The Top 10 Cubs Games of 2007

For those of you SportsCenter top 10 countdown fans out there and are also Cubs fans, this is right in your league.  I know we can talk about 2008 and all the great Cubs games of the year but let's see who the Cubs amateur historians are (I mean come on it's only 2007, not a far historic stretch).

In the poll, "The Top 10 Cubs Games of 2008", there were comments left about how many games were included in the poll and how it doesn't even compare to 'a couple' of great Cubs games of 2007.  Well I think there were plenty of great Cubs moments from 2007 that most Cub fans remember, and some moments that most Cub fans forget.

Just like the Cubs Games of 2008 poll, there is a list of what I think were the best 20 Cubs games of 2007, even though the title is Top 10 Games.  If your game isn't on the list, post a comment please.

Star-divide

The Best Cubs Games from 2007

April 21 - Jason Marquis, a former Cardinal (world series champion Cardinal lets not forget) shuts down the Cardinals in his first appearance against them shutting them out 6 to nothing on a fox telecast.

May 6 - After beginning the 2007 campaign 0 in 6 in one run games, the Cubs win 4 to 3 in 10 innings in walk off fashion on a Daryle Ward fly to the warning track in LF to drive in Matt Murton to complete the sweep of the Nationals.

May 18 - Cubs down 3 to 1 in the 7th to the Sox, come back and win 6 to 3 in the first crosstown game of the year.

May 19 - A see-saw affair is finalized in the 8th inning with a six run frame capped off by a Derrek Lee grand slam to stick it to the Sox.

June 1 & 2 - The turning points of the Cubs season: Carlos Zambrano and Michael Barrett exchange blows in the dugout, Lou Piniella explodes the next day both on  Cubs losses but go 63-46 the rest of the season.

June 16 - In a wild Cub-Padre affair, Big Z nearly throws a no hitter, Derrek Lee throws a punch, Lou Piniella is at the bottom of a brawl pile, and one Big Z mistake leads to a 1 to nothing loss?!  Big Z would re-deem himself 15 months later in Milwaukee.

June 24 - Cubs complete sweep of the Sox at the Cell on a shutout!

June 25 - Cubs give up 6 runs in the 9th inning to blow an 8 to 3 lead only to win on an Alfonso Soriano bloop single with the bases loaded to win the game 10 to 9.

June 29 - Aramis Ramirez hits a walk off HR vs. Brewers and Wrigley Field is up for grabs.

July 15 - Cubs down by 5 early to Astros, comeback to take a 7 to 6 lead by the 4th inning, no runs scored the rest of the game to complete a sweep.

July 19 - Cubs scatter 16 hits, Bonds hits two home runs, Cubs still win 9 to 8 in a game where the fans got their money's worth.

July 24 - Cubs squeak out a 4 to 3 win over the Cards ending with Pujols grounding out to end the game with a runner on.

August 1 - Cubs go into 1st place on a walk off wild pitch to bring home Matt Murton in a 5 to 4 win.

August 21 - Cliff Floyd drives in the game winning run just after his dad passes in San Francisco.

August 30 - Cubs squeak a 5 to 4 win over Brewers in the final matchup of 2007 en route to a Division Championship that the Brewers didn't get.

September 2 - Derrek Lee hits 2 run HR in 8th to put Cubbies ahead 6 to 5 to finish off another sweep on the Astros.

September 12 - Cubs pull off the double play of the year to end the game 3 to 2 with the tying run standing on 3rd base in a huge game in Houston with a close race in the Division.

September 17 - Mark DeRosa goes 5 for 5 capping it off with the walk-off hit to win 7 to 6 vs. the Reds.

September 21 thru 23 - Any game in this series is a Cubs route of the Pirates in the final 3 game set at Wrigley for 2007.

September 28 - Cubs clinch as Division Champs in Cincinnati!

