Here's How Rumors Get Started

Let me preface this by saying that I met Rob Neyer last year at BlogWorldExpo, have enjoyed all his books, and generally think he's a knowledgeable baseball writer. On his blog today, there's this almost throwaway paragraph:

According to this unsigned article, the Mets are interested in signing Trevor Hoffman or Kerry Wood as their new closer, and perhaps "acquiring a set-up man such as Colorado's just-acquired Huston Street in a trade."

The "unsigned article" he refers to is this one from the Poughkeepsie Journal. The article's primary topic is the Mets' apparent interest in Trevor Hoffman:

And according to one baseball executive, the Mets’ discussions seem to be leading them away from the top candidates and instead toward the possibility of signing San Diego’s Trevor Hoffman and acquiring a set-up man such as Colorado’s just-acquired Huston Street in a trade.

Following me so far? The only mention of Kerry Wood in that article is here, in a single sentence:

The belief is that a Hoffman or Kerry Wood can be had for a less-pricy, shorter-term deal than the price tags expected for [Francisco] Rodriguez or Brian Fuentes.

Now does that in any way say that the Mets have expressed interest in Wood or contacted him? It appears to be nothing more than speculation from the writer (who, as Neyer says, isn't even named), who needed another name to throw out there because just mentioning Hoffman isn't enough.

Now, someone might see Neyer's post -- or this one -- and send it to MLB Trade Rumors, where it would take on a life of its own. Now, we happen to know, thanks to a BCB reader, that Wood was spotted on a plane heading to NYC last week. So perhaps the Mets do have some interest, and given the state of their bullpen, if true it's not surprising.

But the Poughkeepsie Journal article has no facts, just guessing. And that seems to be the case for the source of a great number of baseball signing or trade rumors these days.

Here's another good example: this cubs.com article about the Mark Teahen rumors, being discussed at length in this FanPost. The relevant passage in that article is:

Kansas City "is focused" on Cubs left-hander Sean Marshall and infielder Mike Fontenot while discussing a possible trade for outfielder Mark Teahen, according to the Chicago Tribune.

And what was this Chicago Tribune article? (cubs.com didn't even bother to link it!) It was in the "Whispers" sidebar to Phil Rogers' column yesterday -- not even in Rogers' main column! Here's what Rogers wrote:

Kansas City is focused on Sean Marshall and Mike Fontenot in talks with the Cubs about Mark Teahen.

That's it. Nothing more. No sourcing, no quotes, nothing more than "is focused".

Personally, I think these breathless rumors should be left to simmer for a while. Most of the Cubs' best deals have been the ones that no one hears about before they happen.

But hey……what else can we do in the winter, other than look out the window, besides speculate?

Hoffman

I’d like to see him pitch one more season and call it a career. He wasn’t bad last year, but he wasn’t his old self, either. I hate to see once-great players hang on too long. If he does go to the Mets, he’ll finally be with a big market team. I believe part of the reason he hasn’t got his due is because he’s pitched the overwhelming majority of his career with the Padres.

To take nothing away from Mariano Rivera, Rivera has had the benefit of pitching with the Yankees on great teams in the biggest market in the country to get noticed. That doesn’t mean he’s not great and deserving of all the praise he’s gotten. Being with the Yankees has certainly helped Rivera.

Hoffman’s teams with the Padres have run the gamut from NL champions to cellar dwellers. He is the all-time saves leader. I’d like to see him make the Hall of Fame on the first ballot, but I don’t think that will happen. BTW, I also think Rivera should make the Hall on the first ballot.

That doesn’t seem fair, Al. Wood has been linked to the Mets more definitively in past articles at bigger outlets, for one. Second, MLB Trade Rumors would most certainly not run with something like that or pass it along irresponsibly.

by Tim Dierkes on Nov 24, 2008 3:44 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No, I know you wouldn't.

It did seem like the Poughkeepsie Journal article just dumped his name into an article that was primarily about Trevor Hoffman with nothing to back it up.

I know Wood’s been rumored to a bunch of different teams. Was just trying to point out how rumors like this can take on a life of their own with, occasionally, no basis in fact.

You run a topnotch site that’s a great one-stop for all sorts of information, for which I think all of us here are grateful.

The site

MLB trade rumors is good most of the time. Just next time make sure if someone tells you something was on WGN radio that they weren’t airing a Northwestern basketball game that night.

It’s among the best though.

I'm getting a sinking feeling

Guys

1. The Sox have some trade offers for Bobby Jenks who is their closer.

2. Kerry has a lot of friends on the Sox.

3. Kerry loves Chicago.

Please tell me I’m being silly. Please please please.

You're being ridiculous.

The Sox have NO offers for Jenks. There are some rumors floating around that Jenks is on the market, which were shot down as recently as yesterday by Kenny Williams.

Kerry’s not going to the White Sox. Book it.

The Bobby Jenks rumors should be filed along with

the Derek Lee rumors. Jenks is one of the few tradeable players the Sox have and these rumors are started by people who want to see trades happen for the sake of making a trade. Kenny knows better than to give up a good player for someone else’s garbage. Move on, nothing to see here.

Thanks

Thanks Al I just heard a mention on the Score.

I’d rather see him go there than the Cardinals though.

Cardinal fans, I can accept, because they are knowledgeable and passionate about their team.

Brewer fans… ugh. Just ugh. I cannot stomach the idea of Kerry Wood in a Milwaukee uniform.

opportunity

While Wood is without a team, there is no market for his merchandise. I just bought an autographed Kerry Wood authentic jersery on ebay for like 30-something bucks. You can’t buy an un-autographed authentic jersey for under a 100 or so, so its a steal.

Of course, Kerry isn’t going to the HOF, so it’s not a steal, but it’s a good price

Also

Also to clarify the rumor of Jenks being on the block was on the Score, nothing about Kerry. I think he’s either still a Cub or a Ranger when all is said and done.

I heard

that Oscar Zamora was coming back to the Cubs as pitching coach (an unnamed source states that Dick Selma wasn’t available).

Was it here?

by leothelip on Nov 24, 2008 8:46 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I heard

that Lou was going to retire in January unexpectedly and they were going to hire Ernie Banks as the new manager. All the coaches will change as a condition of Ernie’s contract. Here are the new coaches:
Pitching Coach-Phil Regan
Bench Coach-Ken Rudolph
Batting Coach-Joe Pepitone
1B Coach-Boots Day
3B Coach-Cleo James
Strength and Conditioning Coach-Paul Popovich
Bullpen Coach-Larry Gura

at least that’s what overheard last week when I was on the same plane as Ernie Banks and Jim Hendry who were flying down to Monterrey to talk about establishing a Cubs minor league team there. They were in first class and I was in the first row in coach and they had a few too many Gordon’s gins and were talking really loud.

When we got off the plane as we were waiting for our luggage I went over and introduced myself and asked Hendry if he was feeling lucky because he certainly knocked on Wood. He didn’t answer my question but asked me if I knew a good restaurant in Monterrey that would backload the check so he wouldn’t have to pay it until next year but that he would pay double the check then. Ernie just said, “Let’s play two”.

Tommie Agee was out.

They are looking for a bat in return. Apparently Cox doesn't like the guy.

I couldn't even speculate what we'd have to send them in return, but I think he would be a good fit given his low salary, his productive bat, his position, and his age. I don't care if he's a jerk if he makes the team win more.
