Baseball video games
Are you the type of person, like me, that will play a game of MLB 2k7 in the dead of winter? Or maybe are you old school and fire up the Nintendo to play RBI baseball 3, the version that featured all the division winners from 1983 - 1990.
What is the best baseball video game you ever played? My fuzzy memories recall a game Triple Play 97 with Tony Gwynn on the cover. For some reason, I remember playing this on my Sega...but I can't find anyone else who played it, unless they played it on their PS 1. Anyway, this game was impressive (for its time) Multiple camera angles, fielders diving for the ball, climb the wall to snag homers, and even running into each other. If you just back and ponder a strategy, the players will kick dirt around or slap their gloves.
But there was one very cool feature. When you broke a record, such as homeruns in a single season, the game would flash that record along the bottom, like it was running across an electric scoreboard. There was some production, recognizing the record-holder and the milestone that you reached! Kind of a cool thing I wish games nowadays would include.

MVP 2005 for XBox
Hasn’t been a good one since. All the controls are perfect. The 2006 College World Series is just as good. It has the best hit stick out of all the games. I think the lst 2K games have been crap. The Show 08 is not bad with the career mode. I played that a lot this past year.
Best old school is Baseball Stars. Easy game, but building up your team was the fun part.

I agree 2005 is the best. However I’m stuck on an old PS2 and heard that the new PS3s can’t play PS2 games. (?)

It's pretty interesting...
there are some mods to the game on websites I’ve come across with roster updates and things like that for the MVP games.
It definitely was the best baseball game.
Why did they stop making it????

They lost the rights...
MLB sold the rights to sega or whoever makes the 2k games. Which is surprising because “the show” must pay out the butt or something to use the names and such. EA couldn’t afford it. Agreed with everyone else though. And no joke, I am playing it now and still have been since 05. Guess who was the starting left fielder? Todd Hollandsworth. Ewww. Remember the “lemons”?

Man, you brought back memories
For Nintendo, RBI Baseball 2 and Baseball Stars were the best. For Sega, I loved World Series Baseball and Tony LaRussa Baseball, which was EA Sports before the Triple Play and MVP games came out. Playstation, TP 97 was great. PS2, MVP 04 was the best. And recently, the Show franchise is the best out. Sorry, but it smokes 2k.
I’d have to say, for me, the best Baseball game ever is a tie between MVP 04 and Tony LaRussa Baseball.

MLB 08 The Show and soon to be 09 come march, and yes I still play it in the dead of winter (though no longer with the cubs until next year). You mention that you wish games nowadays included things like record holders and milestones? Well my friend you are behind the times! Just get yourself a ps3 and fire up this game and you’ll be so blown away you’ll never play another baseball game again.
Granted the classics are always great. Heck, I still have the original “Baseball” for NES! Remember when you could curve the pitch when it was in midair?

It's the 1968 Version
If the photo was taken from 1967, it was Chuck Hiller. However, since the Phillies pretty much wore the same uniforms from 1950 to 1969, it might be a little harder to narrow down.

Looking at the uniforms from 1967
Only the Giants had that stripe along the bottom of the sleeve. Looking at their roster from 1967, they had four players that played catcher: Tom Haller, Dick Dietz, Bob Barton and Jack Hiatt. Haller played in 120 games and Dietz 34 so it was probably one of those two.

OK, here's more.
Hiller played in only one game for the Phillies vs. the Giants — in San Francisco. That’s a Philly home uniform, so it can’t be Hiller.
Before Hiller was acquired, it was worn by Phil Linz. Linz did play for the Phillies against the Giants in Philly — but had only three at-bats in those games.
Here’s a baseball card of Linz when he was a Phillie. I think it’s him.

Awesome
While we’re on board games, when I was a kid, I loved the original version of Classic Baseball. It came with baseball cards that had trivia questions on the back (the Bo Jackson where he’s holding a bat while wearing shoulder pads was a hot item for a few years). The questions were like “who led the NL in doubles in 1986?”
If I remember correctly, Dale Murphy was the answer to like 25% of the questions.
There were a few updated versions that came out in following seasons. Good stuff.

Best for PS3?
Although we did not have home video games in my youth, we did have arcade games in my teen/college years and so I did not hesitate to grab a controller and play along my my kids’ PS1 and PS2 games: High Heat, All-Star Baseball, and some old 1997-era game that had guys like Kevin Tapani and Jeff Blauser on the Cubs roster.
What do you guys recommend for PS3?

Baseball Simulator 1.000
Anyone else play this game for the original Nintendo? I absolutely loved it! It was a little different from RBI Baseball, in that the players just had first names, and they teams were fictional (not to mention the stadiums). I still have an old school Nintendo… I might have to pop this game in for a bit this evening!

AGREE!!
Good old SNES! E. Crash (Sammy) was a monster. The only thing that stunk about this game is that you would get about 120 games into a full season and the game would erase your season on its own. I downloaded an SNES emulator on my computer and still play Griffey every once in a while.

Baseball Stars was the best...
…in whole variety of ways, from the gameplay to the creative options. I couldn’t figure out why Bases Loaded and RBI were so much more popular at the time. Those two, and all the others for the NES, were grossly inferior to Baseball Stars but I guess that they had better marketing. Maybe kids just didn’t enjoy some of those fictional teams like the Ninja Black Sox or the pink-clad Lovely Ladies.

Baseball Stars, original Nintendo
My favorite game of all time was baseball stars, this was a game well before its time. No actual MLB teams, made up teams were used. However, the first create a player game, first game to keep and track stats, when you won a game, you won money to upgrade your team etc…..the game was sweet. I played this for hours, it probably actually derailed my own baseball career. LOL!! Modern era game, the last baseball game put out by EA, was it MVP or Triple play. Whichever, it was a great game.

