Mesa Solar Sox In AFL Championship Game Saturday

The Solar Sox, who have prospects from the Cub organization (as well as the Braves, Phillies, Marlins and Tigers) will play the Phoenix Desert Dogs (A's, Diamondbacks, Twins, Blue Jays, Rockies) in the AFL title game, tomorrow at 1:30 pm CT at Scottsdale Stadium in Arizona.

Here's some more info on the game, including projected starting lineups. The link says you can watch the game live on MLB.TV; I have no idea whether you have to pay for an entire subscription to do that (MLB would be smart to offer the game as a teaser to try to get people to subscribe, but we all know MLB rarely makes smart marketing moves).

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, editor-in-chief (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

Since no one posted here, I will.

The Solar Sox lost 11-4; that makes five straight years that the Phoenix Desert Dogs have won the AFL title.

Guess who had the biggest day for the Desert Dogs? That’s right, former Cub prospect Josh Donaldson, who hit a three-run homer.

"Coincidental dynasty"

That sums it up pretty well, actually. 1,881 people in attendance too, has to be one of the biggest crowds for an AFL game. I think Donaldson will have a pretty good MLB career and the 2 times I saw him this Fall, he impressed me.

Hanson though, wow. I saw him pitch 3 times this Fall and it said that he was the most dominant pitcher in the League this year which is a no brainer, but he was the best looking pitcher I’ve seen ever in the AFL in the 5 years I’ve been going. Considering what he did this year in the AFL in what is by far and widely considered a hitters League, is phenomenal. He’s everything they say about him and much, much more.

As far as attending AFL games over the last 5 years and being a Cubs fan, it’s rather depressing seeing year after year, some good prospects come through and year after year, there are none, and I mean none (not unless you consider Sam Fuld) of them are prospects for the Cubs. I really hope that changes soon. Sure, they’ve had some highly touted prospects like Pie come through, but like Pie, I was never impressed when watching them in person as I am with other teams prospects. Again, I hope that changes very soon.

Agreed on Hanson.

I saw him last Monday in the game I went to. Absolutely dominant. It’s no wonder the Braves said no when SD asked for him in the Peavy deal.

Instead of paying multiple millions of dollars for Peavy’s contract in a trade, the Braves would probably be better off just putting Hanson in their rotation in 2009. And they just might.

Ah, Billy Beane.

He really knows how to pick ’em.
