How about a HOF right fielder with over 600 HRs?
No one has mentioned Ken Griffey Jr. as a right field solution. I realize has numbers were weak last year, and he has alot of injury issues, but he had successful knee surgery in Oct. that explains his drop in power. He wouldn't have to play everyday. He sould be motivated, he and Lou have history, and he souldn't be to expensive. No other possible solutions have as much upside as this on in my opinion.
Other than this I would keep the roster the same as last year. This team didn't lose because they weren't more talented. They lost because they couldn't handle the pressure.
As far as Peavy goes I would offer Harden in the deal to save payroll. It may be more money than San Diego wants to add, but there is only 1 year left on Harden's contract, and someone else will end up paying that when they trade him for more prospects. Marquee's contract is gone after this year, and Lilly's is gone after next. I could live with Peavy, Zambrano, and Dempster 1,2,3, for the next 4 years.
No one is going to take Marquee's contract off our hands, and that may be ok. He hasn't been that bad, and sometimes players excel in the last year of a deal for some weird reason....

I thought you were...

If you think Worf has gone postal before… just bring Sosa back.

Do "meh"s really resound? I think not. More of a whisper or a droning of words.

Griffey has been suggested
And the idea was shot down. By a lot of people.
5 years ago, sure. Now, however . . . I’d rather have Dunn.

It can’t be because he hits better than Dunn.

Thank you Al for attempting to add some reality to the fact
that the Peavy deal is dead, if it was really ever alive al all. I’m afraid some of us here just won’t let it die. We’ll just keep beating that dead horse along with the Roberts deal until both players are settled on some other team or signs a new contract. You are correct about other priorities, a solid LH bat will be a must, but unless Henry has a good trick up his sleeve, I can forsee some journeyman patrolling RF next year providing a weak bat and medicre fielding.

Aubrey Huff.
Not a journeyman, not a great fielder, but at least a decent bat. That’d be my choice, unless Hendry can pry Jeremy Hermida from the Marlins.

I'd take Huff. He's a solid consistent bad and an above average fielder. I personally would like
to see this happen sooner than later. The longer it drags out, the more management will begin to believe that the team can survive as is. I would absolutely love to get Hermida too, but I just don’t see that happening. It makes too much sense and I think the Marlins would want to hit the jackpot on any deal involving him.

Aubrey Huff likes his Vodka and Red Bulls
Whenever I read Aubrey Huff’s name I think of this timeless classic almost a year to the day</a when he talks about Baltimore being a “Sh*thole town” and his love for hotel porn.
He definitely would be a different personality from what this team has had for the last couple years.

I would like Huff as well,
but Baltimore is probably looking for prospects that are commensurate with his 2008 performance, and in 09 he isn’t very likely to be as good as he was in 08. If it would only cost one or two mid-level guys I would be all for it, but I doubt it. Baltimore would probably be better off keeping him and getting the two draft picks when he leaved after next season.

I still say we just combine those two dead horses...
…and go after Jake “The Snake” Roberts.
I haven’t seen him in the WWE for years, so he’s probably looking for work and will play for meal money. I imagine time hasn’t been too good to him, so outfield is probably out of the question. But if we can move Lee, then we’ll put Jake there and swap out first base for that burlap sack he always carries. Everytime someone gets a hit and they approach first base, they’ll see the bag start to move and get all freaked out. Ump will call them out for running out of the baseline. Team ERA will drop by at least a run or two.

I'm sorry to do this, Al, but...
Heyman talked to Towers and Towers is still saying the Cubs are the team Peavy is most likely to land at.
Sure, it could be posturing, except that Towers says they’re waiting, so maybe Hendry has told Towers to wait for resolution on the ownership situation, then he’ll give the new owners a chance to tell him to go for it with Peavy or not.
The author of this post is not a certified scout, doctor, agent, statistician, manager, or journalist, nor was he ever a very good player, though he tried very hard to be like Ryne Sandberg and was about as scrappy as it gets (in T-ball). Here are the relevant parts of that article.
"I think there’s a chance of maybe putting together a deal with Chicago,‘’ Towers said. "At least I know he’s willing to go there.’’
But in the same breath, Towers added that he didn’t anticipate anything happen anytime soon, and explained why.
Towers mentioned two complications. One is that the Cubs’ ownership situation is unsettled (there could be a sale, though there’s a lot of doubt now whether anyone interested will want to come up with the cash in this economy). The other complication is that they will probably need a third team to do a deal with the Cubs.
Now where in that does it say Towers says the Cubs are the team that Peavy is “most likely” to land at? Instead it uses words like “maybe”, “didn’t anticipate”, “complications”, “unsettled”, and “third team”.
To me that says (and none of this is really new information, it’s just Towers repeating the same old stuff to a new person) that this deal isn’t happening. It’s not posturing, it sounds like he’s giving up.