I was watching that June 25 game...

against the Rockies and was scoring along at home. Before the top of the 9th, I went ahead and totalled up all of the Cubs stats, cause I figured that there was no chance of there being a bottom of the 9th. When Tulowitski hit that HR to give Colorado the lead, I crumpled up my scorecard in disgust and threw it in the trash.

That game taught me not to total up any scorecard until the final out happens…. no matter how big a lead either team has.

There's one more you left off.

May 9, 2007 at Wrigley Field.

Jason Marquis threw a three-hit shutout (with no walks!). Alfonso Soriano led off the bottom of the 1st with a homer — that was the first time in the history of Wrigley Field that had happened — a game led off with a homer where there were no other runs.

Until Z’s no-hitter in 2008, that was the last CG shutout thrown by a Cubs pitcher.

And...

… the April 21 game cited above wasn’t a CG — Marquis threw 7 innings, Will Ohman (!) the last two.

April 21 game

I never realized by saying a pitcher threw a shutout also meant he threw a complete game. I knew Jason Marquis went 7 innings because I was at that game sitting next to my best friend who’s a Cardinal fan for his first Cub Cardinal game. I was all smiles that day. So I’ll re-phrase the April 21 game here: Marquis shuts the Cardinals down in 7 innings in a 6 to nothing Cubs win, facing his former team for the first time.

No one voted for Sept 17?

DMH must not have seen this thread yet.

My next sig line quote will also be from Lou Piniella, and the first word will be either "Look", or "Listen", followed by a comma.

I took care of it. :-)

My leading candidate, June 3, wasn’t included.

I was at that game -- one of my all-time favorites

But voted for June 29, beacuse that seemed to be the day that the Cubs and Brewers really started changing places.

I was in the left field bleachers by Al for that game. Fantastic finish by Ramirez!

Yeah, I gotta give it up for that game.

It will go down as a legendary victory in Cubs history. Thanks, Aramis.

I don't know the date

But in Atlanta, Kerry Wood comes in with the bases loaded and I think no one out, and pitches two innings of “up yours” relief. It was the big test.

I am not ashamed to admit that I cried on that day.

"I lof to hit de home ron!"

by Tekboy on Nov 23, 2008 1:12 PM CST reply actions

Kerry Wood didn't pitch against the Braves in 2007...

… and his only two-inning outings that year were in two losses and an 8-0 win.

Are you thinking of a 2008 game?

Honorable mention

Kerry’s return against the Mets is an honorable mention to me. The roar that went up and the look on his face.

It's a boy. My new nephew William Oliver born 11/14/2008 256 am. Thank you to all who offered best wishes when I mentioned it a few times over this summer and fall.

That's not my nephew in the picture. Don't have one to upload yet.

June 3

Cubs in the middle of a 6 game losing streak. Cubs had managed to get 4 hits in the first inning without scoring a run. Two outs. DeRo hits a grand slam on a 3-2 pitch. Sean Marshall, in his season debut, pitches very well. That seemed to help turn the season around.

damn

remember all these games reminds me why i love Cubs baseball.

by Glacier on Nov 23, 2008 2:54 PM CST reply actions

that's the Cubs' key to keeping their fans

since the Cubs don’t supply their fans with the World Series ring, the Cubs supply their fans with games that you remember forever. That’s why people say they’ve been to many ballparks but say that Wrigley Field stands out as the most magical place they can go. Wrigley Field is the most magical ballpark because of those games you remember forever. How do you spell belief? Go Cubs!

it may have been a spring training game but I remember when Daryle Ward hit a walk off
grand slam against the Rangers on March 21, 2007 to win 11 to 7.

September 28 in Cincinnati

I was there in person to see the Cubs tie for the division title. I was sitting next to a guy, “Jimmy from Bridgeport”, who said he had to spend $1500 to fly to the game from New York on short notice. The Padres took the lead over the Brewers just before the Cubs-Reds game ended. I was so happy when San Diego won a little later in the evening to give the Cubs the division title.