OHH!!!
Those games were the best, I forgot about those. Same with NFL Blitz and NHL Hitz. Those games were so dumb but so much fun. I threw a no hitter once in that game. I jokingly hit the first batter (I was playing against my friend, we were super competitive), then struck out the next 8 batters. Crazy fun

Slightly off topic. Anyone ever play the football game where you had a board, cards and a vhs tape? I think I spent most of the time fast forwarding through the plays until i got what I wanted, too bad real life isn’t like that.

Tie between:
Super Bases Loaded (SNES)/Ken Griffey Jr. (N64)/MLB: The Show (PS3/PSP).
I guess that’s just a progression from old to new, it’s hard to compare games across newer/older consoles.
Ron Santo should sing TMOTTBG everyday. Period.

MVP 05!!!
for gamecubs is THE best baseball ever created hands down. it was pure and not too complicated like the new 2K games which are trash. i went apeshit the day i found out they would not continue the MVP line. anyone know why they stopped?

Does anyone remember
Roger Clemens’ MVP baseball for SNES? The only thing I remember about that game was that you could steal a base every time you tried. This was due to the fact that when the ball got to the bag, there would be a zoom in shot of the fielder and a sliding runner. The fielder would put his glove down to make the tag in either the inside, middle or outside of the bag. However, you could control the sliding runner and move his hand or leg over to avoid the tag and the glove never moved. It was actually easier to steal bags with slow guys since you had more time to react. Decent concept, poor execution.

What about free online baseball games?
Anyone know of any good ones? Here are a few (of highly questionable quality) I’ve come across over the years:
- This one was authored by Nabisco to promote its munchies.
- This one is featured on a site called candystand.com, which I believe promotes Life Savers and such. Registration (free) is apparently required because the game wouldn’t load for me before I registered. Doing so may be worth it, however, as the game appears to have been significantly upgraded since I tried it last.
- Here’s one offered by online game emporium miniclip.com. I haven’t tried this one before, but it actually looks kinda cool.
Yes, yes ... winter is indeed a pond upon which all of us must skate, braving frostbite and runny noses in the hopes that our cars will start and we shan't embarass ourselves slipping on a patch of black ice. Spring is more a quagmire of cold mud and slush, and fall is a pile of fallen leaves that may or may not hide a pile of doggy doo-doo. But summer, ah summer is an oasis of endless green that disappears all too quickly beneath our feet as we rush through its warm, glorious bliss.

All Star Baseball 99-05, anyone?
Those games were outstanding. Have each one except ’99 (thinking about buying it off eBay). ASB 05 may very well be my personal favorite, although I will admit MVP 05 was the best one ever made, hands down.
Someone mentioned MLB Featuring Ken Griffey Jr. on N64. I STILL have that game, and still play it regularly. Wish it had a create-a-player option but nevertheless, it’s still a great game, one of my all-time favorites.
I still like the 2K series, but perhaps that’s because it’s my only option these days (no PS3 = no Show). Still, not bad, I spent a lot of days with my Cubs team in the spring and early summer on that game.

Griffey for 64...
Far and away the greatest baseball game ever. I’m pretty sure I’ve played them all too. RBIs 1-3 were great for NES, so was Baseball Stars and though it’s not actually baseball, Dusty Diamond’s Softball Challenge was awesome!!! MLBPA Baseball for SNES had it’s moments, Griffey for SNES was cool, Triple Play for Ps2 were awesome, as was the MVP series for Ps2. I do like The Show a lot as well, but seriously, nothing has the funny factor and replay value of Griffey for 64…the follow up, “Slugfest”, was a total disappointment. My buddies and I played Griffey 64 all the time in college, and I just graduated 2 years ago, so it’s not like it was a new release by any means. My favorite moment was when we were playing a WS, we randomly chose teams, he got the Braves and I got the Red Sox. I was winning the series 3-0 and he was so pissed off he vowed retirement and to never play the game again. A week later a came back from class he had the system on and waiting for me. He rallied back to force a game 7, seriously everyone in the dorm was in our room watching this. It was epic. He was winning, bottom of the 9th, bases loaded, 2 outs and probably my best hitter Reggie Jefferson was up but only had 1 hit in the series (another great thing about this game…it kept their offensive statistics during the WS)…so I decided to pinch hit…I brought in probably the worst player in the game, said he was due. MIKE BENJAMIN!! He actually had 0 HRs in 1997, but the first pitch I saw from Mark Wholers was the superfast ball (yea, really unrealistic, but awesome, 106mph). I guessed right and lined it up perfect and it was a no doubter. About 600 some odd feet and I went nuts. He also went nuts claiming that was exactly the reason he retired. I still razz him about that game today…awesome, awesome game. He and I are probably the best ever at that game and if there were a world tournament we’d finish 1 and 2…with me being the all-time greatest! Maybe not, but seriously…greatest baseball game ever…even if you could rob homeruns by teleporting through the wall, it is still awesome!!!

I could beat ya.
Ever win a game 63-0? I have :D
Just razzin’ you, my friend. I’ve been playing the game regularly for a good ten years now, never loses its cool. They gotta have a tournament with that game, because much like you, I feel as if I could dominate just about everyone else.

another funny thing about Griffey64...
How the announcer said some two of the names…every other player seemed to be announced with a regular mono-tone voice, but these two always cracked me up…(obviously Griffey was announce with a little more zest that the others too…)
