Premature Congratulations to Geovany Soto!
Barring a travesty, tomorrow Geovany Soto will be named the NL Rookie Of The Year, the first Cub to win the award since Kerry Wood in 1998. Joey Votto had a solid year, and it seems that most everybody is in agreement that he will finish second. Could this possibly be a unanimous vote? Nevertheless, Geo has made this Cubs fan very proud. Here's hoping Geo will follow in Kerry's footsteps and be with us for at least the next 10 years. Way to go Geo, you deserved it!!

Indeed
Is this the same person that was asking in September where the Cubs would put the 2008 WS Champion banner?

It's possible that Jair Jurrjens might finish second.

Don't Wear Out Geo
I don’t think he’s a flash in the pan like Rick Wilkins was. He appears to be the most solid catcher the Cubs have had since Jody Davis. Soto could very well end up having a better career than Jody did.
I hope the Cubs from now on don’t have Soto catching more than 135 games in a season. Maybe, Soto could “kind of, sort of,” learn another position like 1B or 3B, so his bat could still be in the lineup occasionally, when he’s not catching. I don’t want Geo to get worn down like Jody was back in the 1980’s.

What they'll need, eventually...
… is a solid backup whoi can catch 40 games a year. Henry Blanco should return next year as Geo’s backup and mentor, but perhaps after that the Cubs could either develop or acquire a younger backup.

As It Turned Out...
Geo “only” caught 136 games this season. I’m sure he would have caught more had it not been for his late season injury and the Cubs clinching early. Even if Geo is completely healthy for a whole season and the Cubs are still playing meaningful games during the last weekend of the regular season, Geo should never go over 135 games caught in the regular season again. To echo the sentiment, after Hank White goes, the Cubs need that younger backup catcher.

Why post this?
did you just need to be the first to congratulate Soto on his possible ROY honors? I don’t get it.

Why criticize?
Obviously, Soto will be a topic of discussion today. He just wanted to start early. I don’t have a problem with this.

Soto hasn't won anything yet.
It’s the same thing as those people (ahem…KOW…ahem) that would ask questions like, “when the Cubs win the world series this year, what will you do?” I’m sure that IF Soto wins the award, there will be plenty of discussion and congratulations. As I said above, I just don’t see the point.

Point was made just as I said so.
It’s very different than asking “what will you do when the Cubs win the WS”. I’m sure you can see the difference.
In any case, now it’s official.
Can’t find the voting anywhere, though.

ESPN's writers unanimously picked Geo...
So he’s gotta be a sure thing right? Anyone?

I just saw that
Here’s the link…

I find it a little disturbing to see all those little Geos looking back at me on the screen, but its nice to see him get the recognition he deserves.

Am I the only one who still...
can’t find the voting results? I saw that Longoria was unanimous, but the same article said Geo was almost as unanimous (or something to that nature). I’m assuming one or two voters went against the grain on this one. I don’t know how though.

Interesting.
BBWAA writers, as did some of the SBN voters, thought Volquez was a rookie. He didn’t qualify, having thrown too many innings for the Rangers. I’m surprised the BBWAA let those votes stand.
Whoever voted Votto #1, as that link says, didn’t take his vote seriously.

Seriously.
How can they let those Volquez votes stand? I’m still trying to understand how that’s possible. If someone voted for Ryan Howard for NL ROY would they let that vote stand as well?
