.

WTF does it matter that Vedder does not live in Chicago?
and Corgan does? Does it make Corgan a better musician because he stayed in Chicago and Vedder did not? Does it make Corgan a bigger Cubs fan because he stayed in Chicago and Vedder did not?
I no longer reside in Chicago, so by that logic, I guess that makes me less of a Cub fan.

Vedder
Vedder still charged people for an uncut recording of a terrible song. He is a clown.
Why didn’t he write “All The Way” in 2006 when we were all still paying to go to games in spite of dying a little bit after 96 of them.
If we’re talking relative merits, how much of the instrumentation on Ten did Vedder write himself?

I'll play
On Ten, he wrote zero of the instrumentation but speaking of “evolving” every CD thereafter, he has contributed to more and more songs, “instrumentation” wise. He released a CD called “into the Wild” last year, where he wrote and performed many different instruments, if that makes any difference to you, which I could care less because it’s obvious you’re just a douch bag looking to troll.
I love your sad and frivolous concept of what makes a better musician and that’s apparently if you play more instruments. I can play 4 different instruments, does that make me a better musician than Eddie Vedder? I don’t think so.
I also think it’s funny that you consider Corgan such a “great musician” when in fact, he’s technically, not a very good guitar player. Let’s not forget he possesses a voice that is more annoying than nails on a chalk board and Just because you make crappy music with zero substance (with a ton of effects to cover up your flawed structure)and do so while playing more instruments, doesn’t make you a better musician.
Smashing Pumpkins haven’t been the same without James Iha and despite this mythical idea that Corgan is the “musical genius” behind the Pumpkins, we wouldn’t know who Billy Corgan was, without James Iha, who was just as important to the Pumpkins success and collaberated just as much to the Pumpkins music as Corgan, but didn’t need to go telling everyone within 5 miles how great of a musician he was, to stroke his insecure shattered ego.

Please...
I like “Ten” but “Siamese Dream” blows it out of the water in every way.
As morgane mentions below, Corgan has evolved and continually attempted to make innovative records. Pearl Jam still writes good songs but their sound is largely unchanged since ’91.

Smashing Pumpkins have "evolved"
into utter crap. To say that Pearl Jam hasn’t “evolved” or still sound like they did in ‘91 is a bunch of szit. That statement there just show’s your ignorance on the band. Off the top of my head, a song that has a baseball influenced (although the song is not at all about baseball) title and I’d like you to download is"Bush Leaguer" which was recorded 6 years ago and he got a lot of heat for writing the song but how prophetic and true it has turned out.
Pearl Jam and Eddie Vedder are just as relavent and maybe more so (definitely more so on a global level), than they were in ‘91, while Billy Corgan and Smashing Pumpkins are not. Don’t get me wrong, Smashing Pumpkins are a fine band, but let’s not compare the two bands and specifically Billy and Eddie.
Just because a band “evolve’s” doesn’t necessarily mean that’s a good thing though either. Just look at Metallica!

Are you kidding me?!
Ten is a classic. Alive, Evenflow, Jeremy, Black are all incredible songs that have withstood the test of time.
Everyone’s taste in music is different and perhaps because Ten came out when I was 12 or 13 and really struck a cord with me has made me love that album, but it is widely considered an incredibly influential album to this day. So, perhaps, we have a different taste in music, which is cool, but there’s no way that Siamese Dream blows Ten out of the water.
Plus, any band that has had the distinct honor of rocking out with Neil Young instantly propels them to a higher level.

stop the blame game
don’t blame Eddie. I’m tired of people being so supersticious that it’s like, “oh I shouldn’t have spilled my drink at the game, that’s probably why the Cubs lost, oh I’ll blame the loss on a spilled drink.” You know what I mean. People are so quick to blame anything that has nothing to do with what actually happened on the ball field. And for Bartman’s case, leave the man alone, he has nothing to do with anything. Blame Moises Alou for his absolutely non-professional reaction after he missed the catch. Once he reacted that way, he provoked the team to give up a huge inning, and the whole crowd to chant “@#$hole” and throw beer at Bartman.
