2008 SB Nation MVP Awards

I don't think there are any big surprises here; I suspect our balloting will come pretty close to matching the BBWAA awards

.

In order for the tables to fit better, you'll have to click "Continue reading this post" to find them. For MVP's, we voted for the top 10 instead of the top 3, and points were allocated as follows: 14 points for first place, then 9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 for 2nd through 9th.

My ballot: 1) Pujols 2) Wright 3) Beltran 4) Howard 5) A. Ramirez 6) Berkman 7) H. Ramirez 8) Braun 9) Delgado 10) Soto

Mike's ballot: 1) Howard 2) Pujols 3) Wright 4) Berkman 5) Delgado 6) Braun 7) Utley 8) H. Ramirez 9) A. Ramirez 10) Soto

Howard's Strange Vote Total

He got the second most first place votes in the NL but finished tied for sixth. That’s strange.

Because he hardly got any other votes at all.

Why Is That?

By my count, there were 17 voters total. 9 out of the 17 didn’t have Howard in the top 10. What were those 9 thinking? 3 of the 8 that did vote for him gave him a first place nod. I’m glad that you, at least, gave him a fourth place vote and didn’t forget him altogether. For the record, I would have given him a second place vote. We agree that Pujols should be the MVP.

I put Howard fourth.

I thought that was about right.

Howard shouldnt be any higher than 4th

He didnt show up until the 2nd half and still ended up striking out 200 times and batting what .230 or so? I think an MVP needs to be there for his team throughout the whole season.

For the record...

I was the Ryan Howard 7th place vote.

And the Brad Lidge 4th place vote.

Howard may have been the fifth most “valuable” player on his own team.

One wonders...

…if, should Albert Pujols win the NL MVP award, he will stand by his comments from a couple years back and reject it on the basis that his team did not make the postseason.

I suspect he may go ahead and accept it "for the good of the franchise".

Maybe he'll accept it and give it away to charity.

I would LOVE to have a press pass for that press conference

I would make sure he was asked about it.

So how long have you been working in PR?

Sold his surf board to the voter?

Pujols doesn't win it

They should take all the writers outside and beat them severely with a baseball bat.

There is no other choice. The only reason the Cardinals were relevant in September is Pujols.

Friendly disagree

I really think you and Mike did Hanley a disservice, Al. I surely do not think Braun or Delgado should AT ALL be higher than Hanley, and and Wright/Beltran argument are almost a wash in the stats department. I might throw up some comparison stats here tonight. Hanley plays a harder position and is just about the only leader on that Marlins team.

Or manybe it’s my man-crush on Han-Ram.

I admit...

… that I may have put Aramis a bit higher than he deserved. I do think Soto deserved a 10th place vote.

You can put up all the statistical comparisons you want, but the vote isn’t for “Statistical Best Player Of The Year”. It’s for “Most Valuable Player” — and in my opinion, that allows for subjective criteria as well as statistics.

And this is why I think Hanley was much more valuable to his team than Delgado, Wright, Braun, or Beltran. The Mets have so many weapons they didn’t really plan on seeing the level of production they actually got out of Carlos, for instance. Braun I could see a case for, but Hanley was damn near the only player on the Marlins that was scary.

I can see your argument about Delgado...

… but without Wright or Beltran, the Mets are pretty much the Nationals.

Albert Pujols is hands down winner in 2008

McGrath: I got a good deal on those boys. The scouts said they showed a lot of promise.
Reggie Dunlop: They brought their f***in' TOYS with 'em!
McGrath: Well, I'd rather have em playin with their toys than playin with themselves.
Reggie Dunlop: They're too dumb to play with themselves. Boy, every piece of garbage that comes into the market and you gotta buy it!
