Maddux is Done
I just heard the news on St. Louis radio. I looked it up on the 'net and it appears to be true. Scott Boras, Maddux's agent, has came out and said that Maddux is probably going to retire. There is no official word from Maddux himself yet, but it's probably true.
Here is a link:

Personally, I wish he'd keep on playing. Even if he was a player-coach. He's still better than a lot of other pitchers in baseball. Still, I wish him the best. Without doubt, he's the best pitcher of my lifetime, and the best pitcher baseball has seen in many, many, years.

#31 Should Be Retired
by both the Braves and Cubs. A Braves logo will be on Maddux’s plaque in Cooperstown. #31 should have been retired a long time ago for Jenkins. #31 should be retired for both Fergie and Greg with the Cubs.

355 Wins
No pitcher is going to get to that mark ever again. I’m pretty certain he did not use any performance enhancing drugs.

It's time...
…for him to call it quits, because I would hate to see him linger and get hit around the yard.
When he left the Cubs in 06, I think he was about done then, but Petco and Dodger stadium allowed him to hold on a tad longer.
Maddux is not only the best pitcher of my lifetime, but he is probably the smartest baseball player I have ever seen.

he’d have to be in the top 10 all time at worst.

Since Warren Spahn
Maddux has the most career victories of any MLB pitcher. Maddux wasn’t born until April 14, 1966, and Spahn’s last game was October 1, 1965.

Don't be so sure

True
And this makes it more likely than not he would retire BUT the NY POST headline that he is “almost certain” to retire is in typical
NY Post fashion totally bogus and made up. What Boras said was “He hasn’t made a final decision, but for now it is doubtful he will play (any longer),” Boras said at the GM Meetings. “As it stands now, he is not going to play.” Not exactly “almost certain”.
I am surprised he said anything at all as Maddux detests speculation and I figure if he is retiring he will send out a little note “gone golfing for the rest of the decade” say day after Christmas or whenever it will get the least attention.

Trust me if it were "almost certain"
It would be done. Boras has more than a few qualifiers there. Like I said I am shocked he said ANYTHING at all as this
is not how Maddux usually does this. He may well stretch out a decision but he avoids speculating more than generic stuff and
does not like when others do it. If he is really retiring I would expect him to issue something very soon.
In the meantime I am trying to think of ways to influence the family. Does Kathy really want him around the house watching and screaming at baseball games when he is not on the golf course ? Does his son really want him to show up at all his
little league games ? I would hope they would consider letting Greg come out and play just one more season.

The old guy still has it
Sent from a fellow Maddux obsessed friend. This from TODAY’S live ESPN chat with Josh Hamilton
Mike (Connecticut): Josh, who is the toughest pitcher you’ve faced in your career?
SportsNation Josh Hamilton: (1:54 PM ET ) I hate to admit it, but Greg Maddux. Throws 85, and it looks like it’s coming right down the middle, and you swing, and your bat explodes. You say to yourself, how could that have happened. you’ll look at video, and when the ball is halfway there, and you’ve started your swing, the ball moves about two feet.

This was his last game as a Cub...
…I remember it pretty well. Standing-O as he walked off the mound, he also hit safely on a hit-and-run I believe in the 6th. I wish I had a better pic, the one from the front shows him walking off the mound and his face is wrinkled up in a twisted cocktail of disappointment and honor.

If there were any pitchers with more smarts and instincts about how to play and pitch the game the way it should be, I don’t know of them ..

Maddux probably understands more about pitching than
anyone on earth. He never had great stuff, be he understands what pitch to throw in any situation. The will probably never be anyone who got more out of less and at the top of his game, there was none better. He just knows how to get batters out. He understands that hitting is about timing and good pitching upsets timing.

Oh trust me he had great stuff
He is extremely smart but he is also a great physical pitcher, just because he topped out in low 90s in his prime does not mean he
did not have great stuff. Guy had back to back seasons of an ERA under 1.65 and you do not do that on smarts alone.

I beg to differ. As a young pitcher for the Cubs, Maddux had
a good live arm, but struggled with control. He never had great dominating no-hit stuff. That’s not a knock on him. To the contrary, it’s a compliment. Amazingly he pitched to contact. He will always be considered on of the great control pitchers of all times. Here’s a crazy stat for you. In the 10 year period from 1992 to 2001 Maddux averaged 18 wins per season while walking an average of 37 batters per season. During that same period he, averaged 7 complete games per season and his WH/IP averaged 1.01. This has to go down as one of the most dominating 10-year pitching periods in modern baseball history.

Um exactly what are we differing on ?
You think someone can be the most dominating pitcher of the modern era without having “great stuff”. Just because he did not
throw 100 miles and hour does not mean his “stuff " was not great. He may never have had an official no hitter but he sure did not give up a lot of hits. The movement on his "stuff’ was INSANE and that is every bit as "great” as throwing stuff at 100mph.

by Doggie Stalker on Nov 5, 2008 12:11 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I don't think we are differing on anything. My point was that Maddux epitomized the
term “pitcher”. He has never been a thrower. Early on he was able to use command and movement unlike any other pitcher I have seen. He perfected throwing inside to LH batters and making the pitch start off the plate and move over the inside corner. During the 10-year period I mentioned, he dominated LH batters like no other RH pitcher in the game. My only point was that a pitcher doesn’t have to have over-powering stuff to overpower batters. Maddux proved that pitching was indeed a cerebral affair and his brain would more often win out over batter’s braun.

I am afraid not
THAT I would have remembered. He said a lot of nice things about the Cubs and especially Cub fans , I think he was asked then
or later about coming back in some capacity and he gave a polite but nothing specific Maddux like response. I am pretty sure if he does become say a special assistant , roving instructor or whatever it would be for a West Coast team.

My First MLB
This is the boxscore of the first MLB game I ever got to go too. I was nearly 12, and I thought it was sooooo cool. Greg Maddux was the Cubs starter. I heard a rare event happened at this game. Ozzie Smith hit a homer (yeah, that’s pretty rare too) batting left-handed. A guy I was with told me that the only other time he did that was in the ’85 World Series. It was the shot everyone remembers… still, I remember this homer more because it was the first home run I ever saw at a MLB game. Also, Maddux got the win….

If he doesn't want to coach
If he is not interested in being a full time coach I want his brain somehow involved in the Cubs organization. Maybe as a PT consultant? Maybe even as an assignment pitching coach (being called in to work with prospects or such which I believe is how Davis started with the org.)
He might do like Dunston and Dawson. Keeping their feet in the game but not FT until the kids are all out of high school.

Maddux was to pitching.....
is what Tony Gwynn was to hitting. They were the best “students of the game” that I’ve ever seen. They spent countless more hours than the average player honing their craft. Gwynn would tirelessly watch video of his hitting and pick Ted Williams brain every chance he could. Maddux would watch the oppositions batting practice daily to determine where their weakness was.
I was at the game in August of 2004 when Maddux was honored for reaching 300 wins. As usual, he was very humble with his accomplishment. Maddux always put the team ahead of any personal accolades.
