2008 SB Nation Manager Of The Year Awards

I suspect the NL manager voting would have turned out far differently had it taken place during the postseason, instead of being required to be finished before October 1. Note that both Brewer managers got some votes.

I'm not sure if the vote for Manny Acta is serious, or if it's a sympathy vote for putting up with the disastrous situation in Washington all year.

As for ROY, the point system is 5-3-1.

National League 1st 2nd 3rd Points
Lou Piniella 9 4 2 59
Charlie Manuel 2 6 5 33
Fredi Gonzalez 3 2 3 24
Joe Torre 2 2 3 19
Tony LaRussa 2 - - 10
Ned Yost - 3 1 10
Cecil Cooper - 1 2 5
Manny Acta 1 - - 5
Dale Sveum - 1 1 4
Jerry Manuel - - 1 1
American League 1st 2nd 3rd Points
Joe Maddon 16 1 - 83
Ron Gardenhire - 7 4 25
Mike Scioscia - 4 5 17
Terry Francona - 3 2 11
Ozzie Guillen 1 - 2 7
Cito Gaston - - 3 3
Trey Hillman - 1 - 3

My ballot: 1) Torre 2) Piniella 3) C. Manuel

Mike's ballot: 1) Piniella 2) C. Manuel 3) Torre

Joe Maddon should have gotten every first place vote

Lou leading the way in the NL doesn’t really shock me.

The Manny Acta vote has to be tongue in cheek

I can see giving him a 3d place vote for putting up with the Nationals’ owners but a first place vote is just a waste of a vote. I also can’t see Ozzie getting a first place vote.

Tommie Agee was out.

I don't have the original ballots...

… that work was done for me by R. J. Anderson of DRaysBay.

How did Sveum get votes??

He manages a handful of games and he’s considered by some to be manager of the year? That’s insane!

by kanderber on Nov 4, 2008 1:38 PM CST reply actions

Well, he didn't get a first place vote.

That said, I wouldn’t have done that, either.

Regular Season Wise

I would definitely agree with Lou Piniella as NL Manager of the Year. I just wish he and his players had shown up for postseason.

It seems to me that most fans are not well equipped to vote for manager of the year.

I follow baseball quite a bit and yet know very little about the managing strategies of most of the guys outside the NL Central. What do people know beyond, “Hey, his team got more wins than people expected.”

Do, I’m curious, Al, if you’re willing – what led you to vote as you voted?

The author of this post is not a certified scout, doctor, agent, statistician, manager, or journalist, nor was he ever a very good player, though he tried very hard to be like Ryne Sandberg and was about as scrappy as it gets (in T-ball). Any opinion expressed above should in no way be confused with fact, truth, or reality and is hereby qualified in the following ways: 1) The author does not know as much about baseball as Lou Piniella. 2) The author does not know as much about baseball as Jim Hendry. 3) The author does not know as much about baseball as either Dusty or Darren Baker.

I thought...

… Joe Torre did a masterful job getting a banged-up, not-so-great team to the playoffs.

Definitely not a LaRussa fan,

but honesty compels me to say, goshdarnit, his team got more wins than I expected.

Hey Lou, we're long overdue.

I know I should pay more attention to baseball but

who the hell is Jerry Manuel? The first time I read this post I didn’t notice Charlie’s name behind Lou and I just interpreted Jerry as Charlie and thought that’s really screwed up that he only got one 3d place vote and then I realized it was someone else who I have never heard of. There are too many teams now to keep track of all the players and managers.

Never mind

I totally forgot about the Mets’ midsummer drama and the transcontinental firing. That seems like years ago.