Not a direct quote, but a citation of Towers nonetheless:
Towers disagreed with me that the best chance for a deal might still be the Braves. At the moment, he appears to be favoring the Cubs’ chances.
It does not sound, at all, like he is giving up.

Look, I respect what you're trying to do with tempering people's enthusiasm for rumors.
Too many things are taken out of context. Yes, I agree. And even when they’re not out of context, there’s posturing and messages being sent to players or teams not even mentioned in the rumors, etc., etc.
But this article reflects a direct line to Kevin Towers, the Padres General Manager, and he says
1)
The San Diego Padres GM isn’t giving up hope that he can find a new home for Peavy,
2)
I think there’s a chance of maybe putting together a deal with Chicago
and 3) He doesn’t list ANYWHERE else he’s working on trying to trade Peavy to.

But he does seem to be pushing the Cubs
(via publicizing some of the particulars) to trade someone they don’t want to trade (probably Harden, DeRo, or Soto) to a third team so that he can complete the deal with the team of Peavy’s choosing and still get his young stud SP.
KT knows that the Cubs’ fan base is salivating over the prospect of adding Peavy, and most fans don’t give a thought to how difficult it would be for the Cubs to replace someone like DeRo or Soto. Hendry knows that Peavy wouldn’t be worth the loss of DeRo or Soto, so he can just wait KT out. After all, the Cubs have one of the best rotations in the NL without Peavy.
KT is trying to get “full value” for Peavy even though he has basically no leverage. He has to placate his fan base, his owner, and Peavy. The Braves, if Wren follows Schuerholtz’s policy of not giving out NTCs, are probably out of the running.
Hopefully the new Cubs owner is taking notes and will not consider replacing Hendry with KT.

Here's my new theory.
KT is trying not to trade Peavy.
What?
Seriously – what if KT has been told to trade Peavy to save money but he doesn’t want to trade him. What if all these gaffes are on purpose and Towers is trying to build enough disgust among the fanbase, that the owner changes his mind?
It just doesn’t make sense, Towers putting out to Heyman that he doesn’t see Peavy going anywhere else than to a team that doesn’t have what he’s looking for? The narrowing down of the 5 teams happened awfully fast and now he’s down to one team whose interest appears to be very cool. What if he’s trying not to trade Peavy?

Could be.
I don’t follow the Dads closely enough to know their situation.
My suspicion is that Peavy will be traded in a Santana situation — KT, having overplayed his hand, will end up with less than what the Braves originally offered.

We don't need to get older
That is the last thing the Cubs need. Both Lou and Jim have stated that there needs to be more athleticism in the line-up. Griffey is creaky. He pummels bad pitching still, but his power is dropping. He is a much smarter hitter, and knows who he can take out. His defense is slipping also. Just too many injuries over the years.
by Nibbles on Nov 23, 2008 10:13 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
No, thank you.
The Ken Griffey, Jr. that you want to sign left the planet about 5 years ago. Over his last 3 seasons, Junior has had the bat of a middle infielder and the glove of a little leaguer:
2006: .252/.316/.486/.802 (99 OPS+)
2007: .277/.372/.496/.868 (119 OPS+)
2008: .249/.353/.424/.777 (101 OPS+)
His defensive projection for 2009 is -15 as a COF and -29 as a CF. The Cubs could better OF defense from Jason Marquis and a better bat from Carlos Zambrano.
For comparison purposes:
DeRo is projected as a 1 COF and -8 as a CF, and his OPS the last three years have been 108, 102, 118.
Luke Scott is projected as a 2 COF and -7 CF, and his OPS the last three years have been 165,119, and 109.

Edmonds signed for the league minimum,
keeps himself in better shape and was brought in for a what-the-hell type of deal. Griffey, even last season around the deadline, said the his wants to be a starter, and thats not an option for a team with any hopes of contending. Fukudome is already here and is a better option. One could argue that Hoffpauir is a better option than Griffey at this point in their respective careers.

Actual White Sox stats for Griffey...
… were .260/.347/.405 with 3 HR in 131 AB. He drew 17 walks and struck out 25 times.
Except for the walks, the Cubs could get that kind of production out of Micah Hoffpauir. And I wouldn’t put Hoffpauir anywhere near RF.

harden in a deal for Peavy does make since

TWO WORDS.
“SEARCH FUNCTION.”
The idea has been suggested as recently as last month and thoroughly discussed (and dismissed). Junior was recently named Amercian Public Diplomacy Envoy, so perhaps he’s already getting a feel for life after baseball. Then again, I seem to recall reading somewhere that he wants to play for three more years. If he gets that chance, he’d be best suited as a DH or pinch hitter. The Cubs should not seriously consider him.
